The Official Twenty Sided Guild

So Guild Wars 2 is coming out this week. Well, actually, it’s coming out next Tuesday for all the people that didn’t pre-purchase it, but I’m sure you’re all too cool to have passed up an opportunity to pay $60 for an MMO you hadn’t even played yet.

But regardless of how wise or unwise you are with your prospective purchases, we here at Twenty Sided (which is to say me, Randy, Chris, and Mumbles) are putting together a Twenty Sided guild in Guild Wars 2. Shamus would like to help, but apparently he’s busy fighting Kai Leng and saving the Council or maybe just writing a book and getting ready to move. I’m not really sure.

Following our typical “What’s a plan?” style of planning, we don’t actually… have a name for the Guild yet. I suggested something along the lines of “Eikosi League” both because it sounds suitably fantastic and because “eikosi” is Greek for “twenty” and the first component of the word “icosahedron” – the shape of the twenty sided die. Randy thinks that might be a bit too obscure, though, so if you have a better suggestion, then by all means, suggest it.

Oh yeah, and we can’t have the obvious guild tag [d20] because apparently you can’t have numbers in your guild tag. So we’re looking for one of those too.

We also don’t know which server we’ll be on, but not, in this case, because of a lack of planning. See, in Guild Wars 2, your home server is largely unimportant except for determining which team you’ll be on for World vs World (the great big realm PvP mode). Eventually you’ll be able to guest to any other server you have friends on and play with them like you would anyone on your own server. I say “eventually” because guesting isn’t apparently going to be in the game at launch. But, on the upside, you’ll be able to transfer home servers for free with no time restrictions after launch until they get the guesting system going.

Anyway, Randy is scoping out the WvW scene and trying to find a good server to make our permanent home, which is taking longer than expected because apparently a bunch of other guilds are doing the same thing. But don’t worry, we’ll figure it out and have a post with the full server information before the game comes out.

And remember, you can join multiple guilds at once in Guild Wars 2, so joining our guild won’t keep you from joining your other friends’ guild too. And we plan to do just about everything, from PvE to PvP and everything in between.

See you guys in game.

Mass Effect 3 EP4: Gigantic Space MacGuffin of Doom

So it figures that for the one episode this week where Shamus lets the rest of us get a word in edgewise, he isn’t around to post a long cliff’s notes of what he got wrong!

And even then we missed massive chunks of what’s going on. Like the whole “TIM wants to indoctrinate the Reapers” thing. Oh well, that left us plenty of time to talk about a completely different and spectacularly unsuccessful BioWare game. Also, the color purple, Chris being happy, and the fact that Rutskarn is a chihuahua. Yep, this is the best episode we’ve done so far. No doubt about that.

The talk about Deadspace was a reference to this: EA Says Dead Space 3 Has To Sell 5 Million To Survive. As a thoughtful commentator I would like to invite the captains of this particular industry to go out of business as soon as possible. How stupid do you have to be to continue to spend more and more, to make games that can’t possibly hope to meet their ever-increasing sales projections? I had many gripes with Dead Space 2, and none of them had anything to do with how much was spent on the game. In fact, my own wishlist of changes (getting rid of the quicktime-event driven spectacle, cutting way back on the total number of encounters, and cutting back on the NPC conversations) would have made it cheaper.

So now Mumbles has explained to me that I liked Jack and forgot. Actually, looking back: I loved her loyalty mission, but I still think her boobstraps were juvenile pandering. In any case, I’m wondering if my idea holds true: I have been thinking that the ME1 cast were far and away the most popular companions, but maybe ME2 wins in that department. (If not, it’s not for lack of trying. If you go for all the DLC then ME2 Shepard has enough people to form a baseball team.)

It’s true that I argue that BioWare might have used shared models to save money, and I even offer an example of how I used a similar technique myself. To rebut my own argument, I’ll point out that I was ONE GUY with a budget of weeks.

When Mumbles and Chris start singing “We’ve got dead chick”, they’re singing to the tune of Ice Hair, which you should not listen to under any circumstances.

Here is Digital Gumballs, the blog where Mrs. Mumbles and Mr. Gumballs write about videogames. This is the post about girlfriend mode, which you are encouraged to discuss over there and not here because… basically because I see where that thread is going and I don’t want to get on that particular ride right now.

Mass Effect 3 Part 1: We Fight or We Doy

This is the 300th episode of Spoiler Warning. Seriously. We’ve made three hundred of these things. That is a lot of spoiled stuff. This seems like a great time to begin our long-delayed Mass Effect 3 season.

I should probably apologize for this start to the series. Often people accuse us of “just looking for stuff to nitpick”, which isn’t really fair or true. We’re usually looking for stuff to talk about, and sometimes those things are positive and sometimes they’re negative. But in our first block of episodes, I seem to remember spending about two hours hating the game and whinging on about Every Damn Little Thing.

What happened is this:

Hitmas the Second: Modern Warfare Part 3

And now for the elusive Sunday episode. Of course it wasn’t planned this way, but we recorded these right before I moved with the intention of posting them when I could. On the upside, I’m now completely moved in to my new house, which is better than your house, and we’ll finally be doing Mass Effect 3 this week.

Naturally, as this is the last episode of our unplanned look at Modern Warfare 3, we spend most of the episode talking about unrelated things and end by complaining about Borderlands 2. We’re awesome like that.

And so our impromtu romp through Modern Warfare 3 continues. For those of you wanting more complaining and merciless mocking of the game, you might be happy with this episode.
