Spoiler Warning BS Session

The plan for last night was to have 8 by Zombies begin at 11PM GMT and run for an hour-ish. Planning ahead, the cast met half an hour early so that we could subdue all of this wayward technology before the audience showed up. But people showed up and began watching while we were still setting up. And then it took an extra hour to get it all working.

Oops.

On the upside, I guess some of you got to see what an absolute clusterblog it is to get this thing working. We need to stream the low-res stream to the viewers, record the vent chat for later, use FRAPS to record the high-res video. Then there was the added challenge of letting the public hear the two sides of our 4 vs. 4 game, getting the game itself working with alltalk on so the teams could speak to one another… gah. We’ve been doing this for almost three years, and it just doesn’t get any easier.

On the upside, Chris kept his stream running after the game, and we sort of hung out with the audience in an unplanned after party. We talked to the folks in the chat room and everyone got to listen in on our usual post-game bull sessions.

Some of the stuff we discussed:

  1. We should do a podcast – Maybe. A podcast is kind of formal, requires some editing, some organization, and would basically be another Spoiler Warning level commitment for us. We’re willing, but we also discussed…
  2. Hangouts – Do we need to get all formal and do a proper iTunes/MP3 release with a fixed direction, clean audio, and all the boring crap edited out? Or would it be better to just do what we did last night, where one of us has a videogame feed rolling and we all hang out in the Livestream chat? The audience has an open chat feed, which we can read. We do voice chat, which you hear through the stream. It’s easy to set up, and it’s a lot more interactive since we can have a two-way conversation.
  3. A forum – I’ve been vacillating on this for years. I’m flattered that people like this site well enough to want to hang out here. On the other hand, I’m very wary of disturbing the community we’ve got. This place is polite and friendly. This is not an accident. This is a product of my secret moderation techniques. (Secret: Moderation is performed on basis of attitude, disposition, and communication skills. There’s no room for rules-lawyering because there are no posted rules.) This is the only system that makes sense to me and the only way I know how to run things. Would this work in a forum? Would I be able to keep up with the extra load? Would the forum eat into the discussion here on the blog? These are things that worry me.
  4. My archives and the general difficulty of finding things. I’m having this conversation a lot. A friend recently pointed out that a newcomer could arrive here, become a fan, and yet have no idea that I’ve written a book. Several, actually. This is a thing I am thinking about.
  5. Misc – The new Tomb Raider Trailer, Spy Party, Origin, Mass Effect 3, Livestream, Tera, Feminism, Left 4 Dead, Josh & Rutskarn meeting face-to-face, and a bunch of other stuff I’ve forgotten. The hangout lasted for about six hours after the game ended, so I can’t begin to remember it all.

Thanks to everyone who stopped by, participated, and hung out. Feel free to share your thoughts on any of the above, with the exception of Mass Effect 3. We’re about to cover that game, and I’d rather we not get sick of the topic before we even reach the New Game menu.

Tonight! At 11PM GMT! Josh vs. Rutskarn! Left 4 Dead 2! Versus gameplay! It’s the Spoiler Warning All-stars! And friends! Exclamation! Points! Are! Exciting!

As I mentioned earlier in the week, we’re all getting together to play Left 4 Dead 2 in versus mode. We’ll be streaming the results, and next week we’ll have a highlight reel of the event.

I prepared for tonight’s game with a rigorous program of never playing Left 4 Dead 2 versus mode, ever. So odds are, I won’t even know the map. According to Steam, I’ve clocked 6 hours in Left 4 Dead 2. On the other hand, I’ve clocked 260+ hours on the first game. So I should do really well as long as versus mode doesn’t require any knowledge of the new weapons, maps, or special infected. Or versus mode itself. So… yeah.

This is pretty much your classic gladiatorial match-up of convicted prisoners vs. ravenous lions. I don’t think the outcome is in doubt here. This is more about the spectacle than cheering for a particular side.

Team Josh (The Lions)

You can spectate the game from Josh’s POV here. (Limit 50 viewers.)
You can spectate the game from Randy’s POV here.

Josh, Glitch, Randy, Chris

Team Buttskarn (Those Who Are About To Die)

You will be able to watch the Rutskarn POV here.

Rutskarn, Mumbles, Shamus, Jarenth

Thanks to Steve Online for the title idea.

Series that Went on Too Long

In an attempt to placate your ravenous appetite for content, allow me to kick off a discussion. In the previous post on Homestar Runner, Mr Guy says:

So, at risk of starting The Thread With No Bottom, let's consider the flip side. I believe Shamus' premise is that HSR went out at the right time â€" before it got stale or beat itself into the ground. What are other similar endeavors that chose the other path â€" went on way longer than they should have, and suffered for it?

