This comic is a little more autobiographical than the previous 162.
I’ll be posting my brief review of the game later today.
How I Plan To Rule This Dumb Industry
Here is how I'd conquer the game-publishing business. (Hint: NOT by copying EA, 2K, Activision, Take-Two, or Ubisoft.)
Wolfenstein II
This is a massive step down in story, gameplay, and art design when compared to the 2014 soft reboot. Yet critics rated this one much higher. What's going on here?
PC Gaming Golden Age
It's not a legend. It was real. There was a time before DLC. Before DRM. Before crappy ports. It was glorious.
The Dumbest Cutscene
This is it. This is the dumbest cutscene ever created for a AAA game. It's so bad it's simultaneously hilarious and painful. This is "The Room" of video game cutscenes.
Twelve Years
Even allegedly smart people can make life-changing blunders that seem very, very obvious in retrospect.
Shamus, you should add a Paypal link:
“Send supplies trough Paypal! It is automated to buy food and drinks to be delivered at by computer”
Edit: in retrospect, seeing your reaction to a game as simple as Luminee, I understand your reluctance to fire up Dwarf Fortress…
“getting thirsty” = total awesomeness!
I might have a little pity, but you got me started on Dwarf Fortress, and it is to Tetris as crack cocain is to dirt.
Edit: Heh – almost put a “first” in there, but Solka posted while I was writing… and he mentioned DF, too! And he’s right…
Nobody can best SolkaTruesilver’s Dwarf Fortress-mentioning-Fu
I remember when Zuma’s frog started talking to me and it was much scarier than the time I dreamed I was king Graham (when I was 12 YO).
By the way.
I am actually doing some work right now for a company called Lumines (they make lasers!!) and they are much less cute than this little fella.
Eh, this one was White-Dwarf, maybe Yellow-Dwarf level technique, Shamus. I am merely Brown-Dwarf Dwarf-artist.
You should see some Black-Dwarf techniques :S It is of Asspull proportion..
I’m sure Shamus understands that many in his audience would like for him to do some DF content. However, it would be a major investment of time with not necessarily much useful imagery to show for it.
I, for one, am wondering when he’ll do “Shamus Plays Zork III”
The worst thing is, this time, I wasn’t pressuring him to play DF. On the opposite, I was actually saying that his “no playing DF” was justified, seeing as how he reacts to a simple game. I can only phantom the life-disastrous event him starting up DF would be.
Okay, maybe not Life-disastrous. Maybe Blog-disastrous.
Shamus shouldn’t start Dwarf Fortress. He wouldn’t get anything else done then.
DF is addictive. And I’m talking about REAL addictive. *remembers the pain of deleting the game after two weeks because of the serious RL-effects*
Did the same thing used to happen with tetris as well? (I assume you played it at some point.), since looking at the two games there does seem to be a superficial similarity.
I’ve got DF on my computer, but I seem to only play it when finals week rolls around, which is detrimental to my health and grades. On the bright side, Plants versus Zombies is my current timesink, and I feel I’ll be returning to it many times; of course, woe be to he who delves into any popcap game unprepared.
Hmm. I don’t have any games which are specifically time-sinkerous a the moment. And given what I’ve heard about Dwarf Fortress (and other roguelikes for that matter) and the “lol losing is fun” attitude, that’s not likely to be one of them.
For that matter, most puzzle-games simply fail to hold my attention for some reason. Ah well …
