Not exactly geek culture, but my wife sent this out to a number of friends:
We have developed the study further and are now looking for state specific recipes to try. If you have a recipe from a specific state or know someone who does we would love to have it and if we can we will give it a try. Furthermore, any information about why that recipe is specific to that state would be a plus.
Example: A zucchini bread recipe and why zucchini bread is very popular in western PA. (zucchini grows too well in western PA which means that it finds its way into nearly every fall meal, what with everyone and their neighbor trying to give one free zucchini…in fact I still have some in my freezer. :))

(Yes, there are lots of recipe books out there with state specific recipes, we have one sitting right here. However, we think it would be fun to see what other people come up with. )

MMMMMM Tatertot casserole has to be one of the greatest foods my wife brought with her to the union. I have no idea if its state specific but I had never heard of it. My dad is from around here and my mom is from California. My father in law is from around here and mother in law is from Idaho (but has lived like everywhere). Probably not the healthiest thing ever but it is awesome to eat.

What about buckeyes from Ohio? I have no clue WHY they’re popular, but they are. I’m from Indiana, but most of my dad’s family is from Ohio, so that’s where all the family gatherings are. Somehow we always get saddled witht he desserts, and dice help us if the buckeyes don’t look like buckeyes.
I can’t say if it’s because of the football team, because I’m not sure if the chocolate-covered-peanut-butter-orbs that we make came first or if they followed the team. I just know they’re popular, and thought I’d bring them up.
In Kentucky, we have something called a ‘hot brown.’ Simple but hearty fare, and as tasty as the cook bothers to make it. Furthermore, it isn’t just a regional thing but is generally recognized as a ‘Kentucky dish,’ so I guess it’s pretty official.
