Digital Mumbles is a year old? How did this happen? Man, time flies. For the one-year birthday of her site, she did a forty-minute radio style segment where she spun some tunes (Is it still called spinning tunes if it’s digital? Is “spinning” now an old timey-time anachronism?) and answered some questions from readers. She also talked about her college years and how this music has connected with her. She also has a photograph of herself, if you’ve always wanted a face to go with the voice. Basically, this post is a must-see for fans of the Mumbling One.
I’ll also say that she has a shockingly good voice for radio. You can’t tell when she’s screaming insults and profanity at Josh over Vent, backed by gunfire and shrieking about bees, but it turns out this woman has a great voice.
For the record, I’d never heard a single song on her playlist. Song? Heck, even the bands were new to me.
Steam Summer Blues
This mess of dross, confusion, and terrible UI design is the storefront the big publishers couldn't beat? Amazing.
Could Have Been Great
Here are four games that could have been much better with just a little more work.
The Gameplay is the Story
Some advice to game developers on how to stop ruining good stories with bad cutscenes.
What is Vulkan?
What is this Vulkan stuff? A graphics engine? A game engine? A new flavor of breakfast cereal? And how is it supposed to make PC games better?
Overthinking Zombies
Let's ruin everyone's fun by listing all the ways in which zombies can't work, couldn't happen, and don't make sense.
Mumbles sounds almost like a completely different person (Ed: When not on Spoiler Warning.) She has a very good radio voice, I will agree! I would listen to that radio show even if I didn’t know any of the songs.
She looks and sounds too sober.
Damn, I’m gonna be honest, if you would’ve just given me that voice clip without telling me it was Mumbles, I wouldn’t have guessed it was her.
Awesome radio voice, though, I’d tune in.
B’aw thanks, man. I hope y’all like the music and junk.
I can’t wait to get to this. I’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t had the time to sit down and listen through it, but I can’t wait to find out what music I should have heard of.
Aren’t you more hipster than her?
He’s so hipster that he hasn’t even bothered to hear about these popular, mainstream bands. If more than four people know about the band, they’ve sold out
More than four people? That leaves out all bands with more than three members, since the fourth person to know them has to be him.
Laying aside all the hipster jokes, one of the things I really love about her blog is that she’s NEVER playing the game of one-upsmanship “I heard of this band before you did” thing that defines hipsters. She shares music not to show how cool she is, but to share some experience that she’s had. She shares it because it makes her happy, not because she wants to be cool.
Which is what makes her so cool.
The awesomest thing is that she said she is considering doing it on a regular basis, since many people have asked her.
I wonder if she’ll remember Shamus and company when she’s big enough to rival Rush Limbaugh.
“I’d like to thank all the little people I stepped on to get to where I am today…” :P
When you say “big enough to rival rush limbaugh”,do you mean metaphorically big?
*badum tish*
>> “do you mean metaphorically big?”
Yes, but I knew someone would make that joke if I phrased it that way. Congratulations on taking the bait. :P
Although… He actually dropped 80 pounds a couple of years ago. I’m not sure if he’s kept it off, though.
Spinning remains appropriate, until solid-state storage completely takes over from current magnetic technology.
Interesting aside: a few months ago I found that Target carries NEW vinyl record players, with turntables and everything. Of course these are modern versions that handle CDs as well, but I still never thought I’d see that sort of thing in stores again.
Considering that the sound quality of vinyl is by far superior to that of compact disc and even blu-ray, and the fact that there are more audiophiles than ever before (like me), I don’t see it going away anytime soon.
Gotta love ’em scratches. Adds soooooo much character.
:3
Eh, won’t let me edit..
Wanted to add, ‘audiophile’ is hardly a positive term. Remember that it implies the sort of people who buy gold/platinum plated digital cables at 1000$/meter “for the sound quality”… If anything, ‘audiophile’ is someone who’s lost the ability to actually hear sound against perceived benefits from spending extreme amounts of money on placebo / advertisement bait. Not saying you are that extreme, but, it’s always useful to keep this in mind before claiming yourself to be one of these.
