Spoiler Warning Season 2×27: Don’t Fear the Reaver

No, actually the title is giving you bad advice. Do, in fact, fear the reaver. At the earliest possible opportunity and every chance you get. Particularly if your game is bugged out and it’s throwing reavers at you before you even ding level 10.

Not that I’m bitter or anything.

Hello, person from the future. This space used to have an embed from the video hosting site Viddler. The video is gone now. If you want to find out why and laugh at Viddler in the process, you can read the entire silly story for yourself.

At any rate, the video is gone. Sorry. On the upside, we're gradually re-posting these old videos to YouTube. Check the Spoiler Warning page to see the full index.

Next episode brings our epic 28 part bitch & moan session to an end. After which we’ll be covering Galaxian.

  1. ToastyVirus says:

    Galaxian!

    Just what I wanted!

    1. Wonderduck says:

No, not Galaxian! EVERYBODY does Galaxian! Do something obscure, like Gyruss! Yeah, Gyruss! That’s the stuff right there!

/seriously, why doesn’t anybody give love to Gyruss?

      1. Rutskarn says:

Star Force was where it’s at.

  2. somebodys_kid says:

Damn! I was hoping for Tetris!!

    1. Sumanai says:

      “Stop stacking!”

      1. Jarenth says:

“Frigging L-shaped blocks, how do they woorrrkkk!”

    2. NotACat says:

Am I the only one who won’t be able to play Tetris now without hearing Josh yelling “Stop dropping things on me!” in the background?

  3. X2-Eliah says:

Galaxian.. Wasn’t that the language used in KOTOR? Which was one of the suggested games for the next LP?

    Poor shame. HL2 was better.

    1. Factoid says:

Nah, my money is still on HL2 or Deus Ex. I dont’ think they’d do another Bioware game so soon.

    2. acronix says:

Galaxian is an Space Invaders clone, too. I had it in my NES.

      1. Soylent Dave says:

Galaxian was by far the best game I had for my Atari 2600.

But, as you may gather from the phrase “best game for the Atari 2600”, that isn’t saying a great deal.

        (Spiderman was pretty good, too)

  4. Sekundaari says:

It seems that the series is ending on a positive note. I like that.

And now I want to see a game that lets you crawl in the ventilation ducts, but it makes a horrible racket, you’ll probably get stuck if you try it with any armor on, and the enemies will shoot you through the duct anyway.

    1. Robyrt says:

Bioshock does this with its crawlspaces. You’re not any quieter, enemies still know where you are, and your vision bobs and weaves annoyingly.

    2. Someone says:

I think we actually ran out of things to complain about. I cant even come up with a good rant to post in comments. The only thing left is the awful ending (which I bitched about like 3 times already).

      …the Tesla Cannon looks uninspired?

      This is just embarassing.

      1. 4th Dimension says:

Nothing to bitch about? How about the armor that lets you breathe? You know how all NPCs have the breathing animation, that makes theirs chest rise and fall? Well, the thing that annoys me is that that, animation is still applied even after you are fully suited in like 10cm of hardened steel. And it still ‘breathes’, stretches and consults as if made out of rubber or cloth.

      2. acronix says:

Why don´t we complain about why the presidential metro can be accessed by a manhole in the middle of the street?
Or the reaver´s stupidly high health…? Oh, wait. We alredy complained about high health in DLCs…Then what about…uh…the…thing that…uh…

You are right. This is embarassing.

    3. Atarlost says:

I think I recall Return to Wolfenstein having a scripted event where someone blows up the ductwork you’re crawling through with a grenade. If you hesitate exactly the wrong amount it’s an instakill, but if you either stop completely when you hear voices or keep going you won’t be in the part that blows up.

  5. guy says:

The answer being worse than the question is called a Voodoo Shark. Coined by sci-fi debris.

    1. guy says:

      RE: the end.

They’re really more like giant cherries.

      1. Someone says:

        “Stop cherrying me!”
        “Stop shooting me!”
        “Stop shooting lightning at me!”
        “Stop crushing me!”
        “Stop impaling me!”
“Stop dropping the moon on me!”

Oh yeah. IWBTG would definitely make for a good SW season.

        1. Astrolounge says:

Yeah, but there are about 600 LP’s of that game already.

  6. Bear says:

The Feral Ghoul Reaver: the main reason to run through the Point Lookout Expansion…

  7. Sagretti says:

*shudder* Reavers. I barely brought myself to play Fallout 3 in the first place because Feral Ghouls freaked me out, so Reavers are pretty much my worst nightmare. It didn’t help that my game had the same problem as Shamus’s, and they started spawning when I was level 15 or so. Super Mutant Overlords aren’t too bad, because you can dodge their fire and keep disarming them. Reavers, not so much.

Team Fortress Sidenote: Engineers no longer curse you for standing their, spamming turret destruction. They simply thank you for the guaranteed critical hits their new shotgun gets before blowing your head off.

    1. X2-Eliah says:

The fact that Reavers actually turn invincible when they start glitching (feet go on a tap-dance session) doesn’t really help matters, of course.