Good question. I’ll start us off with a few:

I think I’ve mentioned in the past that I’m a huge fan of Homestar, Strong Bad, and the rest of the inhabitants of Free Country, USA. I love the world. I love the characters. I love the music. I’ve absorbed the website about as many times as a person can usefully do so.

I’ve played the videogame adaptation / spinoff, Strong Bad’s Cool Game For Attractive People. I regard it as some of the best comedy-adventure games available, right up there with the original Monkey Island. The games are arguably a fulfillment of the website itself – the culmination of a decade of in-jokes and ridiculous lore-building. I can’t objectively judge how well the games would work for someone new to Homestar, but for a long-time fan they were a concentrated dose of humor and ridiculosity.

(I even used the game as an excuse to do my own crossover mashup… thing.)

Spoiler Warning: Left 8 Dead

On June 21st (this Thursday) we’ll be teaming up to play some Left 4 Dead versus mode. We will live-stream the game in progress. It begins at 7PM East Coast time in the USA. (Midnight GMT.) EDIT: 11PM GMT. Stupid daylight savings.

While we’re still waiting for confirmation from some participants, the slated teams are:

TEAM JOSH

Josh, Glitch, Randy, Chris

TEAM BUTTSKARN

Rutskarn, Mumbles, Shamus, Jarenth

Eventually Josh will also be posting a highlight reel for those who miss the stream. But that will just be the highlight reel. If you want to see the whole thing you’ll have to tune in. I think Ruts and Josh will both be Livestreaming their respective POV, so you can watch from either perspective. Or both.

I’ll put up the links to the individual streams when the event goes live. Hope to see you there. Er. I guess won’t see you. I’ll be covered in boomer salsa. But I hope you’re there anyway.

The Slow Death of Netflix

So I’m watching the latest Errant Signal, which is about Max Payne 3. During the vid, Chris mentions Man On Fire. I’ve never seen that movie, but I do remember wanting to check it out at some point.

I hop over to Netflix and do a search…

Uh… no content today. Or tomorrow, probably. And now that I’m thinking about it, Sunday’s looking a little iffy, too. I dunno. But WAIT! Here’s some LOL RANDUMB stuff from YouTube:

Link (YouTube)

So you’ve got that going for you. Enjoy your weekend.

EDIT: Now that I’m thinking about it: Note the “snow” they use to transition between vignettes in this movie. When was the last time anyone saw real, actual broadcast snow? In the US we went all digital a few years ago, and a vast majority of the population was using cable long before that. I don’t know when, but at some point televisions defaulted to showing a blue screen when it was set to a dead channel, instead of blasting you in the face with full-volume white noise. (Always hated that when channel-surfing at night.)

The point is, it’s entirely possible that among the ten million or so people that have watched this video, some are probably teenagers who have never seen actual broadcast snow and might not even understand where it comes from.

Also: Remember having to adjust the timing on a TV to keep the image from “rolling”? That vanished at the end of the 70’s for me, and I don’t see any references to it in popular culture. I see people ironically using old TV test patterns (or parodies of such) from the 50’s, but the process of fiddling with the vertical alignment on a TV seems to have faded from memory. I seem to remember there being a horizontal alignment knob as well, but in my experience you never needed to mess with that one. Turning it would just cause the image to shear one way or the other.

Also, remember when I was young, thin, and my knees didn’t hurt so much? No? Well, there was a time. Trust me.

From The Archives:

What is Piracy?

It seems like a simple question, but it turns out everyone has a different idea of right and wrong in the digital world.

This Scene Breaks a Character

Small changes to the animations can have a huge impact on how the audience interprets a scene.

Gamers Aren’t Toxic

This is a horrible narrative that undermines the hobby through crass stereotypes. The hobby is vast, gamers come from all walks of life, and you shouldn't judge ANY group by its worst members.

A Telltale Autopsy

What lessons can we learn from the abrupt demise of this once-impressive games studio?

id Software Coding Style

When the source code for Doom 3 was released, we got a look at some of the style conventions used by the developers. Here I analyze this style and explain what it all means.

Bethesda’s Launcher is Everything You Expect

From the company that brought us Fallout 76 comes a storefront / Steam competitor. It's a work of perfect awfulness. This is a monument to un-usability and anti-features.

Deus Ex and The Treachery of Labels

Deus Ex Mankind Divided was a clumsy, tone-deaf allegory that thought it was clever, and it managed to annoy people of all political stripes.

Video Compression Gone Wrong

How does image compression work, and why does it create those ugly spots all over some videos and not others?

Philosophy of Moderation

The comments on most sites are a sewer of hate, because we're moderating with the wrong goals in mind.

Playstation 3

What was the problem with the Playstation 3 hardware and why did Sony build it that way?
