This week I’ve played a few game demos from steam’s next fest.

One of the two of any note was Sir, We Have an Orc Problem. Just an incremental tower defense, with only five levels in the demo, but I enjoyed it. There isn’t a grid to place towers on, instead you place them freely in the build zones and adjust the cone of fire to where you want. The enemies also don’t follow a set path, they behave more like individual physics objects being pulled towards the end zone.

The other game of note is Casualties: Unknown. A 2d exploration game with an extremely unforgiving injury system. The setting is that you’re playing as an anthropomorphic character whose species is treated as expendable fodder, and are tasked with descending into dangerous caves filled with trash, fauna, and depression.

I don’t think a game has ever made me feel so terrible for getting my character injured. The first run I did I fell off a cliff and got internal bleeding, broken bones, and a concussion. There’s less of a sense of I messed up in a video game, and more of a I’m going to die in a cave, and it’s not going to be quick. The injuries are truly unpleasant, your character will vomit blood (which is yellow), wince in pain, and get panic attacks.

It is an extremely cool game, but I cannot recommend it if you’re at all squeamish.

So how’s everyone else doing?

Girls und Panzer: Captain does her best! Pt. 2

I was really suffering last night. The last couple of days I’ve had on-and-off periods of general unwellness, and finally about evening yesterday I reached the point of deciding to go to bed early. I slept maybe an hour but sinus pain woke me up. It was one of those things where I could lay on the left side and my right sinus would drain into my left sinus, but not any other direction. If I rolled over onto my right side it would take about twenty minutes for my left sinus to drain to the right. If I laid on my back I just felt like I was being strangled. For a while I could lay *just slightly* to the left or right, alternatively, and keep the pain of a clogged sinus away, but I eventually got back up about 11:30.

Around midnight to 12:30 it finally started draining and allergy symptoms hit hard. My eyes were watering, I was coughing, choking, blowing my nose every thirty seconds; all while chugging H.E.B. brand Sprite. This took about three and half hours to calm down before I could head back to bed. Which, in turn, meant I slept in today; quite a bit. The whole time I was up I worked on file management on my computer. I had a directory of videos that needed sorted, renamed, duplicates removed, etc. It’s been sitting there since around 2021 or 2022. About 30% of it is done now. *Maybe* 50%, as a lot of renamed files are pushed below my working point instead of above. HOWEVER, the categorization topic that dominates the naming structure is still below me, too; and that will likely be were most of the files in the directory are. I suspect my interest in and attention to archiving in this way is what is commonly referred to as an “Autistic Special Interest.” I can talk for hours about how I would organize a directory of files. And yes, I can apply that to a database as well. I did it professionally for years. But here’s the weird part. Technically, if you organize the data through a database, file names are most useful as location or time markers. The organizing data belongs solely to the database. “Tags” in modern parlance, you might say. I *can* do that, but I would rather the file name and directory structure store all the most-useful information. In a good file system or file type, you can always store meta information, just as you would in a database.

Anyway, I stopped doing that to finish Episode 4 of Girls und Panzer: Captain does her best!

Getting Back to Marvel

Once upon a time I was elated with the MCU. There were consistently fun movies coming out multiple times per year to look forward to. They were funny, action packed powerhouses. Slowly over time, though, I grew exhausted with the formula.

I was never a HUGE super hero guy to begin with. I always loved Spiderman and Batman because of their shows. Batman the Animated Series is still elite television, by the way. However that’s basically where my interest began and ended. So when Iron Man came out and was an absolute banger I was pleasantly surprised. Then Thor and the Edward Norton Hulk were pretty great too. That made me a lot more interested in the Avengers Universe.

Honestly the build to Infinity War and then Endgame felt amazing to me. The series built up a big head of steam but the payoff felt a bit lackluster. And that was it for me. I had my fill, since I’d watched nothing MCU except the Spiderman movies.

I had officially become overwhelmed by the content. I can’t be expected to watch all the MCU content out there to keep up with story beats and character development. I’ve heard great things about several movies and shows, but I just don’t really care anymore.

I say all this because The Punisher brought me back in. Maybe it’s the edgy boy in me that wants my content more gritty and dark. Maybe the lack of a constant drive to have levity injected into scenes to keep the tone lighter. Whatever it was, I’m interested again. I like the somewhat grounded feel. I like the lack of superpowers bailing characters out. I’m enjoying the adult tone. I only wish it went all out on that tone instead of pulling all the punches and ending up with a PG-13ish tinge. That’s a conversation for another time, though.

But that leaves me curious. Have any of you guys fallen off the MCU bandwagon and hopped back on? I’m genuinely curious where that happened for people.

Just a little bit this week.

Played some Rimworld. Maximizing melee stats has been funny, I accepted a quest that had my colony fight off 48 cougars in exchange for ~600 gold and some armor. My colonists faired quite well, having only the loss of a hand as any injury of significance.

We got a new fridge today. It keeps things cold.

How’s everyone else this week?

Girls und Panzer: Captain does her best! Pt. 1

After the successful conclusion of the practice battle, while Miho and the other Sensha-do team members are perusing the “redecorated” tanks, Student Council President Anzu suggests to Momo (monocle girl)

…to which Momo replies “I’ll go call them.”

We don’t find out until later, as I documented last time, this will be a practice match against St. Gloriana Girls’ College. St. Gloriana is a consistently strong team that has won the national championship.

Bad vs Not For Me

I say all the time that horror and comedy are the two most personal areas of life in terms of taste. They both prey on expectation to make their impact. That’s why hearing your drunk uncle tell the same joke for the 50th time is exhausting instead of humorous. It’s why knock knock jokes are mentally draining by the time you hit adulthood, too. Same goes for scares. The first time I watched Jeepers Creepers 2 I immediately developed a fear of scarecrows that I haven’t fully shaken, but I won’t have a panic attack watching the same scene again and again because the novelty is gone. The only scare left is the residual fear from the first time I saw it. And it’s also why the “mirror scare” in horror movies just doesn’t really work anymore unless you throw in a misdirect. We expect it now as a culture.

It’s called a segue

“I try to imagine what Twenty Sided would be like if Pat was running it. That would be a very different kind of website.” – Shamus, Jul 7, 2016

I don’t know about running it. How about some totally unprofessional hot takes on a beloved franchise, instead?
