My Zombie Plan, Part 1

A couple of weeks ago I asked people how they would survive the zombie apocalypse. Afterward I wanted to try my hand at post-zombie-apocalypse survival, but my answer ended up being too big for a comment. So now you get a 5,000 word post series of posts. Lucky you.

For the purposes of this exercise, I’ve sat down and tried to make this plan just based on what’s observed in The Walking Dead game. I’m not mining Wikipedia for answers or scouting locations using Google Earth. I’m assuming I’m being dropped into the Zompocalypse without any foreknowledge or preparation, aside from whatever trivia I’ve accumulated over the last 41 years of diligent breathing in and out. The only time I’ve gone to the web is to get reference links for the benefit of the reader.

I’m building my answer around the central question of “What would you do if you were leading a group in a Kirkman-esque zombie apocalypse?” In my case, this requires some hand-waving, because I’d likely die of asthma. Or if I lived, I’d have to be very careful to avoid strenuous activity, which would include basically everything that a post-technology society would need to do. I’d be a mouth to feed. And once we brought in animals for protection, labor, and food, I’d be dead for sure.

Fallout 3 EP10: More of the Same!

Thus continues our ongoing saga of self-abuse and childish griping in the face of Bethesda’s shoddy DLC. I highly recommend checking out this link before you watch the show. It will provide some much needed context on the mechanics being demonstrated. This goes double for Rutskarn, who was specifically asking about this stuff.

Pssst. That’s actually a link to the Sid the Science Kid movie which has mercilessly vexed Rutskarn during our last four shows. But don’t tell him! See, Rutskarn and I watch Josh play the game via Livestream, and at the time of this recording Livestream was showing Rutskarn the same ad again and again, every ten minutes.

What a cavalcade of bugs. Josh tried to shoot the enemy with his rocket launcher. Then the game switched to a close-up of the foe encased in a pure black spherical shadow and being shot with small arms from behind. As far as we can see, no rocket was fired. And when we came out of VATS the view was inexplicably pointed straight down. Having the player running around with no torso, giving us combat kill-cams of unrelated rocks, and the subsequent crash were just icing on the cake. I don’t even know how to count those. Are they all the same bug? Different bugs? What is this broken piece of software and why did people have to pay money for it?

Remember a few episodes ago we talked about a particular fallout shelter in the game? Well, I managed to stumble across it later on:

If you’re the sort of guy who has always dreamed of meeting a naked double amputee as she hails a cab and then spending a romantic evening in a coffin-size nuclear bomb shelter, then tell me your next two wishes, because the first one is granted! I like how the guy who set this up brought two glasses and got a “sexy” nightie (the pink pillow-shaped thing is actually sleepwear which acts as a nightgown if you’re a female or pajamas if you’re male) for his plastic date. He may be lonely to the point of being deranged, but he’s still clearly a hopeless romantic. Sadly, it looks like the mannequin got stood up (sorry) because the wine is unopened and the sleepwear hasn’t been put to use. Alas for unrequited love. The wasteland is full of such tragedies.

Experienced Points: Procedural Stories

Yes,! I’m writing Experienced Points again! This week’s column is on Procedural Stories. Perversely, the entire article is actually a response to a tweet:

At the time, I replied:

It’s a big topic, and like I said in the article, it’s either trivial or impossible, depending on your definition of story.

This is actually a very rare sort of question. One of the quirks with procedural stuff is that people don’t usually imagine other things that procedural development could do. They think of procedural stuff in terms of what it’s already done in the past, and new techniques for new content tend to take people by surprise.

Fallout 3 EP9: Operation Rancorage

And here is where the Fallout 3 season took a turn for the ugly. We decided to do a really bad DLC that wan’t fun to watch while we were under-leveled. The result is perhaps slightly deranged angry tirades that drag on for a long time.

I really do wonder how Bethesda came to the conclusion that it would be a good idea to build an entire DLC around their shooting mechanics. Previously, they’d been focused entirely on medieval-style melee combat of things like Morrowind and Oblivion. And even in those games, the combat was merely serviceable. Now they’re messing around with shooter mechanics and suddenly they think they’re Infinity Ward.

Buckle up. The next several episodes are going to be rough.

Fallout 3 EP8: Dead Cats and Other Treasures

Wow. I forgot how terrible the dialog was here. Camera-grab railroad conversations for sidequest characters. NPC’s that ignore your questions to stick to their script. Offering the player a list of 3 dumb things to say instead of the one obvious smart one.

Which is worse? The casual stupidity of Fallout 3’s railroading and conversations, or the vapid and un-engaging conversations in Skyrim? Is it better that Bethesda force-feed us stupidity, or that they make all the dialog bland and perfunctory? You know, my instinct is to say that given the choice between the two, I’d prefer Skyrim. Then again, I clocked at least twice as many hours in Fallout 3. So… I have no idea.

Look, all I want is a gigantic world, smart quests, limitless choice, detailed characters, and branching dialog. Is that too much to ask? It is?

That sucks.

The New Computer

As I said yesterday: I have a new computer. The death of the old computer was a hilarious disaster. I had a hard drive die, which caused me to switch to Linux for a while. Then once I got Linux and Windows working side-by-side, set up just the way I wanted them, the machine died again. This time it was either the motherboard or the CPU.

Because people have been good to me, I have a replacement machine. Some of you have expressed an interest in knowing what’s under the hood. So let’s talk about that.

Killing Floor: Post-Zombie Economics

By Shamus Posted Tuesday Jan 29, 2013

Happy Birthday to Spoiler Warning, which turns three years old this week. This is a good point to look back over the last three years of discussions, analysis, recording, editing, and all the other work we put into the show. We’ve come a long way and learned a great deal. We’ve released over 200 hours worth of show and played through ten different games, as well as covering a dozen more in specials and one-off episodes.

Looking back over this body of work I have to say: What a complete waste of time. Who would watch this drivel?

And speaking of time-wasting drivel, it’s time for your next dose…

Link (YouTube)

I don’t have much to say about Killing Floor. It wasn’t horrible or anything. (I grouched a bit while we recorded, but that was mostly due to the fact that I was getting sick and felt horrible.) In the beginning I said that Killing Floor was a Payday knockoff, which is a Left 4 Dead knockoff. That’s not really the case at all. I blame the fever.

Having played all three games, I can say they all come from the same general space of small-group co-op shooting against hordes of AI driven foes. Each one has a slightly different approach. In my experience, Payday is a grueling slog of a game where I’m usually asking, “Is this level over?” long before I’ve even reached the halfway point. Killing Floor is more mercifully paced, and the end-of-round shop adds a lot of variety to the experience. Then again, I have a soft spot for Payday’s dark humor and the extreme jackassery of the main characters.

But the biggest problem with all three games is that Rutskarn tells horrible puns while we’re playing and it completely ruins the experience. Honesty, I don’t know what the devs were thinking.

Anyway, there you go. Three years of Spoiler Warning. We’ll probably finish up Walking Dead next week. We’ve already chosen the game for next season, so don’t bother shouting suggestions at us. After The Walking Dead is over, we’re going to play something else.

Thanks for watching!
