Welcome To the New Site

If you see this post, then you have joined me on the new webhost. Welcome. If you look around, you’ll notice everything is basically the same. That’s actually kind of disappointing, considering the work it took to get us here.

(If you’re curious, I went with 1And1 Hosting. Seems pretty fine so far. Good speed. The control panel makes sense, although it has some annoying upsell features I keep bumping into when looking for controls. I got the low-level access I wanted and I even managed to use the Linux shell without killing anyone. I’m so proud of myself.)

What’s really strange is that there are still people seeing the old site. They can’t see this. The old blog is still running, even though I can no longer get to it. I can’t moderate the comments or post updates back there. The people left behind are like the folks that end up trapped in ghostly Silent Hill: Inhabitants of a purgatorial realm that have no idea they’re trapped.

I’ve still got a bunch of fussy housekeeping to deal with. I’ve taken the Wolfenstein post and pushed it off until next week. I’m sorry this entire week has been nothing but boring maintenance announcements. If it makes you feel any better, you should be able to edit your comments again. I mean, there’s no content to talk about this week, but if there was just imagine the typos you could fix!

The forums should return soon. Let me know if you’re still missing any features / plugins.

UPDATE: I’m doing the domain transfer now. I thought this would be quick and painless, but aparently it can result in days(?!WTF!?) of downtime. Hopefully it goes quickly.

(I don’t know why I’m posting this, if the site goes down you won’t see it.)

UPDATE 2 DAYS LATER: I fully retract any endorsement I gave this host. If you signed up for their service based on my recommendation, I sincerely apologize. I’m monumentally unhappy with how they’re handling things. I’ll have a more complete rant up once I’m done fighting with them. I’m torn between dropping them and moving to a new host, or staying with them and hoping nothing else goes wrong. On one hand, I don’t want to move AGAIN because I can’t tolerate any more downtime. On the other hand, my account is only three days old and I’m already feeling angry and powerless. How much worse will they treat me once the “money back guarantee” period is over? So I dunno.

    I can see you :)

Is the anti-spam check box coming back?

And typo: ” I’m sory this entire week has been nothing …”

  2. KarmaTheAlligator says:

The old site doesn’t work for me anymore, had to google the new site.

Well, glad the move happened smoothly, it’s always nice when that happens.

  3. CruelCow says:

The new website doesn’t support HTTPS anymore

    1. TheAngryMongoose says:

Can confirm. This also means that every link from Google is broken right now.

      1. MarcoSnow says:

I can corroborate this as well. The only way I was able to find the new site was through a link on Shamus’ Twitter page. All of the links to Twenty-Sided Tale displayed in my search engine were broken, presumably because they’re all linked to the old site.

        1. Milo Christiansen says:

I just got hammered with a ton of RSS notifications. Seems my custom RSS reader doesn’t like the URL change (http://s720653790.onlinehome.us ???).

I hope this all gets sorted soon.

          1. Milo Christiansen says:

Oh, wait, another round of notifications, and the URL is back to normal.

          2. Shamus says:

Sorry about that. I flipped a couple of switches in the wrong order and made the site live before I told the database about it.

            Should all be sorted now.

    2. Deadfast says:

Can confirm. The HTTPS version doesn’t work (best I can tell it doesn’t actually supply a certificate) and the HTTP version 404s.

  4. afaulconbridge says:

“Silent Hill: Inhabitants” – there’s the title for number 8!

  5. Zekiel says:

    Yay! Well done!

My work uses 1and1. They seem to be pretty decent.

  6. MichaelG says:

Ooh! Did you get Basic, Unlimited Plus or Unlimited Pro?

      1. Kdansky says:

Really they all seem quite dirt cheap. $15 a month is definitely not serious money, and that’s the highest plan they offer right now.

Since I’m looking for cheap webspace, I’ll use that referral sometimes soon.

      2. Erik says:

I really hope 1and1 work well for you. Unfortunately, I have some cautionary input. I had asked for recommendations, then updated that when you made your decision for 1and1. Two people wrote back, and I’ll share their input for your reference.

Friend 1: “All was fine when I started with 1&1 c 6 years ago. Now I’ll switch hosts at the first real opportunity. IME 1&1 is slow, has service that lacks badly, and (minor though this may seem at the beginning) a really ugly user interface/version of cPanel.”

Friend 2 (referencing an online store belonging to friend 3): “Fair warning that 1&1 tanked the (store) website during a critical retail window with nothing recommendable about the experience.”

You may not have these experiences; my friend’s sites were almost certainly not at the Pro level. I’m not trying to scare you off your decision, just alerting you where to keep an eye out for issues in the future. Good luck!

        1. Heron says:

I used 1&1 a long time ago, and everything was fine until I had a nontrivial amount of traffic. (To be fair I was using their shared hosting service, not their VPSes or dedicated servers.) They also held my domains hostage as long as they could when I wanted to leave.

I have no idea if they’re any better now than they used to be, but I don’t really have any incentive to find out.

Apparently I mentioned this back in 2011, too:

          http://s720653790.onlinehome.us/twentysidedtale/?p=10427#comment-185075

          My original rant about it:
          http://www.danielgmyers.com/2009/03/01/avoid-11-internet-like-the-plague/

          1. Rick C says:

Years ago I hosted a website with a small forum on Site5 and was very happy with the speed. We had a relatively complex homegrown forum that ran great. Once I tried moving to another host, and it was much, much slower.

