The Motivator

Via Ministry of Minor Perfidy I find a link to this thing, which lets you make your own faux-motivational posters. This is a lot like making comics, so I thought it might be fun to try. Somehow it all went wrong on me…

Demotivator, Fanservice, Girls in Swimsuits, Beach

Demotivator, Collectables collection, %Anime figures

Demotivator, Fanservice, Anime Collectables collection Otaku

These were coming accross as condescending and mean-spirited so I had to quit. Maybe I’ll try again when I’m in a different mood. I’m not sure what my problem is today.

Yes, they are condescending and mean-spirited, but they’re also pretty funny.

  2. Shamus says:

I don’t know why this happens. Sometimes all my sense of humor wants to do is belittle people. I kept trying to be witty and kept ending up with some sort of David Spade style mockery.

Honestly, I think the figurine collections are pretty interesting, and anyone who’s watched Najica all the way through has no business making fun of fan service.

I just tried again and the malaise has not lifted. Bah.

    KNIFE STABBINGS IN THE FACE
hey at least you still have your testicales

  4. David V.S. says:

Well, there is a tradition of “motivational posters” that belittle (http://www.despair.com/viewall.html).

So you are being mean, but also true to the genre of fake motivational posters. ;-)

Hm. Making sayings that do not belittle yet have wit is tricky. Here are the best I can do at the moment with your three:

Fanservice – Helping shows with too many characters use more than hair color to keep characters distinct. Right, honey?

Collectables – Because fan cred can be as aggressive as any pocket monster.

Otaku – Zeno racing to an anime convention.

  5. BeckoningChasm says:

The thing is, these types of posters seemed designed for that kind of sarcasm. I’m not really sure it’s possible to do otherwise, especially since the website is called “Despair.”

Fan Service – Keeping people away from Divergence Eve since 2002.

Collectables – Sometimes it’s true: only you appreciate this stuff.

Otaku – Helping Robert of Anime Corner Store pay for a boat.

Damn, now I’m going all cynical.

  6. Wonderduck says:

Sure, we belittle the otakus (otaki?) of the world, but take a look at the Collectables one… that’s a pretty darn sweet projector he’s got there! Those ain’t cheap.

Better than mine, but then, mine was free, so it balances out…

  7. ubu roi says:

    FANSERVICE: Because mom woudln’t understand.

COLLECTABLES: They’re just an investment. No, really. Hey, no touching Mirabelle!

OTAKU: Becuase animé is better than crack, and cheaper in the long run!

  8. Old Man Matt says:

Somehow or another I don’t recognize those girls in the first poster. Which anime are they from? I really like that one, but the other two look less motivating than creepy.

  9. Andrew F. says:

The fanservice poster girls are from This Ugly and Beautiful World/Kono Minikuku mo Utsukushii Sekai, a 2004 attempt by Studio Gainax to duplicate the success of Mahoromatic by having the same production team and voice actors do a completely unrelated show. As a Gainax production, it is in fact loaded with fanservice, but the plot and such are actually pretty decent IMHO. Picked up by ADV Films earlier this year and currently being released on Region 1 DVD, with the third and final volume due in November.

  10. Will says:

FANSERVICE: Because anime boobs are always flawless.

COLLECTABLES: Pray to God you never have to move.

OTAKU: No. Seriously. Pray that you never have to move again.

  11. Shamus says:

Check out the one Fledge came up with at that haibane.info link above: Funny yet not mean-spirited towards the reader. That’s where I was trying to go, but I just couldn’t get there.

  12. noneim says:

Otaku is singular and plural depending on context. That’s how japanese works…

  13. EMMA says:

jajajaj COMO ODIO A LOS MALDITOS OTAKUS, DAN LASTIMA

  14. OTAKU says:

    YOU MUST DIE!!

    OTAKU’S POWA-DESUKA!!!!

  15. i kill weeaboos says:

    >>OTAKU
    hows about no.
    bad grammar too

  16. D. Darko says:

The last two needs to be questioned as to why? Simply why? And most importantly how much was spent.

  17. gabyta says:

    holiiis!!!!

un besooo i aguante los otaku!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    x 100pre

  18. Koiya says:

I actully like it, i would say i am an otaku but somehow not i surf, go clubbing, dirtbiking and paint balling. somehow i dont think normal otakus do any of that kind of stuff :) anyway i look forward to more of your posters

^fairly sure the one above is spam…

Also the fanservice one had a great idea but did seem a tad mean. If I did it then it would go:

FANSERVICE – Because 7 is better than 1

    (or something like that)