  8. Shamus, do you guys have enough outtakes to make sort of a outtakes episode and put that up as Ep 2×29 for example?

  9. Josh, Rutskarn and Shamus I just want to say I really love this series and am looking forward to the next one.

I’m not sure about the other folks her but the main reason I watch is not because of the games, but rather you guys playing the game.
The game just provides the context while you guys provide the content. *laughs*

I also had the thought of… what if some guy from Bethesda is watching this season?
Or worse, if he made some of the particular things you guys hated.
I bet some of his co-workers would look like question marks when he runs away from his computer crying (while shouting “Shamus is so mean”, and they lean over and sees this site, scratching their heads. *laughs*

    1. Shamus says:

I worry about this now and again. I know how bad it stings when someone digs into a post or comic I made in a few hours. How much worse is it what it’s scathing insults delivered to a jeering audience over something you worked on for weeks?

It’s the kind of thing that might stay with you for a few days.

I like to think that the artists know about the flaws we’re pointing out and were just never given the time or freedom to make it right. “I failed because my boss is a short-sighted hack with no soul” is a lot better than “I failed because I am a sham and should never be allowed to write another videogame ever”.

    2. Daemian Lucifer says:

“I'm not sure about the other folks her but the main reason I watch is not because of the games, but rather you guys playing the game.
The game just provides the context while you guys provide the content. *laughs*”

Same here.I dont really care that much about fallout 3.Its the rant from the 3 of you thats funny. As well as setting paladins on fire.

  10. Josh R says:

I have never installed broken steel before hitting the level cap, so never really had a problem with all that. I also went with paralyzing palm, which is the reavers weakness.

  11. Daemian Lucifer says:

I love it how you manage to speech check computers. And that tesla cannon is just bland.I expected it to fire an arc of lighting or something like that.Like Someone said, its uninspired.

Also,it really would be fun to watch lets play of I wanna be the guy from someone who didnt sink months into the game and can beat it with eyes closed.Ive played the game sporadically for a month or so when I was bored, and Ive managed to beat two bosses before Ive had enough and stopped for good.It really is too hard.

  12. Nidokoenig says:

So, the Tesla cannon’s main plus is that it takes out vertibirds a little faster than Eugene? It’s not as if 5mm is rare, either, and miniguns are just scaled down anti-aircraft cannons, anyway(that’s why they’re mini). It’s great to watch a vertibird land, see the crew disembark and then kill the lot of them in a mushroom cloud using a handful of caps’ worth of ammunition.

    1. Someone says:

No, the main plus of the Tesla cannon is its precision and long range. Its basically a scaled up rocker launcher, which uses ubiquitous energy ammo instead of rare rockets.

      1. Nidokoenig says:

“Rare”? I picked up a modded rocket shotgun that used proportional amounts of ammo and even then I never had problems. Although, being an instant beam does have the advantage of letting you sneak crit, which slower projectiles and the minigun have trouble with. I only ever managed to sneak crit with miniguns in VATS. Reduced a a fair few Garys and raiders to iguana on a stick that way.

        1. acronix says:

You really can´t compare a rocket launcher with a modded rocket shotgun that doesn´t use the same type of ammo, I´m afraid (or does it? I don´t remember using that weapon, so feel free to correct me). Besides, (if I´m correct in my assumption that the shotgun uses shotgun ammo and not rockets) shotgun ammo is more common than misiles. Enemies tend to drop just 1 or 2 misiles once they are dead, whereas shotgunners tend to drop 4-8* shotgun shells. So, you are getting something like 4x times as much shotgun ammo than rocket ammo. However, rocketeers aren´t as common as shotgunner enemies, so you are actually getting even more shotgun ammo. And let´s not mention containers.
That´s why the tesla is “better” than a rocket launcher. Energy ammunition is more common than rockets (and cheaper, I think), since there´s a lot of enemies that use energy weapons compared to the ammount that use rockets.

*Aproximation based on my experience and memory.

          1. Someone says:

Yeah, I believe the Tesla Cannon uses Gatling Laser batteries, which you find by the truckload, for every rocket you come across there are about 30 or so charges. You only spend one measly charge for each shot, delivering bigger punch than a rocket, and with more precision and longer range than a minigun.

            1. Andy_Panthro says:

I was really hoping that the tesla cannon would be some sort of ghostbusters proton-pack inspired sort of thing.

You know, a big colourful mostly-controllable bolt of lightning.

Instead it’s just a better Gauss Rifle, which is dull (though effective).

          2. Nidokoenig says:

“I´m correct in my assumption that the shotgun uses shotgun ammo and not rockets”

Here’s where it all falls down. It was the Quattro from Ghoul Mansion, fires four rockets, uses up four rockets, spreads gibs so far you’ll have a hell of a job finding anything. Then again, I was an Unarmed specialist, guns were for when I got bored, so ammo problems were more or less non-existant.

    2. Jep jep says:

The ironic thing was it at least used to have this occasional bug where the script for one-shotting the vertibirds bugged out and you’d have to spend half a day shooting them anyway. This happened with my game, and so ended up with me shooting them down with the Metal Blaster since it was much more efficient than any other gun I was carrying at the moment.

