Below is the original ending of DMotR, which fell somewhere around #23 in the original story.
Kinda silly, really.

so glad you kept going and didn’t end it there.
Well, *I* like it.
(Oh, and as of the second I loaded this, FIRST POST!!!!!!!11!11!!!1!one!!11!!!!eleven!! But I’m sure someone else will get there before me.)
Of course, I like what you did instead much more… one just wonders why the campaign DIDN’T end like this. If I had been a player in that game, it probably would have.
Always wished you’d brought back the hobbits into the game as PCs, their Players claiming that the other guy’s game had fallen apart or gotten lame (Phantom Menace?) and so they take back their old PCs just about the same time the halflings reappear in the movie storyline.
Oh well …
I’d have liked to see the Mechwarrior campaign.
Mechs vs. Ents to keep the quitters playing. That would have been a sight.
[channeling Graham Chapman]
Right stop that. It’s silly.
How many campaigns have been halted by cases of mass leprosy? Won’t you give generously now to the Cure Gamer Leprosy fund? For pennies a day, you can help geeks, dorks, nerds and dweebs get the treatment they so desperately need.
Agreed, Rezdave. Some great split group jokes (and lots of frame caps) never happened.
Yeeeeeeeeeees! Finally we see the “Mech Warrior” sub-plot in some of its glory.
Y’know, it occurs to me (belatedly as always, thank you Mr Brain) that the original book had, at one time three ongoing plots: The story of Gimli, Legolas and Strider giving chase, the story of Merry and Pippin escaping the orcs and their adventures in Fangorn, and (of course) the interminable back-and-forthing in front of Mordor that that whiner Frodo and the inexplicably tolerant Sam did.
(My take: in the Dead Marshes, Frodo says for the eleventy-billionth time “Oh the ring is sooooo heavy, if only I were free of it, Sam”. Sam says “Righto Mr Frodo” and hits him hard across the back of the head with his best and heaviest skillet. Frodo topples, ring and all, into the marsh and dies. Sam then has a good meal and sets off back to Hobbiton and the charms of Rosie, secure in the knowledge of a job well done. I digress)
If Shamus had been on the ball instead of obsessing over the punchlines all the time he could’ve done a nice parody of this, cutting from the DM of the Rings to Merry and Pippin’s Mech Warrior game in progress and then to Sam and Frodo Getting it on in the Star Wars milieu, then back to the DMotR again.
This only goes to show what happens when you only do the bare minimum in order to get the job done. The youth of today has no pride in doing a good job for its own sake, and nowhere is this more evident than in the almost-funny, never-clever strip DMotR.
:o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o) :o)
[Shamus] I reality, I’m glad you didn’t end it here. If you had we would never have had the pleasure of “Keen Ranger Senses”, “Hoom hoom welcome to Isengard” and the Walking Stick sketch.
That would’ve been a great shame.
How long do you plan to keep the strip up and available for viewing? There are still three people I know who haven’t read it yet.
Yes, any Dm dream a group of veteran pg as Aragorn son of Anduril, Legolas trucekiller and gilmi codebender…
And the hobbit forgot incredibly annoying, uber npc!!
You know, just last night my wife told me that there are about 4,500 people in the entire world with leprosy right now. Not sure why she told me that, come to think of it. But it’s amazing that so many of them were in one gaming group together!
Thank goodness we got so much more story, fun, and laughs instead of ending here.
roxysteve: The strip should last as long as the blog. Which is to say, far beyond my planning horizon.
Ehhhhh. Good reasons to quit a campaign… but I’m glad you didn’t. =) Although both the Mech warriors and the Star Wars would’ve been amusing too. Still waiting for that StaWa…
Actually, that is hilarious.
DM: “Hey, Dave ! You playing this weekend?”
Frodo: “Um, no. Sorry Can’t, I’m, uh, sick! *Cough*”
DM: “Man, that’s tough! Maybe you’ll be better by gametime?”
Frodo: “No, no, I’m REEEAL sick! Leprosy!”
DM:”Damn , that’s what Frank said! What are the odds?”
I thought sam would be the only one to show up. Frod would die with gollum in the pit of fire and sam would get the girl.
Hey, it’s a D&D campaign, so you can end it around strip 23 and still restart it when everybody shows up. The Gods are a fickle bunch.
Something that must be read by all….
Found via a variety of different peoples and sites…
This applies to any online gamer, any tabletop gamer, and, really, to anybody posting in any journal or web log anywhere that exists in the known (or unknown) multiverse…

Need I remind anyone that one of the most elementary methods of preventing the spread of Hansen’s disease, aka leprosy, is good hygiene? Gamers, as a group, are in a statistically endangered group, as far as this dread ailment is concerned.

Nay, good feline. I am a medical professional & gamer. Gamers traditionally are particularly prone to leprosy. Why do you think dice are referred to as “knucklebones”?
Actually, the joke’s on the DM big time – they didn’t say they had leprosy. They said they would all be LARPing.
I really loved the hobbits! I understand why it made more sense to go with Aragorn et. al, but having the halfling players perpetually bitching about their crappy stats was mightily amusing!

Doesn’t it kinda hurt to have your tongue that firmly in cheek?
