{"id":552,"date":"2006-08-11T11:22:40","date_gmt":"2006-08-11T16:22:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=552"},"modified":"2006-08-12T04:47:08","modified_gmt":"2006-08-12T09:47:08","slug":"profit-addiction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=552","title":{"rendered":"Profit Addiction"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As a follow up to my <a href=\"?p=514\">previous post about absurd uses of the word &#8220;addiction&#8221;<\/a>, I present the latest in a very long parade of frauds and goofs: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computeraddiction.com\/\">Computer Addiction Specialist Maressa Hecht Orzack, Ph.D.<\/a> I would suggest that in this metaphorical parade, she is <em>driving the biggest float<\/em>.  <\/p>\n<p>Is there an alternate usage of the word addiction that means, &#8220;Something people do which annoys me and I wish they would do less&#8221;?  Because that&#8217;s how the seems to be employed now.   A computer is a tool, one of the most versatile ever conceived. To suggest that its ubiquity is due to some sort of weakness or disorder and not because of the utility of the thing is madness.  Did nineteenth century people worry about &#8220;horse addiction&#8221;?  Did people in the last century talk about &#8220;car addiction&#8221;?
