Code Monkey Beta: Part 2

While the visual code being translated to script won’t solve any social issues, it does have its uses.

The exchange provides a very important bridge between the colorful stimulus loving meat brain and the needed rigidity to instruct the box to do what you need. With the neat side effect of looking a lot more interesting to play with than the code itself, while taking some of the harshness out of trying to stare down a big wall of code. Which, while undeniably one of the best ways to do it, definitely doesn’t give it many points in ‘looking interesting and fun to do’

Wednesday Action Log 1-10-24

This week I played a little bit of Lethal Company. I went into the game with little knowledge about anything. It reminds me a lot of SCP – Containment Breach such as trying to survive many monsters all with their own ways to survive them -but with scavenging scrap trying to meet quota on top of that-. The gameplay loop simple but is elevated by being multiplayer. I think the game is quite good and I’m excited play more and die in new and interesting ways.

What are you guys playing?

Movies, Star Wars, and Hardware Adjustments for New Years

Mostly going to be talking about a wide variety of B- and C-Horror movies today, but I also learned a few things while playing Star Wars: The Old Republic. “C-Horror” movies, by the way, are horror movies produced by a Roger Corman-affiliated production, which usually means a New World or New Horizons production. One of the movies I watched most of was so bad even New Horizons doesn’t list it as one of theirs…officially the movie doesn’t seem to exist. I’m talking about movies so much lately because I’ve been sick since Christmas Day. Maybe it was Covid, but probably not…I think it was just a really bad cold. I’m still coughing regularly, and blowing my nose every five minutes. This makes doing “real work” rather difficult, so my days have been comprised of sitting at my computer grinding armor upgrades in SWTOR while watching ASMR or, for reasons, finally going through a backlog of dozens of movies and thinning out my collection. Mostly in horror.

DM of the Rings Remaster LIII: Waste Not, Want Not

Don’t get too hung up on horses. While the rulebooks have all sorts of rules for movement speeds while on foot, encumbered, or riding, the truth is that all travel takes exactly as long as the DM wants it to. This brings to mind the wise old saying:

“A player is never late, Dave. Nor is he early. He arrives precisly when the plot dictates he should.”

Or something like that.

Code Monkey Beta: Part 1

This week Bay has once again found themself laid up. This time it’s with a fun combination of strep, two ear infections that the good doctor referred to as ‘acute’, which is a fun way to say ‘very bad’. and a fun flare-up as a result of not being able to keep anything down for a few days, including the modern miracle of arthritis medication. Currently I’m on the lookout for any more of the universe’s wayward attempts to off them this week; such as spontaneous combustion, or a piano falling through the ceiling. But in the meantime I figured i’d fill the content gap with a project i’ve wanted to talk about for a while now.

I’ve always kind-of wanted to learn to code.

I say kind-of because my interest had always been something of a nervous fascination. A bit like learning a second language. It was a hypothetical years-long commitment that requires me to be bad at something in an embarrassingly public way before I got to the impressive point where I could confidently say ‘I know how to speak another language’ and not fumble the bag as soon as someone asked me something more complex than how to ask where the bathroom is. And ultimately, it was more of an ends to a means of what I really wanted to do.

I’ve always really wanted to make games.

Wednesday Action Log 1-3-24

This week I’m still playing Tears of the Kingdom. I finally got around to finishing the last temple and getting all of the sages…I don’t like any of the powers they have.

They are all niche uses and when I do want to use them it’s tied to an NPC. I hate having an NPC follow me so I never have them summoned. So, when I need them, I have to open the menu to spawn them, use the power, and open the menu again to despawn them. Fun.

Other than that I got all of the shrines and I’m currently working on getting all of the caves.

SWTOR: Rix’larril’an of the Ascendancy – New Years 2023-2024

I guess I got lucky this year landing two straight posts on holidays. But it works out. I keep trying to make more of the one-chapter saga of Imperial Captain Sarnova than there really is, so I’m not ready to tackle Rix’larril’an’s next installment. But I did spend the past week trying to understand some SWTOR mechanics, and there’s a few other things to talk about.
