DM of the Rings CXXIX:
Insert Lawyer Joke Here
Most advertisements are stupid. I’ve mentioned this before. But once in a while an ad comes along that exceeds the others in banality, vapidity, and idiocy. It achieves some sort of transcendent state where it becomes the sort of stupid that only a genius could come up with. Which makes you wonder how the thing came to exist in the first place. Case in point:

Legal advice. For single “girls”. The mind reels. I predict this will annoy twice as many women as it will attract. The idea that women can’t be expected to seek legal advice unless it’s fabulous! is about as insulting as suggesting a man couldn’t comprehend an algebraic formula unless it was written on some chick’s boobs.
Perhaps this is the first in a series of articles on esoteric subjects which have been demarcated by meaningless personal distinctions:
- HTML for Redheads.
- Paleontological tips for Canadians.
- The newlywed guide to Astronavigation.
- Gravitational Theory for Italian-Americans.
- Metallurgical Engineering for Diabetics.
Oh, and I’m just commenting on the ad. I have no idea if the column or the expert herself are interesting or not. I’m just saying: That ad is crazy.

Crass Merchandising
My wife has discovered Zazzle, a site along the lines of CafePress. You upload your stuff, and they put it onto a t-shirt or mug or whatnot for sale. Zazzle offers more options and a bigger cut of the proceeds. (Not that I’ve sold anything yet, I’m just going by what I see in the fine print.) She’s been filling her Zazzle account with her photographs and watercolor paintings. (I love this one.) Merchandising aside, she seems to enjoy the process of making this stuff for its own sake. Having exhausted her supply of material to merchandise, she’s decided to set up a DMotR store.

Control
A wild game filled with wild ideas that features fun puzzles and mind-blowing environments. It has a great atmosphere, and one REALLY annoying flaw with its gameplay.
Dead Island
A stream-of-gameplay review of Dead Island. This game is a cavalcade of bugs and bad design choices.
Batman v. Superman Wasn't All Bad
It's not a good movie, but it was made with good intentions and if you look closely you can find a few interesting ideas.
Gamers Aren’t Toxic
This is a horrible narrative that undermines the hobby through crass stereotypes. The hobby is vast, gamers come from all walks of life, and you shouldn't judge ANY group by its worst members.

MMO Population Problems
Computers keep getting more powerful. So why do the population caps for massively multiplayer games stay about the same?
D&D Campaign
WAY back in 2005, I wrote about a D&D campaign I was running. The campaign is still there, in the bottom-most strata of the archives.
Mass Effect Retrospective
A novel-sized analysis of the Mass Effect series that explains where it all went wrong. Spoiler: It was long before the ending.
