Autoblography Part 29: The Headache

By Shamus Posted Tuesday Oct 18, 2011

This is a really bad headache. The pain was unbelievable in CAD class at the start of the day, and it’s only gotten worse since then. Sometimes I try to tough it out and endure the day when I get these things, but this one is overwhelming. The school is too loud and too bright. I have to get out of here.

This means going to the nurse’s office. I do the math: She will make me lay around for twenty minutes to see if my migraine will magically go away for no reason. She will also take my temperature for no reason, because that’s what she always does. After that she’ll cave and call somebody to come get me. This might take some time, depending on how many of my relatives she needs to call. They probably won’t dash out of the house the moment they hang up the phone. It will probably take them forty-five minutes to get here. Then half an hour to get home. That part of the process will be rough. I’ll be in a moving car in stop-and-go traffic, with the sun beating me in the face. That will bring me to one of those moments where I wish I could just throw up instead of enduring the nausea. Once I get home, it will take me a couple of minutes to down some ineffectual painkillers, get an ice pack, and tumble into my bed with the lights off and the ice on my face.

So, if I go to the nurse right now, it will be two more hours of noise and pain before I can escape the unwanted sensory input and simply enjoy the headache at the baseline level of agony. Dark, quiet, ice on face, excruciating pain. That’s the goal.

Josh Plays Shogun 2 Part 5: The Sky is Always Darkest…

On a journey, ill;
my dream goes wandering
over withered fields.

– Basho, Japanese Poet

It would be a lie to say that our current situation looks anything other than bleak. Our expeditionary force into Mikawa has scarcely had time to celebrate its victory over the Tokugawa, and now faces an Imagawa army of nearly two thousand men.

shogun5-2thumb.jpg

The earlier attack damaged the gates and walls of the castle, and there has been no time to repair them.

Still, our general, Takyama Muneyori, hasn’t let the poor odds dampen his spirits. And there may still be hope â€" a small force of reinforcements from Owari is on its way and will arrive behind the besieging forces. If they can distract the archers while the forces in the castle keep the Imagawa infantry at bay, victory may not be as impossible a goal as it seems.

Spoiler Warning, The Book, and Autoblography

By Shamus Posted Monday Oct 17, 2011

People have been asking questions as of late. Rather than try to answer the same four questions spread throughout eight different comment threads in six different posts, I’ve gathered them all up here where they may be answered in bulk.

1. When is the Autoblography series going to end?

I’m writing the final entries now. It looks like it will end around part #34, which will be sometime next week. No, I’m not going to do my entire life in the same detail that I covered (say) my senior year of high school.

2. What’s the deal with the book you’re writing?

I actually did an interview with a podcast about a month ago, and I’ve been waiting for that to go live. In that interview I talk about the book in some detail, and I’d like for that interview to be news to listeners when it appears.

This book is an interesting challenge. I’ve got over a hundred thousand words all lined up, taking the reader well into the third act. That’s a lot of work, and now I’m suffering from a bit of self-doubt. I began the book as slightly comedic and lighthearted, but it turned a little more serious in the telling. That’s fine, but now the ending feels a little… eh. I don’t know. I feel like it needs more oomph to go with the slightly more serious tone.

I really want to make a living as a writer. That’s the dream: Produce work that I can be proud of, and earn enough to pay the bills. I can hammer out my planned ending, release the book as-is, and see how it earns. Or I can continue to polish it, and make something that I’ll like better. The longer I wait, the closer we get to the point where I have to bail and take a desk job. But the longer I wait, the better the final product will be, and so the more successful it might be.

So, I’m deciding when I’d like to roll the dice. I’m toying with the idea of putting up the first chapter and getting some feedback. That will help me as I finish things up, but it also might annoy people to read a chapter of a book that won’t be out for a few months.

Keep in mind that we’re all in this together. If I blow it, or if the book doesn’t pan out, then my taking a day job will greatly reduce the time I can put into this blog.

3. What happened to Spoiler Warning last week?

Several things. Josh was sick. Then I was sick. (Really, I was barely on this site for the last five days. The only reason the place didn’t go dark is because I’d written the AutoBio posts ahead of time.) So Josh wasn’t able to edit the episodes and I wasn’t around to make an announcement.

Also, the cast has been talking about how this season is going, and there’s been some concern that this season is falling apart a bit soon. We always get sick of a game before it ends. BioShock is our most notorious example. But here we’re hitting that “last five episodes of BioShock” point about halfway through the game. The occasional episode of trolling, puns, griefing, and nitpickery is fine, but I don’t think we should attempt a half a season of it. As I said before, Assassin’s Creed II was a compromise for us. None of was was particularly delighted with the game, but it was the one title we all hated the least.

So now we’re halfway though Assassin’s Creed II and we realized we needed to either abandon the season or put more work into it, because we can’t keep going the way we’ve been going for twenty more episodes. I’m reviving my long-abandoned play-through so I’ll be able to analyze the plot and do my thing.

4. What happened to Josh Plays Shogun 2?

Again, he was sick last week. If all goes well, he should have the next entry later today.

