Dénouement 2015 Part 1: The Losers

So another year unwinds, inching us inexorably towards the darkness and the end of our mortal existence. As that absolute silence creeps ever closer we can reflect on the fact that this year gave us some nice videogames to distract us from that final mystery. Which is nice.

Last year I proclaimed the year of “Meh”. Afterward I second-guessed myself. Was it that bad? Maybe I was having a bad year? Maybe I was tired of the tried-and-true mechanics? Maybe I was just really, really sore about how the Thief reboot turned out?

But no. If anything, last year looks even more pathetic compared to the lineup of 2015. I couldn’t even remember my GOTY from 2014. Looking back, I see that it was Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel. To show just how different 2014 and 2015 are: If Pre-Sequel had come out this year, it wouldn’t be in the running for GOTY and it might not even make my end-of-year list at all. I mean, I liked it at the time. But I don’t think I’ve given the game a second thought since writing that post.

Every year I look for a theme that ties it all together, but this year we kind of have two. In the indie space, this seemed to be the year of games about programming and development. We got TIS-100, Human Resource Machine, The Magic Circle, Infinifactory, and Else Heart.Break(). You could argue that the command-line and script-driven Hacknet also belongs on the list. Maybe Beginner’s Guide could be part of the list as well, since it’s a game about game development? Sort of?

It’s all very meta. We have games about designing games, games about coding games, games about coding in general, and games about logic and flow control. It’s experimental and educational in places. Speaking from a purely selfish standpoint, I wouldn’t mind if this was the start of a trend and indies gave us more games about coding and less games about retro-styled 2D side-scrolling platforming.

But in the AAA space I think we had a different theme going. For big-budget games, 2015 was the year of bugs, glitches, and bad ports. So I suppose it was also about coding, but in a different way. To put it in perspective: Bethesda released a game this year, and it didn’t even make the list of top 3 buggiest games. What are you doing, Games Industry? Look at you! Pull yourself together!

Doubtless next year will be better, bug-wise. We’re still in the shake-out period for the new console generation, and that’s always hard on game engines.

Before we talk about my favorites, let’s jeer at the losers…

Diecast #132: 2015 Retrospective

Hosts: Josh and Campster. Episode edited by Rachel.

I couldn’t make it to our recording session this week, since I was hosting our family Christmas party at the time. Mumbles couldn’t make it, since she was at Disneyland. Rutskarn was busy with [age joke].

But Josh and Chris kept the dream alive. Here they looked back at 2015.

Also: My 2015 dénouement will run later this week.

Hangout Steamtroller: Mirror’s Edge

Here’s our livestream of Josh playing Mirror’s Edge with the Steam Controller. Like Total War, I gotta say this works way better than I expected.

Josh has always wanted to do a Mirror’s Edge season of Spoiler Warning, and I’ve always vetoed it. Covering the game would mean playing it, and that’s just not happening. Forget it. It’s like the thing was designed to frustrate and disappoint me.

But this stream shows off a nice chunk of the game, and… yeah. It looks like a really middling and uninspired game wrapped in a deceptively captivating aesthetic.

The Altered Scrolls, Part 14: The Last Era

Why would I write a series about how the Elder Scrolls games change drastically with each iteration, then doubt it will happen again?

Why would I quote Todd Howard, god-daddy and showrunner of the franchise, as saying that each game is a total reinvention–and then guess that it would soon be otherwise?

Why do I think Bethesda’s open-world model is beginning to settle?

It all comes back to one consideration I hadn’t even reckoned on bringing up when I began this series. It’s an inaccurate buzzword trio coined in spite that accidentally almost came true seven years later, and discussing it is going to mean identifying what the underlying spirit–if any–of these games really is.

Oblivion With Guns.”

Mass Effect Retrospective 26: THIS HURTS YOU

So we’re on Horizon and we’ve met Joe Colonist, the nameless dolt who is our stand-in for the human colonies. We still have two other characters to “meet”. First up…

ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL

Well you know what they say happens when you 'assume'. You make an ass out of 'u' and 'Mass Effect'.
Well you know what they say happens when you 'assume'. You make an ass out of 'u' and 'Mass Effect'.

Harbinger is the name of the Reaper who is controlling the Collectors. Occasionally he shouts “ASSUMING DIRECT CONTROL” and jumps into the body of one of the Collectors so he can face you on the battlefield. He throws some cheeseball combat taunts out. Stuff like, “This hurts you, Shepard.” Then you kick his ass and go back to what you were doing. He only takes control of the low-level mooks. He doesn’t ever try to drive one of the larger foes that actually have a chance of killing you.

This is a truly stunning level of perfect wrongness. There are so many layers of faulty decisions here that it’s like peeling an onion made entirely of bad ideas…

Half Time CH11: Transylpainya

“This next team,” says the assistant coach, “is called the Wolfenburg Diggers.”

“Get the fuck out of here.”

I’m saving myself the trouble of transliterating my hilarious nasal wheeze, a symptom of whatever pox the gods brought out of cold storage to punish me for beating elves with halflings. That, or the drinking, bad food, stress, and self-loathing. But as my assistant stares at me past my mound of calcified tissue mache, I’m getting the sense that not only is he not joking, he’s probably waiting for me to repeat that last command for real. Okay. Let’s wrap up the tactical assessment so I can get some more sleep.

“Wolfenburg Diggers,” I repeat. “Is that just exactly what it sounds like? No way is that exactly what it sounds like.”

“It is…wolves, from a burg, who have dug-up undead supporting players. It’s not off the nose, exactly.”

“Is that really how other coaches operate? Did this team almost get called the Shittsville Badhobbits?”

Hangout Steamtroller: Medieval II Total War

For those of you who missed it, or who just want to watch it again, here is the archive of the first half of the hangout we did last week. Josh plays one of the Total War games using the Steam controller. It wasn’t a perfect experience, but it was better than I would have thought possible.

I still really like my Steam controller, but I still haven’t found a good game to use it with.
