How Do You Minecraft?

Most of this last week has been spent getting games and some accessories working on the new computer. OpenRGB is able to control the Asus TF120 fans and the Peerless Assassin 120 fans, as well as the Redragon gaming mouse. I’ve still got a weird incompatibility between Polychromatic and my Linux headers that keeps me from accessing the two Razer devices. But as I can’t do anything with the keyboard and gamepad but turn the lighting on or off, and I can do that manually; it’s not really an issue. I also installed a program to adjust the digital display on the Peerless Assassin. It won’t auto-load on reboot; apparently because of an incorrect pointer in a script that *can* be corrected…but you can also just restart the service after a reboot and accomplish the same thing. I moved the connection on the mechanical hard drive, which proved what I figured out was correct: the 5th and 6th SATA connections on the motherboard were disabled because I have two NVMe’s installed. I used the #4 connection and everything worked. Once that was corrected I used KDE Partition Manager to edit the mount points of all my drives so I didn’t have to manually re-mount everything after every reboot. That worked fine on the laptop the last several months, but with an additional two drives to mount and a willingness to connect programs to various external drives, auto-mounting is extremely useful.

Saying Goodbye To A Friend

By Ethan Rodgers Posted Saturday Feb 21, 2026

Around 6 or 7 years ago my wife (then girlfriend) and I moved into a small apartment in Baltimore so that she could finish school. Part of that move meant bringing along her orange cat, Helo, to live with us. Now, I had lived with her and Helo at her parents’ place prior to this but I didn’t get to spend much time around Helo because he spent most of his time around his grandpa and apparently didn’t feel the need to get to know me. But now he had no choice.

The first week after we brought him into the apartment he spent the entire day under the bed. He’d pop out at night when he thought nobody was watching to get food, water, and to use the litter box. As far as he was concerned he was bunkered down in enemy territory requisitioning supplies and using the easiest spot in the area to dig a latrine during gaps in the enemy’s nighttime surveillance. Slowly but surely, however, he started venturing out to scout out the place. I gave him space and let him become comfortable on his own time table, but I was really looking forward to finally winning him over and getting some affection from the guy. Eventually he popped up next to me on the couch and nuzzled into my arm while I was playing something on my PlayStation. So I paused my game and gave him as much affection as he would let me before he trotted off.

After a few weeks he was spending plenty of time lounging around me on the couch. Adjacent, but leaving some space. I really loved it. I felt pretty isolated in that apartment. I was alone most of the day while my girlfriend was in school. I couldn’t work or go to school myself. I didn’t have friends in the area. I needed his companionship. And whether he knew it or not, he was very good at being there when I needed him. But there was one barrier that kept keeping him from being truly comfortable with me. My mouth.

I, for lack of a better term, am obnoxiously loud. There are various factors as to why that is but the truth of it is that I have a very hard time controlling my volume. So moving into an apartment as a League of Legends and Rainbow Six Siege player was a dangerous prospect as it is. Luckily, the building we moved into had thick concrete walls and floors that seemed to be made of unobtanium. That didn’t make Helo any more comfortable. So when nighttime came around and I booted up whatever it was I wanted to yell at that night, he typically hid away. At least at first. Over time, likely because I was also all HE had, he grew to understand that I was loud, not dangerous. And with that he started joining me in my gaming sessions in a way.

If I was grinding solo queue in League or desperately, pathetically trying to improve my aim and flicking skills in Siege I had Helo in my lap to keep myself from blowing up as hard. I had a friend to vent to and cuddle up with when I get annihilated and feel helpless and furious. I could seethe and scream at the TV when dying to Sword Saint Isshin over and over for a week (true story) in Sekiro then turn to my buddy and pet him. It centered me. He was my little buddy. I was his dad.

Things have changed over the years. He had spent less time around me since we moved back to my hometown into a bigger home. Eventually he moved into our dear friends’ house because they were able to take care of him in his older age far better than we were able to, and we spend all our time over there anyway. Pretty much every time I went over to their place he would peak his head out and greet me or even walk over and demand attention. Nothing changed how much we loved each other.

Helo passed away yesterday. It was his time. He was old and he led a very good, happy life. Spoiled rotten every single day of it. Helo was my friend. He helped center me when I didn’t know how badly I needed it. He was an unwanted alarm clock at 4:30 every morning. He gave me immense love and affection in exchange for nothing but food, water, and latrine duty. He gave us fabulous excuses to buy new glasses and dishes when he obliterated them. He was the best. He was a bastard. He was our little man.