Fair point, however, a lot of people don’t see the point in buying a soundcard & proper headsets, to them integrated s-card & 20$ cans are good enough…. Just that it’s a sliding spectrum of people, with the aforementioned at one end and audiophiles at the other end; and both ends are well into the ridiculous.
LOL, I always find it funny when people say things like this. Check out the signal to noise specs for a CD, vinyl doesn’t even come close.
That depends completely on the manufacturer’s quality control. Also Recycled Vinyl is by default inferior to “virgin” vinyl. Also also, 180g vinyl has superior wear resistance than the crap vinyls people put out in the 70s.
Its as simple as this, if there are any pops or scratches during playback, then your vinyl record was produced on the cheap, and most probably out of crappy recycled vinyl.
I have an original 1973 first pressing of Dark Side of the Moon (its actually my father’s) thats been well taken care of and an “Enhanced CD” version of the same. And yes, while the Enhanced CD version is something I can listen to more easily, there is no question to me which one is of better quality.
We still “dial” a telephone number, despite telephone dials going out of style more than 20 years ago.
7 minutes in and the lack of general swearing feels a bit weird. I’m digging the sounds and all but whow, it just feels like listening to whole another person. Nice voice indeed.
She cunted herself out during aunty paladin.
My God…I knew off hand two of those songs when she was introducing them…and currently had them…plus that Unicorns album…does that mean part of me is…is a…a h-h-h-hips-NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!
I look at that picture and see that mic and hear what she’s capable of sounding like and I wonder, “Why does she scream and clip the audio and make ears bleed on Spoiler Warning?” Then I think about what Josh is doing on the video stream and what Rutskarn is saying in her ear and think, “Oh yeah.”
Hm. I suspect it’s more than that. Perhaps she recorded this radiopodcast at work (since she works at radio, she’s got access to professional mics) instead of her home-computer-usb-headset.
Bah, what I want to know is when we’ll get more Chocolate Mumbles.
I’ve gotta say, while the music on Mumble’s blog normally isn’t my genre, I still listen through most of it and have a playlist on my mp3-player called “Digital Mumbles” – I don’t know, somehow Mumbles manages to get exactly the songs that I find nice, even if I normally don’t hear that kind of music. Also, that playlist works really, really well against Migraine.
So, thank you Mumbles!
Is it just me, or do Mumbles’ clothes look shopped?
Seriously, the coat(or whatever you call it) looks drawn and flat because of the lighting on it, and then, suddenly very spacial looking hands coming out of it.
But yeah, besides that, nice radio voice.
It’s just you.
http://xkcd.com/331/
Why in the world would she photoshop her clothes?
No reason.
It is with 100% certainty not shopped.
Just looks like it is because my eyes, they lie.
Thanks for the link, Shamus. I keep forgetting to drop by Mumbles’ blog — which is sort of ridiculous, because I listen to music a lot more often than I actually play games nowadays. I finally got around to adding her to my RSS feed this time out.
(BTW, please tease her about the “New Porno-graphers” pronunciation. It’s rather charmingly twee, but I can’t believe it was intentional. *grin*)
Oh trust me dude. My boyfriend won’t let me hear the end of it. No one has ever corrected me before, so I guess they all thought it was cute? IDK.
You were the cool music hipster, everyone probably just assumed you knew what you were talking about.
boyfriend? but..what about the shippers?
Who cares what Rutscarn thinks?
It’s a fantastic avenue for a music student like me to find some music and sound impressions I hadn’t heard before.
I hope this means I cannot be considered one of the “haters” who will end up being propelled to the moon.
Just as a question: Can I somehow listen to the radio station that Mumbles works for over the internet? Because honestly, listening through the Digital Mumbles Radio Show, I want to hear that kinda thing more often.