  13. Johan says:

On the “you must always turn on the subway before using it” trope, Deus Ex let you use working subways, and is also a great candidate for a let’s play :D

  14. Michael says:

Been enjoying the titles these past few episodes.

We gonna keep up the streak, and name the last one after a song, too?

  15. Avilan says:

I think this is my favorite yet, just because seeing you guys talking about good aspects of the design.

Unfortunately you missed some of the good stuff, like the unexplained call for aid by the computer to the armed forces SEVENTEEN years ago (not 200), or the rather rational assumption by the computer that it’s sensors are faulty because the intruders have no body heat and radiates deadly doses of radiation…

    1. Sekundaari says:

I was hoping they’d check out the dead daredevil (just a small way down the tunnel at 4:05). To me, that’s about as hilarious as skeletons get.

Actually, you can kind of see his skeleton (torso) at 4:11, hanging from the lamp…

      1. Avilan says:

Yeah, I forgot to mention that one too.

  16. Seth Ghatch says:

What the hell is galaxian? Why couldn’t you do a game that people actually know exists? I would have prefered kotor or HL2. Anybody who agrees with me say I.

    1. wtrmute says:

Galaxian is a Space Invaders clone. I actually prefer Galaga, where you can have your ship captured and then, blowing up the capturing ship with your next life, get a twin-firing ship.

      YHBT. HAND.

      1. Chuck says:

So basically, him stating that was the game was a joke. Looks like we won’t know for at least a week when the new season is actually posted.

  17. Coffee says:

Of course, the new Engie weapon that allows them to control the turret manually eliminates the range restriction…

    1. Veloxyll says:

But they lose the ability to lock on for a few seconds. A few precious seconds when your sentry may turn around and shoot the spy who just broke the nearby sniper’s razorback.

      1. Coffee says:

I never play Spah so I hadn’t thought of that…

Wait a second, it was YOU sappin’ mah sentrah! Daaaaaamn youuuuuuuuu!

  18. Peter H. Coffin says:

Regarding this whole end zone thing not looking out of place? Yeah, it’s ANDREWS AIR FORCE BASE, right? And it’s dozens and dozens of 100-foot tall buildings clustered together? Go look at Google Maps of Andrews. It’s two massive runways running north and south, gargantuan expanses of concrete ramp (literally a MILE long), and airplane hangers. and no buildings taller than about 30 feet high that aren’t airplane hangers. The game one may look very cool, but why not label it a high-security research complex or something that might plausibly look like that?

    1. Roll-a-die says:

I hate to do this because it feels like I’m defending it, but, ALTERNATE UNIVERSE, changes may apply!

    2. PurePareidolia says:

No, it’s *Adams* Air force base. Similar, but probably not based on an actual location.

  19. Avilan says:

OOPS forgot the “Reply to” option. This is a reply to the post by Peter H. Coffin…

Same place, named for a different person. And all the high buildings are at one end of the airfield.

  20. Jokerman89 says:

When you twice start talking for over 3 mins about things not even videogame related i think its a decent time to move onto your next game.

Wernt you going to do a lot of the sidequests? Did you just get tired of the game then?

    1. Shamus says:

You answered your own question. We’ve said all there is to say about Fallout 3. We saw this coming a few weeks ago and began working towards the ending.

      1. tremor3258 says:

Still, you got, what thirteen hours out of Bethesda’s questionable design decisions? That’s a very fine run. I look forward to the next one eagerly.

      2. Jokerman89 says:

Wish Fable 2 had come out on pc….nitpicking that game would fill up the 30min episodes very easy. Good things to say about it too, its a love/hate kinda game.

also….i think i know how you will end fallout 3 haha…

        1. Andrew says:

          *cue ominous music*

  21. RTBones says:

Can’t believe I may be the first person to point this out – Shamus, you talked about how you liked the “Presidential Metro” design in Broken Steel. It is actually modeled after the Capital Subway System:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Capitol_subway_system

On the “plane on a stick” that you see when you emerge at the air force base, this is actually quite common in the real world. Air forces and naval air stations commonly put airplanes on sticks or pedestals as a way to honor a squadron’s (or aircraft’s) heritage.

  22. swimon says:

Tristan gave me a huge amount of nostalgia. His shoddy and strange voice acting is what fuelled the human guards in Morrowind (and one of the reasons as to why the ordinators were way cooler). He even said “keep moving” a few episodes back. It warmed my heart and gave me the urge to stab him (SHUT UP I WASN’T TALKING TO YOU I WAS JUST GOING PAST YOU IDIOT!!!).

    1. Sekundaari says:

Saying just “keep moving” is another reason why they’re not as cool as they-who-say-“Scum.”

      1. Someone says:

Well, there is also “STOP RIGHT THERE CRIMINAL SCUM!!!”.

  23. John Magnum says:

Have you guys been using Fellout? At least around Episode 19, I started noticing that the Wasteland is a LOT less monochrome green than I remember. I can’t really find anything that spells out exactly which mods this playthrough is using. Sorry if this has already been addressed.
