{"id":1510,"date":"2008-02-06T08:00:23","date_gmt":"2008-02-06T13:00:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=1510"},"modified":"2008-02-06T16:47:31","modified_gmt":"2008-02-06T21:47:31","slug":"mom-dad-mom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/?p=1510","title":{"rendered":"Mom, Dad, Mom?"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Back in early October of last year, <a href=\"http:\/\/inscrutable.livejournal.com\/\">Shawn<\/a> and I had a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.feartheboot.com\/comic\/default.aspx?c=24\">Chainmail Bikini strip<\/a> where one of the players invented a characer who had three parents.<\/p>\n<p><table width='481'  cellpadding='0' cellspacing='0' border='0' align='center'><tr><td><a href='http:\/\/www.feartheboot.com\/comic\/default.aspx?c=24'><img src='https:\/\/www.shamusyoung.com\/twentysidedtale\/images\/threes_company.jpg' class='insetimage' width='481' alt='threes_company.jpg' title='threes_company.jpg'\/><\/a><\/td><\/tr><\/table><\/p>\n<p>The gist of the joke was that he wasn&#8217;t trying to make a character with three parents, he was just twisting the rules in a min-maxing, munchkinish attempt to make an absurdly powerful character.  He wanted the racial bonuses of three different races, so he listed his parents as belonging to three different races.   It seemed like a really ridiculous thing to try and do. I chose two mothers and one father to drive home the point that he really hadn&#8217;t thought things through.  Two moms and a dad seemed more nonsensical than having it the other way around.<\/p>\n<p>Then yesterday <a href=\"http:\/\/zaitcev.livejournal.com\/\">Pete Zaitcev<\/a> was nice enough to send along a link to this story: <a href=\"http:\/\/news.yahoo.com\/s\/nm\/20080205\/sc_nm\/embryo_parents_dc_1;_ylt=AuM_7V.eo_g_4WY1CdKvdAAE1vAI\">British scientists create three-parent embryo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Egads.  That&#8217;s going to make family gatherings somewhat awkward.