In lieu of the typical, “Sorry for your loss,” comments and whatnot please just hug your pets. I appreciate your care but those sentiments aren’t what I need right now. I just wanted to share a bit of my story with one of my best friends now that he’s moved on. So whether it’s a St. Bernard, a snake, or a fish, hug your pet. Don’t fight me on this. I demand it.

More Balders Gate 3.

Mostly running around doing random side quests, and stabbing cultists. We’ve finally been getting through a bit of the gold we’ve accumulated in the past two acts but not as much as I expected, it doesn’t help that we’ve been robbing every place we go, including a factory, a wizards tower, and a bank.

I have no idea how far through the third act we are, but I assume we’re at least half way through.

Also peen spending the past few days doing a puzzle, not exiting or anything, but it is a good puzzle.

How’s everyone else doing this week?

New Computer 2026

I *finally* was able to start building the new computer. In fact, I’m writing this up very late in the day on Sunday on the new machine. I started putting components on the motherboard Friday. The interesting part is nothing went wrong. The new computer even started up first try. So far there is one thing just absolutely not working, and I have no idea why. But it’s the original mechanical SATA drive so I’m not all that bothered. Its primary function was replaced by the 1TB NVMe I recently found. The single most time consuming part of the build was wire management. I had to redo a few things, and the case instructions for one particular part are not accurate or helpful. I didn’t capture video, but I did take several pictures, so I will upload them as I write.

This is a Kojima Glazing Post

Hideo Kojima has made lots of games and most of those games are absolute bangers. Metal Gear Solid 1 and 3 are seen as masterpieces by many. I personally love 2, 4, and 5 as well but their receptions were a bit more mixed. Regardless I think it’s safe to say that the Metal Gear franchise as a whole has a home in the heart of many gamers. At least those of us of a certain age.

One quick note I should make is that I haven’t played Snatcher or Policenauts. I’ve heard good things but I’m writing about the bigger more widely released titles.

More Balders Gate 3.

Finally after a few weeks of trying to get past act two, we’ve finally made it to act three. I’ve been way to busy to get into act three, but there are some highlights from this current run so far. Right after the last post, we were going through the Crèche, and apparently neither of us knew that if you mock Vlaakith too much she will kill everyone on the spot. So, we technically lost our run, but due to the fact that neither of us wanted to restart again, we force closed the game. If you close it normally or through the task manager, the game will save first regardless of what you do. But if you turn the power off on your computer, the game can’t save. It’s not ideal, but it seemed fair enough due to the circumstances.

We also had to restart the game another time, but not because of a party wipe out. Halsin died during the same big side quest as last week. Not that he got killed by any story choices or anything like that. We finished part of the quest where you fight off a bunch of enemies while protecting a portal, and to make it a bit easier on ourselves, we cast Spike Growth around the area. After the fight he apparently he decided the best path to leave the area was directly through the spikes, I don’t  know if we could’ve continued the quest without him, but it felt bad that he died like that. So we’ve loaded twice in honor mode, where you can’t load. I’m fine with it, but I’d like it if we don’t have to again.

How’s everyone else doing?

Something’s Coming, Something’s Here

Somehow I didn’t notice when I created the splash image above I named it “toiletsplash,” which isn’t great. I guess it depends on where your brain is at the moment. Right now, “toiletsplash” is something I *really* don’t want to be thinking about. I have eaten two things in the last 24 hours: leftover Church’s Chicken strips with Hellmann’s Real Mayonnaise in a tortilla, and the McDonald’s Hot Honey Sausage Egg & Cheese Biscuit. I’ve had the chicken strip wraps for a few meals because someone gave us the leftovers of a catered dinner. They were heated to piping hot every time. Sure that doesn’t fix *everything*, but as I said; they had not been a problem. So…I’m pretty sure the instigator is the Hot Honey Biscuit. I drove my Dad to church this morning and decided to try the new McDonald’s breakfast sandwich before I went back to take him home. (By the way, I’m writing a new intro and updating this post Sunday right before sending it in for upload, simply because I thought the toilet joke would be a bit humorous. That was before I continued to spend the next few hours running to the bathroom every 15-30 minutes and nearly screaming in pain.) Ate, dropped him off, said “have a nice day, love you” to my parents, and decided to change a setting in my car’s safety features when my stomach said “a race will be starting shortly. Better take your position.” That was a few hours ago. I write in between cramps.
