EDIT: Thanks for watching. We'll have the full stream up on YouTube some time in the next week. Until then, you can watch the VOD here.
Original Post:
We’re going to play festive holiday games like Crusader Kings where you take over the world and plot the death of your family. It’s all in good fun!

Bethesda NEVER Understood Fallout

Let's count up the ways in which Bethesda has misunderstood and misused the Fallout property.
Top 64 Videogames

Lists of 'best games ever' are dumb and annoying. But like a self-loathing hipster I made one anyway.
The Gradient of Plot Holes

Most stories have plot holes. The failure isn't that they exist, it's when you notice them while immersed in the story.
Resident Evil 4

Who is this imbecile and why is he wandering around Europe unsupervised?
Will this go up on Youtube later? So that people like me can watch it!
Yes.
*cough*
You can watch it now on twich, since all twich broadcasts are saved for some time. That’s how I watched the stream after it was over in the morning.
Twitch requires Flash, which a not insignificant number of people (myself included) have principled objections or technical issues (or both) with.
twitch dropped flash awhile ago they use HTML5 now
I thought it was still some weird hybrid thing they had for some weird reason, as someone thought that was a good idea.
You might be right on the VOD player, i honestly cant tell, i inspected it in chrome but i dont really know what im looking for
Huh. It seems it does use the Flash player. I disabled the flash player in Chrome and it wouldn’t play the video until I reenabled flash.
But I do think it might be some kind of a combination of tech since I can not left click on the video and get the usual Flash configuration menu.
The chat system is purely HTML5, and the video player is Flash. Or maybe it’s the other way around. They will eventually completely drop Flash; They just haven’t finished yet.
The actual video is broadcast using Flash (for both streaming and VODs) but the controls and chat are HTML5. I believe they have some kind of beta HTML5 video player that there are ways to force use but I’m not sure, otherwise I would be using them already.
Guh, missed it again. Cursed old man flesh can’t stay up past 1:30…
Why do you colonials insist upon celebrating the new year at that ungodly hour anyway? What’s wrong with celebrating it around midnight like all us regular people do? We give you people independence for just 200 years and it goes straight to your heads I tell you…
If it helps, I had my periodic (like, every few weeks) flash of “Oh yeah, the world has different time zones” yesterday when I saw a reddit post about New Years in Sydney, at 11AMish local time.
I catch myself running on the “it’s noon here so it’s noon everywhere” thought process a lot!
I regularly interact with europeans, even outside of twitter, and I have family that just moved to the west coast, so I’m usually pretty cognizant of time zones.
Unfortunately Josh is bad at showcasing awesomeness of CK2. I wouldn’t be surprised if after this stream less people would want to play this game ;-)
You are somewhat correct. He doesn’t really explain a lot what is going on. But than again he is being constantly heckled by Shamus and Jarenth so not talking much is a good idea.
I tried :(
But yeah, CK2 isn’t the best thing to watch when you have no idea, and spending forever explaining everything wouldn’t have been a good idea.
If the idea of a medieval feudal simulator is interesting to anyone, I encourage you to go find a Let’s Play or something to help you learn. I used a text one at lparchive.org but there’s plenty on youtube as well.
To be fair, the text one is probably incredibly out of date regarding a lot of stuff, owing to the half dozen plus DLC/expansions, but it should help with the basics.
I would recommend the text ones, especially the AARs from Paradox forums. I recomend the text because as we have seen the video is wasted on Paradox titles, and it’s much more important that you can clearly see the numbers than to see the gameplay in action, because let’s be frank, most of the time the gameplay will involve you looking at those tables of data. Where videos might help is with learning to find the option you want out of the gazilion other options you don’t want.
As for the Paradox forums, they are this gem where Paradox fans gather, and amongst them are also lovers of history, so you can find AMAZINGLY well written historical AARs. Theit writing section is the gem of the internet, and it used to be even more of a gem back in the day.
To be fair my favourite part of these streams in Jarenth and Shamus heckling Josh. It’s what the rest of them are there for be it streams or Spoiler Warning.
Hey, I tried to trick him into explaining stuff. Several times!
It’s just so much fun and so easy to heckle him instead.
Here, watch this:
Hey Josh!
Republic superweapons.
God damn it.
On the plus side it got me wanting to try out EU3, so there’s that. (I’ve never played a grand strategy game before, either.)
Kind of a confusing/disappointing stream overall. Shamus and Jarenth had nothing to contribute about the game itself (in fairness, it’s pretty hard to figure out CK2 just by watching), so the commentary was mostly “I don’t know what’s going on,” “I’m pretending to think this is a shooter! Iconoclasts are like a hipster faction!” on repeat.
On the bright side, I’ve got a new appreciation for why choosing a game for Spoiler Warning is so tough. A lot of great stuff just doesn’t translate to this format unless everyone’s already an expert.
Wow, I am REALLY quiet. Huh. I thought I figured that out pretty quickly. That was my first time using that mic so it wasn’t set up right. Sorry everybody!
Well, the existence of this stream, which I did not catch due to it starting at 5 am on the 1st of Jan, and have not yet watched, because the oldest twitch VoD seems to start somewhere in the middle, has finally forced me to install CK2. Now it might be less than an year until I watch some youtube videos or something, and start trying to play it.
