Okay, so… my appearance time on Desert Bus 5 has been moved twice and doesn’t appear on the guest list. DB is a really complex affair and I’m sure I just slipped through the cracks. The last time I was given was 7pm PST tonight, but that’s just an hour before Steve Butts, and guest appearances are usually several hours apart.
The point is, I’m not sure if / when I’ll appear on the show. I just wanted to give everyone a heads up. I’ll post an update if things get straightened out. In the meantime, go watch the stream! Lots of entertainment and fun. My minor scheduling hiccup notwithstanding., it’s a technical and logistical marvel those guys have put together.
EDIT: While still not listed on the guest page, I’m apparently slated for 7pm EST (midnight GMT) tonight. I’m just going to call in and hope for the best.
EDIT: Everything is sorted. It looks like I have some of you to thank for it. So… thanks. Now, go post some questions for me!
Tenpenny Tower
Bethesda felt the need to jam a morality system into Fallout 3, and they blew it. Good and evil make no sense and the moral compass points sideways.
The Truth About Piracy
What are publishers doing to fight piracy and why is it all wrong?
Deus Ex and The Treachery of Labels
Deus Ex Mankind Divided was a clumsy, tone-deaf allegory that thought it was clever, and it managed to annoy people of all political stripes.
Why I Hated Resident Evil 4
Ever wonder how seemingly sane people can hate popular games? It can happen!
Diablo III Retrospective
We were so upset by the server problems and real money auction that we overlooked just how terrible everything else is.
The world would be so much easier without this stupid timezone stuff.
Last year I managed to have the entire week off for desertbus, but I fear this time I’ll only be around for their early hours of the day.
Not to mention how this is going to cut into my Skyrim time.
Yeah, it’d be really nice if the sun somehow shined the same way at every spot of the Earth at the same time, isn’t it?
well yeah, but some jackass had to invent this “round earth” stuff in the middle ages. Things were that much easier before!
I think the jackass actually lived in ancient Greece. Curse you, Pythagoras!
Eratosthenes of Cyrene
EDIT: nvm he was the one who calculated the size of the earth my bad.
“According to Diogenes Laertius, “[ Pythagoras ] was the first [Greek] who called the earth round; though Theophrastus attributes this to Parmenides, and Zeno to Hesiod.”
Diogenes!? Isn’t he that homeless drunk I stole the golden statue for from the temple of Dibella in Marakath? I wouldn’t trust him…
/skyrim
How hard could it be to remember that the sun rises at 11 PM in your part of the world?
Better yet, why bother with days and hours at all? Just have everyone use the same global time, in seconds, from the start of the universe.
“So I’ll pick you up at 25,674,655,324,980.”
Sunrise varies too much to remember, and how many times a year does it end up at an even hour?
Except the yanks would want it to be based on their time, and not GMT.
I’ve even met some guys who didn’t even know what GMT was from there O.O Talk about international relations.
GMT+10 so I gotta watch it at 10am.
Dual Monitors – tomorrow they’ll let me Desertbus and Skyrim simultaneously. We’re living in the FUTURE ladies and gentlemen and other!
I may wish for a third so I can use the rest of the internet too >.>
Get a Sapphire FLEX card and you can have five monitors. It is almost as awesome as it sounds.
But… I only have 2 eyes. Where are my implants, science?
Where is our money for research, mortals?
-SCIENCE
While I actually run a dual monitors setup here, skyrim isn’t really a game I’D enjoy to play with only half my attention. If you aren’t going to pay attention to environment and quests, the games becomes pretty boring.
Well, when it happens hopefully you or someone else records it. Just would hate to miss it.
I think most of it is recorded and at least the more interesting stuff gets to youtube almost immediately.
Bah, you’ll probably end up at some hour that is completely ungodly for me here in Europe.
On that note, I was aware of the previous desert bus instances and found it a funny and noble effort but never really followed it. Now I kinda klicked on that link in the “wonder what’s actually going on there” kind of way. That was something like 5 hours ago and it’s been running constantly in the background while I’ve been doing other stuff. I mean, it was middle of the night there for most of that time, I assume it’s not even half as lively as it will get during the day. I can’t even watch yesterday’s SW but at the same time I can’t turn that stream off. I can’t even play Skyrim because I’d have to turn off a guy in a hoodie singing My Little Pony songs! What in blazes is wrong with me?!
Absolutely nothing. :3
I’ve been watching the stream and they just said 4 pm. Since all the other times are in Pacific Standard Time I assume that this is also. Which is GMT -8.
Yeah, I was just coming on here to mention that! :D I was the one who pestered them until it was answered. I feel sort of bad, but I really wanted to know!
4 PM PST would be an hour and a half between their last and next guests.
So I guess 7 PM EST?
Pacific is GMT-8. Eastern is GMT-5. So 7 PM EST would be it. Would also make it midnight for Great Britain.
