In this episode we’re still talking about SimCity. We also discuss Thief, the Oculus Rift, and Lucasarts before we finally get around to answering some of your emails.

00:30 What’s everyone playing?

Josh is playing Crusader Kings II.

Chris is playing DLC Quest. But mostly he’s been working on the latest Errant Signal.

Rutskarn has just finished up BioShock Infinite.

Shamus is playing DLC Quest. Thomas was Alone, Kerbal Space Program, Battlefield Bad Company 2, and Euro Truck Simulator 2.

We brought up the Oculus Rift, which is worth reading about. This is the next big technology I’m eager to try. I know VR headsets have failed in the past, but this one seems to be solving those long-standing usability problems.

14:25 The horrible SimCity news of the week: The Nissan Leaf Charging station DLC. An advertisement, a broken cheat item, and another failure to simulate things.

23:30 Thi4f, or Thief 4, or Thief 2014, or whatever marketing is calling it this week.

41:40 Lucasarts is closed.

51:30 MAIL TIME!

We had many emails over the past few weeks, and now we’re finally answering a few.

EDIT: And here is the link to Rutskarn’s Let’s Play Morrowind Part 1

Experienced Points: Explaining BioShock Infinite

By Shamus Posted Tuesday Apr 9, 2013

MY column this week is a double-sized outline of the plot of BioShock: Infinite that will hopefully smooth out some of the confusion people are having.

I don’t have much else to say. I mean, I liked the game and all, but after an hour-long podcast and this article I’ve pretty much said everything I have to say on the game.

EDIT: And as soon as I posted this, I see that the new Errant Signal is out. I might be out of things to say, but Chris has another twenty minutes of thoughts.

Fallout 3 EP28: Revenge of the Spoiled

And so it ends. Not with a bang, with many bangs… followed by profanity, more complaining, a crescendo of plot holes, another bug, and a pointless death.

Really, I would have been disappointed if it had ended any other way.

Also, I plugged Rutskarn’s Clod of Cthulhu series. That’s still good and still worth a read. Warning: He wasn’t kidding when he said it was more nonsensical than Fallout 3.

Also, be sure to check out the final version of the official death-by-drinking-game spreadsheet. Heartfelt thanks to Deadfast, Traiden (Andrew), James and Jak for all their hard work and drink-counting.

AI, CPU Cycles, and Twitter

This post could also be titled, “Much Ado About Nothing”. It began as an ill-advised Twitter tirade, and turned into a confusing argument in which pretty much everyone was in misunderstood agreement. If the medium is the message, then the message of Twitter is that nobody has the time to communicate clearly.

The dispute is all settled down now, but it’s still nagging at me and so I want to put everything here as an official record of the foolishness. It begins with this preview of the upcoming Thief game, where we learn that:

As I learned straight from the developers that showed us the game, the artificial intelligence in Thief is something that is only possible on next-gen hardware. Whereas in past games, a soldier might react in an “if, then” manner – for example, if a glass breaks, then walk towards the sound – your enemies in Thief won’t be so predictable. Say you snuff out a lantern and attract the attention of a guard. At first, the enemy may simply mumble to himself that it must have been the wind, but should you do it again, the chances of the guard growing suspicious heightens. Do it a third time and he may launch an all-out sweep of the area, and each time is different.

Emphasis mine.

I sat down with Josh, Chris, and Jarenth and we discussed BioShock Infinite at length. It should go without saying, but just in case you’re intuition-impaired: This podcast will feature complete and total spoilers for all aspects of the game.

No timestamps for this one. The discussion is mostly freeform.

As promised, here is the screenshot I mentioned in the discussion:

This episode was recorded at the tail end of a long session that included a podcast. We were all pretty ragged by this point, which is why we were so quiet until everything went wrong.

Thinking more about the level-size problem:

Dishonored 11: The Boringest Guy Ever

We waste a bunch of time looking up a safe combination in this episode. It’s not bad, unless you know ahead of time that the code is 4-7-3. If you knew that, then it would be really frustrating to watch. My advice? It’s probably best to not know that the code is 4-7-3 when you watch it.

I looked. I couldn’t find the bridge dive video Chris mentioned.

EDIT: Here’s one!