5. Hey! Where is your review on X?

I still have things I want to say about Deus Ex: Human Revolution, preferably before I forget them. I’m playing through Frayed Knights, which I’ve been waiting for since, uh… a long time ago. Now I’m also playing through Assassin’s Creed II.

So.. I don’t know. Maybe once I finish the autoblography I can dig my way out of these reviews.

Experienced Points: Diablo III Has Single Player Online

I have played the Diablo III beta. Here is what I think about the “always online” thing.

Aside from that, the beta is darn fun. They knew exactly when to end it. I had my game analyzer hat on for most of the playtime, but after an hour or so I forgot about it and began playing in earnest. Right as it was getting really good, it ended. Ouch.

Autoblography Part 28: VICA State

By Shamus Posted Thursday Oct 13, 2011

The other ten kids in this room are from all over the state of Pennsylvania, each of us representing a Vo-Tech school. We’ve met in the middle of the state, in this small shabby classroom, to find out which one is the better programmer.

This is the morning of me leaving for VICA state. I was lugging around a suitcase AND a gym bag? For a three-day trip? What was I carrying in there?
This is the morning of me leaving for VICA state. I was lugging around a suitcase AND a gym bag? For a three-day trip? What was I carrying in there?

It’s been a long road to get here. I’ve been captivated by computers since before I understood what they were. I’ve wanted to program them since the day I discovered such a thing was even possible. While the adults in my life have been cramming worksheets and busywork down my throat, I have been driven to pursue this body of knowledge. It’s been my focus and my passion for nearly my entire life. I bought my own machines. I taught myself the languages. I learned about the hardware on my own. This isn’t just a chance to win some medals or scholarships. This is a chance to validate everything I’ve been working towards. Not for everyone else, but for myself. I want to see how well I’ve educated myself.

This is a three-day event. The first day was spent travelling, and ended with some sort of general assembly to welcome us to the event and let us know how lucky we are to be here. Today we will compete. Tonight we will have another assembly where they will no doubt impress upon us something obvious and profound. “You Are The Future!” is a safe bet. Then there will be a dance. Tomorrow we will have another assembly, the winners will be announced, and then each of us will go home to our glory or shame.

I try not to think about the ride home. I need to keep my mind on this competition, which is off to a very strange start.

Autoblography Part 27: VICA Regionals

By Shamus Posted Wednesday Oct 12, 2011

Through Vo-Tech, I have become a member of the Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, which goes by the ugly and somewhat awkward name “VICA”. (In the late 1990’s, it will be renamed SkillsUSA.)

VICA holds a yearly competition for students of various vocations, where accolades and scholarships can be won by those who distinguish themselves by doing whatever it is they’re being trained to do. It works like this: Many high schools feed students into a single Vo-Tech building. Then many Vo-Tech chapters compete against each other for the district title. The winners of that contest go on to compete at the state level, and the winners at state will go on to compete nationally.

Each individual Vo-Tech instructor can select one of their students according to their own discretion. I imagine in most cases the teacher might have a test of some sort to find the best student, but I seem to be the runaway contender in all of Miss Shack’s classes. I suppose if another student expressed an interest in competing she would pit us against each other, but no such challenger appears. Having “won” at the local level by default, I will be representing our school at the district level.

I don’t want to repeat the folly of Seven Springs. I want to win this, if I can. This isn’t some generic “computer knowledge” test. This is the real thing. This is a test of programming skill and ability. This is a chance to validate everything I’ve been working for since I was a child. I’ve poured myself into this work, and I’m eager (and a little frightened) to see how all of that effort will pay off in real-world terms. It’s one thing to be the best in your class of twenty people. It’s quite another to be better than hundreds or thousands of other students. Certainly there are other Shamus-like kids out there? If there are, I’ll be facing them.

Having said that, I’m not sure how to prepare or train for this test. I already spend a lot of my leisure time programming. I’ve already explored the extremities of BASIC far beyond anything that might be taught in a classroom, on multiple machines, for over half a decade. There isn’t that much left for me to do or learn.

Autoblography Part 26: Seven Springs

By Shamus Posted Tuesday Oct 11, 2011

Way back on Nov 21, 2006, I posted a massive 8,000 word story covering the time I joined FBLA and competed at the state level in Computer Science. When I went back to re-tell the story of my entire high school career, I felt like this bit needed to be included in the chronology. But how to do it? Should I re-post the material? That would duplicate things and I’d end up with two different posts with the same content. The programmer in me does not like that solution. Should I shift the dates on the old entries to have them appear here in 2011, where they will fit into the continuity of the Autoblography? Do I take them down first? Should I change the titles so that they fit in the series? Hm.

In the end, I’ve decided to leave them as they were posted, and put links to them here.

Seven Springs, Part One: Naked Girls and A Hotel-Sized Prank

Seven Springs, Part Two: The Terrors of Room 102, and Lessons Learned

Now, for the comments: Those two posts already have long-dormant discussion threads, and I don’t want people responding to five-year-old comments, or double-posting in multiple places. So, if you want to leave a general comment about both entries, this post (the one you’re reading now) is the place to do it, particularly if you want other readers to see and respond to it. You’re free to leave comments on those old posts if you like, but I’ll probably be the only person to read them.