That’s earlier than Rutskarn’s stream, I can live with that.
Quick skim: “I’m sure I just slipped through Steve Butts cracks.”
From the chat:
Kroze: MATT IS ON THE SHAMUS YOUNG SITUATION RIGHT NOW GUYS! THANKS FOR LETTING US KNOW!
I’ve looked about it seems that your on at midnight (london) so i’m waiting for that shamus.
6pm central, just had to be when I was helping with a theater production. Oh well, hopefully I’ll catch a recording somewhere.
YES! My questions were the first three you were asked!
‘Sup
1.)How’s the book?
2.)Enjoying Skyrim?
3.)MLP:FiM —- (on a note, you should watch it, there is actual qaulity in there. So look it up on Youtube. Also: Fluttershy IS the best)
_______________-
Puns V Batman, You choose Mumbles over rutskarn, for shame Ruts, you shall have to step up your game.
Tell us about your child hood. you should’ve linked them to the autobiography.
My question wasn’t asked, but I asked it too late. “What is your favorite Rutskarn pun.” Oh well.
Great interview, Shamus! You should get in there next year and drive the bus. XD
I enjoyed your call, Shamus. It was especially cool to hear those first few hints about the book. I’m looking forward to it!
YES! I will buy the HELL out of that book! That sounds AMAZING!
Eee! Glad my friend told me about it. Got to tune in just in time. And you answered my question! (I was the Dark Souls fangirl.) :D
Laughed at the whole “Batman or Pun?” question. I wonder just what that could ever be referring too?
Managed to tune in right when you were finishing answering questions.
Damn Skyrim making me forget about time…
In case anyone missed it, here is a recording of the driver cam while Shamus was on air:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A1IGyyh1T90
Awesome! Someone give that man a cookie.
Thanks for recording that. I was otherwise occupied when Shamus called in. I’m glad I was able to catch the interview anyway.
Rather annoyingly, I managed to completely miss it, despite having rushed to start watching for the earlier mentioned 2 EST.
Now that you’re world famous, you really need a better picture for these auditory only chat things.
No way. In fact, I make a motion that the fuzzy-headed bathrobe picture become Shamus’ new avatar on this site as well.
Seconded.
Thirded.
Also he looks like a genuine writer. Maybe not enough beard. And the hair looks too neat.
Don’t you hate it when your university won’t allow the live stream to play because of it’s stupid proxy checks to make sure you aren’t pirating things…
THIS IS FOR CHARITY YOU BASTARDS!!!
Bioshock 2 answer made me sad.
Why would you want Bioshock 2? Just rewatch the Bioshock playthrough, and add like three times the swearing and more bashing of the plot holes and you got the playthrough. Maybe some more puns. Yeah, lots more puns.
I totally wanted Shamus’s challange to be “How many puns can you make in 5 minutes, double points if you can make an Assassins Weed or another Spoiler Warning playthrough related pun”
AH bummer I missed it. Is there/will there be vid of it?
There’s a link from someone who recorded it a few posts up.
Ah, silly me for not reading the rest of the comments.
I was tied up when you were actually on so I just watched the YouTube of it. I have only one thing to say. Please, please, PLEASE don’t watch My Little Pony. You’re just about the only male I know not watching that cartoon. It’s, quite frankly, getting a little creepy how many late 30’s and early 40’s dudes are watching it. (And I say that with a lot of love since my own hubby is a brony.)
I haven’t watched any other part of desert bus, but from just Shamus’s section, I thought that guy was the worst interviewer ever. They know in advance who is going to be on the show, and they even have all the questions given to them. How hard can it be to put together a 20 minute interview with someone who has published so much about himself recently? They have a whole bunch of people sitting around in the background doing nothing.
Am I missing something?
It’s all done on the fly, the first three questions they asked shamus were submitted, by ME, like 5 mins before shamus called them AND that was about 18hrs or into there 5 day non-stop show. So it’s all improvised etc. The people in the back are mainly there to support them, emotionally and during the big sing-along stuff.
There was also the fact they nearly forgot :p Graham (the guy behind the computer) was about to have everyone sing the Red Dwarf intro when.. I-forgot-who reminded him that Shamus was calling in. Oops.
Can’t imagine how difficult it is to get all those call-ins, challenges and guest visits scheduled (as you can read above, Shamus was already rescheduled at least once), so honestly I’m not surprised they occasionally aren’t top-grade.
The questions are taken from viewer comments, starting approximately 1 hour before the interview.
People in the background are literally people in the background, as they’re mostly there to help ensure the person driving the bus doesn’t fall asleep. :p
Or they’ve already contributed and now they’re just hanging out.
Since one of the defining characteristics of RPGs is “numbers steadily increasing,” I’d say Desert Bus definitely counts as an RPG.
