This has been bugging me for a couple of weeks now. There’s a person that comments at the Escapist who uses the image below as their avatar. The Escapist is pretty lenient when it comes to image sizes (this one is just shy of 500kb, while most forums I’ve been on seem to limit you to about 80k or so) and so there are a lot of really elaborate animations and some of them are genuinely amusing or interesting. This one caught my eye for some reason, and every time it shows up I find myself wondering where it’s from. This morning I thought…
Ah heck, I should look it up. Er. Actually, how do you look up something like this? It’s an image! Screw it, I’ll just crowd source it.
So… Movie? TV show? YouTube meme? Can anyone say where this is from?
EDIT: 1 hour, 31 minutes later, and we have a winner.
Nice work E.
The Best of 2019
I called 2019 "The Year of corporate Dystopia". Here is a list of the games I thought were interesting or worth talking about that year.
Free Radical
The product of fandom run unchecked, this novel began as a short story and grew into something of a cult hit.
This Game is Too Videogame-y
What's wrong with a game being "too videogameish"?
Silent Hill Turbo HD II
I was trying to make fun of how Silent Hill had lost its way but I ended up making fun of fighting games. Whatever.
Seven Springs
The true story of three strange days in 1989, when the last months of my adolescence ran out and the first few sparks of adulthood appeared.
That’s so weird – I’ve seen that and wondered about it too!
Jim
You could ask him. Funnily enough, I once asked a guy on the Escapist the same thing about his avatar because, as you say, how the hell would you search an image anyway? Of course, I don’t have a reputation to uphold as a net savvy commentator with his finger on the pulse of all things nerd. :p
You would normally search an image with TinEye.com. It works often enough, but I doubt it could do an animated GIF.
Actualy, it found that image on Escapist, but not anywhere else. Probably cos, that’s something that user made himself.
A reverse image search on tineye reveals that the image only shows up on the escapist forums and such.
That being said, it’s searching for images, not movies.
With the amount of lens flare, saturation and camera shake, it’s either J.J. Abrams’ gritty new re-immagining of Clerks or it’s what Clerks was, a student film.
Found it. It took a little while, but I found it.

E delivers.
The video itself doesn’t seem to make much sense.
That result was something like delving into your genealogy and finding out you’re descended from a long line of people who fix septic tanks.
Best. Comment. Ever
That’s no Conch, it’s the still beating heart of TV Tropes. Brightened up my day no end, hope the director makes more. They’ve got good timing.
Try watching the video with transcription turned on. 10x funnier. :D
Yep, the gags are in the subtitles. Niel Cicierega is random, but he also seems to expect his viewers to keep up with him.
I had to think about this for a while after seeing his name and it FINALLY just struck me: Isn’t he the one who created the insane “Hyakugojyuuichi!!!” clip with floating heads of Harry Potter way back in the dawn of time?
Actually, I just spent several minutes how to turn that transcription junk off – just inane blather that has nothing to do with anything. Of course one could probably say the same about the video itself…
Actually said inane blather does have a lot to do with what is said phonetically. We don’t notice because of context, expectations etc, but a lot of what people say sounds almost exactly like a nonsensical series of words. The words do match up to the sound, but not the meaning.
I thought the transcription was *part of the joke, but the way people are talking makes it sound like just a feature of youtube. If so, then the video is pointless and unfunny (to me), and youtube really needs to work on their speech-to-text.
*all of the joke, really.
How? I mean really, how did you find that E? Unless you already knew which it doesn’t sound like you did.
Really curious because I’m struggling to think how you would even start…
Huh, looks like a Beretta 92 they’re swapping.
And…it has a chopped off barrel, nor does it have a hammer, plus the slide is acting like the main spring has been removed, which I guess would all be a sufficient means as any of making it safe for a ‘point at other people’ scene.
Mighty silly looking to me though, considering I’ve got a working one (In need of a cleaning.) sitting seven feet away from me.
Anyway…
Good work E, the interwebs are strong with you.
Alternate hypothesis: it’s a plastic toy gun.
I severely doubt it.
It looks and behaves too much like the real thing in the video and why would a toy have the sort of modifications endemic to an actual disabled firearm?
I will admit to knowing nothing about firearms. It just sounds like plastic at times, particularly when Neil bites it and holds it in his mouth.
turn the volume up. the sound the guns make when they interact with anything are definitely the sounds of plastic.
The common 6mm airsoft design for the Beretta 92 has a nasty habit of breaking right where the barrel on that one ends. Combine that with the large print warning on the side, that appears on that same model of airsoft, and yeah, the chances of that being a live Beretta 92 are pretty slim.
Ahhh! I love Niel Cicierega. This is exactly the kind of randomness I’d expect from him. It also reminds me rather a lot of “Standoffish” http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dSY-90rwNgE
Why, it’s Neil Cicierega and Ryan Murphy, arguing about the pronunciation of the word “conch.” Pro tip, the bespectacled one, Neil, is the genius behind both “The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny” and “Potter Puppet Pals.”
In that case I hate him. Hate him with the white-hot burning passion of a thousand suns going super-nova. If I NEVER again hear another terribly wrong song from Potter Puppet Pals being sung by my early teens daughters, it will be too soon. Even worse is ferrying around a car-load of middle school girls all singing a rousing chorus of “Snape, Snape, Severus Snape” with assigned voices piping in bits like “Dumbledore!”
Heh, that episode got annoying the millionth time my cousins sang it. On the bright side, that’s the only one with a song that i remember.
I wondered that exact same thing many times. I don’t know why but that avatar causes me to laugh every time I see it. I just find it hilarious for some reason…
But yeah, its amazing.
Ha! My avatar!
I would tell you what it’s from, but somebody already has and now the link is in the OP.
Well, I’ve been meaning to tell you this for ages:
You’re a ninja.
Was that video made especially for Youtube’s subtitles?
“Hey their brother, liquid wife hound.”
o_O
OWN MY COD.
>> Diss hunky bitch hoe camper dicked five seconds.
In two.
The flute chair.
>> Owl a parent lean ate fat good happy dicked indy flute Charmouth a fuck a.
Why yes, I do want to see them do a remake where they replace the actual dialogue with the YouTube transcriptions.
I had the exact same experience with this gif, except that I’m not an internet celebrity so I couldn’t just post it.
http://img38.imageshack.us/img38/5543/2iiamc1.gif
I found it as someone’s signature on a forum, and I could not for the life of me locate it on the ‘net. My searches for “shocked long haired guy gif” were very unsuccessful. Took me about a year until my friend found it; turns out it’s from a hilarious 10-episode youtube series called Italian Spiderman.
Stupid, udderly stupid.
What do cows have to do with this?
Read the captions.
enable subtitles on the youtube video, its hilarious. COCK!
Crotch!
COCK!!!!!
BTW, for those who care, I’m pretty sure that they only had one conch shell & one gun when they filmed that. They shot it in such a way as to look like there were two of each, but they never share any screen time. Just an observation from a former film student.
