“Astade”

Change of pace:

My wife sometimes does research work for an antiques appraiser. When I saw how the business worked I was sort of surprised. I thought appraisers just, you know, knew everything about old stuff and how much it’s worth. It turns out that this is not the case, and often the job is more than half detective work.

My wife is stuck on one now. It’s a toughie. The client has a painting they believe to have been produced by “Astade, the teacher of Rembrandt.” The first problem is that history records no such person. More importantly, I don’t think that’s what the signature says. Take a look:

DMotR Deleted Scenes 2:
Original Lothlorien Strip

By Shamus Posted Wednesday Sep 12, 2007

My original plan for DMotR was to just run a few strips. I had a small story arc planned, which was going to end in Amon Hen somewhere around strip 25 or so. I actually had all 25 done by the time I had strip 14 up. At this point I realized I wanted to keep making them, but my story was “finished”. So, I started inserting strips into the original arc. I eventually doubled the number of strips they spent in Moria. After that I added several strips in Lothlorien, which they skipped in my original arc. Finally I scrapped my original ending for the series and decided to tackle all three movies.

Below is the strip where they skipped Lothlorien. You might notice that I actually cut this joke up and recycled bits of it elsewhere. I had a blurb to go with this comic about how players always skip the most detailed stuff you’ve prepared and head for the blank areas of the map. I held onto that blurb for another 80 strips – about half a year – before I managed to work it in at the end of strip 100.

I’m going to summarize the plot of Fable. Especially intuitive readers might be able to discern my feelings towards the story along the way.

Note: Total spoilers!

Chainmail Bikini: The Tome of Stuff You Should Know

By Shamus Posted Tuesday Sep 11, 2007

The second installment of Chainmail Bikini is up. There were a few hiccups where the prev / next buttons didn’t work, and the RSS feed was deviously hidden, but it should be all fixed now. We’ll be posting comics Monday and Friday. We really wanted MWF, but alas art is somewhat harder to come by when you don’t have New Line Cinema and Peter Jackson working for you.

Also, Shawn comments on the launch and the future plans for the strip. He also addresses the main criticism about the strip, which is that it’s been done. This is true, although it hasn’t been done by us. The internet is a big place. I’m sure we’ll manage to squeeze in someplace.

And finally, I guess I should point out that there is indeed a gamer chick in the strip. I’d intended this to be a surprise, but some people reacted with such indignation to the all-male cast that I thought I should let everyone know before the rioting starts.

DMotR Deleted Scenes 1:
Original Comic #1

As I worked on the comic, I got better at using the software, better at finding good screencaps, and better at laying things out with clarity and comedic timing. After a while I began to cringe when I looked back at my earlier attempts. Eventually I went back and re-cut some of those early comics and started replacing them.

This was a very unpopular move. Most people charged me with “pulling a Lucas”, which I realized was true. Someone (Roxysteve, I think) pointed out how you can see the comic improve over time, and that inserting sexy new ones in with the early strips ruined this effect. I relented, and stopped messing with the early strips, although I did leave the new version of strip #1 in place.

Below is the original version of the first strip. Normally I reduce comics to 600 pixels wide so that it works with the site layout, but I’ve left this one its original size.

My Mom is a huge fan of musicals, and this is one of her favorites. I think I’ll get her the remastered edition when it comes out.
