{"id":747,"date":"2006-11-09T07:14:29","date_gmt":"2006-11-09T12:14:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=747"},"modified":"2008-08-16T09:51:17","modified_gmt":"2008-08-16T14:51:17","slug":"scope-and-scale","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=747","title":{"rendered":"Scope And Scale"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I wanted to link this a couple of days ago but it slipped my mind: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rampantgames.com\/blog\/\">Jay Barnson<\/a> has another great post up <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rampantgames.com\/blog\/2006\/11\/designing-computer-rpg-rule-system.html\">about role-playing games on the computer<\/a>.  Of particular interest is the bit about scope &#038; scale, and the contrast between Oblivion and Final Fantasy.  <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;m betting what most gamers want is a game with both huge scope <em>and<\/em> massive scale. I would add that I&#8217;d like this, <em>plus<\/em> dynamic content. I&#8217;m greedy that way.  (Actually, you could argue the Nethack has all of this, so let me add graphics and accessible gameplay to the wishlist.)  While we&#8217;re at it, let&#8217;s make sure the game has <a href=\"?p=221\">emergent self-balancing<\/a> properties too.  (This is as opposed to the %mechanical forced-balancing we see in Oblivion.)<\/p>\n<p>This is in no way easy to pull off, which is why we don&#8217;t see games like this very often.  (Heck, we don&#8217;t see RPG&#8217;s in general as often as I&#8217;d like.)  Still, this only fuels my interest in the subject.
