DM of the Rings Remastered CXLII: Rank Bribery

You can get away with anything, story-wise, as long as you give the players enough rewards. These rewards become hostages which compel the players to stay. Sure, you can leave the campaign now, but then you’ll never get to use this +50 vorpal sword of awesome that glows like a lightsaber and once a day can be used to create 2d8 pieces of delicious candy.

To clear up this continual confusion: This is NOT the last strip. The comic ends on Friday. You’ll know it’s the end. It’ll say so.

It seems there is a joke regarding Gimli and Legolas but I don’t get it. Can anyone help me out?

    1. I’m pretty sure it’s just a set-up for the next strip. Shamus ended this strip the same way, then started the next strip talking about what happened to Legolas and Gimli. Their friendship is a big secondary story in the books, but the epilogue also gets into some lore Peter Jackson didn’t have a good way to explore in the movies. So it’s not as significant there. It’s kind-of like Gandalf, before he returns to Valinar, says he’s going to go have a LONG TALK with Tom Bombadil, who isn’t included in the movies at all.

  2. Doug says:

And I’m still sat here going “what happens to Legolas and me?”

    1. PPX14 says:

Oh good I didn’t have to be the one to say it. Because I certainly thought it!

      1. ehlijen says:

        “Aye, me can do that.”

The last panel’s grammar may not be correct, but it sounds more stilted-medieval. Gimli’s player might be from the early Bioware fantasy RPG era, and do things like that deliberately?

Then again, his is an out of character question, so maybe not.

        1. PPX14 says:

“What happens to Legolas and my good self, my good man?”

  3. Philadelphus says:

I do like Aragorn’s player’s unbridled delight, not at being king or wedding Arwen, but at Gandalf leaving.

I forgot how quickly this comic wraps up; I only read it after it was finished, so I didn’t have the experience of it coming out, but this remake has been part of my routine for…some time (however long it’s been running now) and it’ll be weird not having a new strip each week.

I took the liberty of looking back in the archives, the first remaster post was on January 1, 2023.
So nearly exactly 3 years. Give or take however many strips there are left.

What a wild, fun ride it’s been.

    2. Mr. Wolf says:

Unlike the film, where there’s always more endings than you remember.
