Fallout 3 EP13: Enter the Matrix?

You know what would be great here? Seeing as how this is a Fallout game, we have a great opportunity to offer the player lot of different things to do. Maybe they can hack the simulation from the outside, without needing to go in. Maybe they could use lockpicking to reach the master controls. Maybe they could try to reach the core and cut the power, which would require them to fight a lot of tough robots. Maybe they could use the repair skill to bust Dad out of his relaxation pod. So many possibilities!

“But then the player would miss out on tranquility lane! We put so much work into that!”

Yeah, see. This game isn’t exactly starved for content. I think you can afford to miss a bit here and there if it means the player can make interesting choices.

“But they DO get choices! After getting stupidly trapped in the simulation, they can escape the stupid good way or the stupid evil way.”

Sigh.

And then after you escape the Matrix there’s yet ANOTHER instance of a conversation where someone asks you why you left vault 101, and you can’t answer it truthfully or sensibly. Arg.

For those of you keeping score at home: This is the second vault Dad has ruined.

 


 

Coming Soon: Dishonored

As many of you guessed, Spoiler Warning’s next season will cover Dishonored. If all goes to plan, we’ll record this weekend and the first episode will appear next week.

It was basically a horse race between this and Skyrim. The main problem with Skyrim is that it completely failed to grab Josh. He never even finished the main quest. When discussing the game, we really couldn’t come up with any particular part that we had a burning desire to discuss. The game isn’t stupid and broken like Fallout 3. It’s not emotionally engaging like Walking Dead. It’s not atmospheric and mechanically varied like Half-Life 2. It’s not a tragic failure like Alan Wake or an over-hyped pile of crap like Assassin’s Creed 2. Bethesda played it safe and the result is a fun game that doesn’t leave us with a lot to discuss.

We’re not ruling out Skyrim forever, but it’s fallen into that strange space that Alpha Protocol occupied for so long: Good enough for us to play, but not interesting enough that we’re clamoring to talk about it. For me, The Walking Dead was our best season so far. Not because we liked the game, but because we constantly found ourselves wanting to talk about it and compare notes.

In the meantime: Dishonored. I’m on my second play-through now. Also I forgot how fun it was to photoshop the Spoiler Warning title onto random screenshots. We’ll be doing that again this season.

 


 

Fallout 3 EP12: Memorial Memorandum

While you’re watching, don’t forget about the glorious Fallout 3 spreadsheet of fun and alcohol poisoning, which is derived from the Fallout 3 drinking game. It even has charts! Note the new section at the bottom. Given the astounding number of drinks being imbibed, there’s a new section that will keep track of the blood alcohol of the current theoretical drinker. When their BAC reaches lethal levels, they are pronounced dead and a new drinker is brought in. The game has killed two people so far, with most of the damage happening in Operation Anchorage.

Also, the author of those charts (Deadfast on this site) should totally put some kind of self-credit on there someplace.

My Zombie Plan, Part 4

And so this series drags ever onward. Before I get back to the making of silly plans for an even sillier eventuality, I should address a few remarks I see coming up again and again:

Q: Hey Shamus, wouldn’t it make more sense to make your defenses using razor wire / bulldozer / .50 machine gun nest?

Obviously any of that would be better than wooden pikes. I’m sort of torn. On one side I’ve got people challenging me for giving myself too many unlikely resources, and on the other people are wondering why I’d ignore such things. Earth-moving equipment, razor wire, and military hardware are all cool stuff. But they’re also kind of exotic. Yes, they’re easier to acquire after the zompocalypse than before, but a lot of other people are likely to come to the same conclusion. Rather than haggle over just how hard it would be to acquire, relocate, operate, and maintain a bulldozer, I just decided to leave the fancy stuff out. You can assume that if our team happens across two miles of unattended barbed wire and a bulldozer with the key in the ignition, we’d put that stuff to use.

Q: You should go to the library!

That’s not a question.

Q: Sigh. Fine. WHY DON’T YOU GO TO THE LIBRARY?!?

That’s an awesome idea. My only concern with that idea is that a lot of people have that idea. Same goes for Home Depot. Those places might even get cleaned out in the first days, before everything falls completely apart. Rather than assume I’d be one of the lucky ones, or that I would get there first, let’s just assume I’d stop by, see the place is empty or overrun, and move on.

Q: How many people are in your group?

Yeah. This is my mistake. I should have nailed this down at the start. If not for the reader, then at least for my own benefit. Sometimes I’m picturing a group of six or so, like Lee’s group. Sometimes I’m picturing a group of a dozen adults, plus children. We have no way to guess at how many people survive. (This value is always set to “whatever the writer says it is for the purposes of the story.”) So we should have simply chosen a useful number at the outset and stuck with it. Obviously the population of the group will have a huge impact on what sort of projects we can undertake. Two dozen adults could put up a pike fence in a few days. If we’re six adults plus children, then such a project is probably way out of reach and we should focus on fortifying our homes and staying quiet.

Disclosure Alert

So Spoiler Warning season 10 is done. I’ll tell you that our next game is NOT Alpha Protocol. That’s a shame, since Alpha Protocol is a really interesting specimen. Being an Obsidian title, it’s an interesting mix of choice, dialog wheels, unconventional characters, wonky gameplay, and hilarious bugs. Obsidian Entertainment is the mad scientist of the RPG world, constantly doing new things that usually blow up in their face but which sometimes move us forward.

The game has been a candidate for Spoiler Warning since season 4. After passing over the game eight times, it’s pretty clear that if we were going to cover this game, we would have put a ring on it by now.

But!

Someone else has taken up the charge. Some folks you might recognize from the comments on this very site – @Aldowyn @anaphysik and @newdarkcloud – have launched the curiously titled Disclosure Alert show. Here’s episode 1:

The Walking Dead EP28: You’re Gonna Carry That Weight

And so we come to the end of The Walking Dead. This final stretch of the game is powerful, emotionally resonant, and well-written. Well, except the part where Clem carries Lee through a zombie horde and into a building. Because now is not the time for eye-rolling and guffaws.

A strange thing about this final sequence is that I have this distinct memory of Clementine bashing up that last zombie with many small, bloodless blows. Did I imagine that? Was I so caught up in the horror of the moment that I forgot how brutal it really was? Is there more than one way for this scene to play out, perhaps with Clem using different weapons? I have no idea. I will note that I was shocked at how gruesome this looked while we were recording.

Now I’m wondering: Where is the series headed next?

My Zombie Plan, Part 3

According to the previous entries, we’re a few weeks into the zompocalypse. It’s late-ish summer, perhaps mid-August. Once things settled down we formed a little band of survivors, I miraculously survived, and even more miraculously I was chosen leader. We scouted around for a few days looking at farms before choosing the best location we could find.

Assuming we survived all that and the writers didn’t decide to bump me off early, then we’re now living in a cluster of houses along a river near a farm. We’re operating under a “no one left behind” mentality. Now we need to get down to the business of surviving.