I don’t run the site myself any longer but as a user it still seems pretty fast, and I never had any problem getting a quick response when I needed support.

        2. Erik says:

Ooh, I am *so* sorry that my relayed warnings became relevant so fast. I really hadn’t expected it at all.

If you decide to pull the plug and these become relevant, the other recommendations I got from the two who were not happy with 1&1 were:

“Sitedistrict (https://sitedistrict.com/) – new, lean, WP-centric. Matt who runs it is a friend and gives great support. I’ve just started using the service and like it a lot.”
          and
” Does a company like Hurricane Electric (Fremont, CA) offer something like what your friend is looking for?”
in addition to an earlier recommendation for Digital Ocean.

          Good luck!

  7. Galad says:

What, I love boring maintenance announcements, I’ll even throw some patreon money at you again ;)

(I’ve been meaning to do that for a while)

  8. Sleeping Dragon says:

As the folks from marketing put it: It’s totally new and completely improved but still the same way you like it!

  9. Paul Spooner says:

Wooo! Glad you’ve completed the move and everything is working. I was kind of dreading reading a series of increasingly desperate descriptions of the disintegration of the underpinnings of internet infrastructure. So, dodged that bullet anyhow.

New host seems really fast! I’m impressed. I hadn’t noticed the half-second latency before, but the snappiness is refreshing.

  10. Pax says:

I’m seeing the new site at the usual address, so something must be going right at least.

  11. Phill says:

Woot! Welcome back to the Internet

  12. Tizzy says:

I can see this. On the day it was posted. So congrats on the move, I guess, and I hope everyone joins us soon. May the housekeeping be as painless as possible.

  13. mechaninja says:

I’ve used 1and1 (for clients) a couple times over the years and they’ve always been great. Good to know that they continue to be great.

  14. The Rocketeer says:

I’d been getting a weird, broken version of the site at the regular url (with the Site Move post most recent, not this one), right up until I followed the mirror to this version; I just checked the url one last time, and now I’m getting a regular ol’ 404.

    1. The Rocketeer says:

Now I’m getting a new, different broken version of the site at the regular url. Apparently still the old site, because the Site Move post is still the most recent.

    2. Bubble181 says:

Yesterday, I could see the new site on the regular address. Today, I get the 404 and have to follow the mirror here. Don’t ask me why.

      1. Erik says:

Same here. I was able to see the new site from links from the RSS feed but not the direct URL; when the URL switched to the new site, suddenly all I could get was the 404 page from either path. Coincident timing? Possible. Alien intervention? Probable.

I eventually found the mirror via Twitter. Still 404-ing as of 15:52 PST.

  15. Fade2Gray says:

The timing of this change was terrible. I just moved to a new state with a new ISP, and when I tried to load up the 20 Sided blog I nearly had a heart attack thanks to that 404 error. I thought my ISP was blocking you or you’d suddenly pulled the plug. I don’t think I could survive without my weekly did of rantings.

  16. Droid says:

I get a “shamusyoung.com has closed the connection unexpectedly”. Is that `what’s supposed to happen until the transfer completes?

EDIT: Edit just for the sake of editing. Yup. Very enjoyable.

Editing a post does take you to a new page, though, instead of being basically the same window as a reply.

  17. Redrock says:

I don’t think I like the new browser tab icon. I’ll admit that it’s much more readable, clear and modern, but every time I glance at my tabs I get the impression that I have 20 unread messages somewhere. I already feel guilty whenever I look at my Gmail checker icon, I don’t need extra anxiety in that department.

    1. Nimrandir says:

That anxiety is a big reason why I’ve logged into Facebook precisely once in the last month and a half. On some level, I find it amusing that these engagement drivers can actually have an adverse effect when they appear in quantity.

  18. AMX says:

Huh, this seems kind of weird – near as I can tell, the 404 error is served from the same IP that’s serving the content here.

It kinda looks like the DNS records are updated already, but the host itself doesn’t know that it’s hosting this site o.O

  19. Will says:

    Something’s definitely broken.

So here’s what I’m seeing, in as much detail as I’d want if I had the thankless task of fixing it.

shamusyoung.com and s720653790.onlinehome.us both resolve to 74.208.236.193 and 2607:f1c0:100f:f000::23a. My best guess is that both addresses are the same server.

If I attempt to pull down shamusyoung.com at either IP address, or either address directly, I get a generic nginx 404 page. When I pull down s720653790.onlinehome.us, I get the expected front page of Twenty Sided, regardless of which address I force it to. Neither address correctly speaks HTTPS. (I haven’t really dug into that, but I speculate they’re speaking HTTP on port 443.)

My best guess is that AMX is right: the server doesn’t know that shamusyoung.com is supposed to be your site, similarly to if somebody went and registered masseffectrants.net and redirected it to 1&1’s server without ever setting up an account with them. The server doesn’t know which of the many sites it hosts that one is supposed to be, so it shrugs and hands out a 404.

    1. Ultrapotassium says:

Hmm. You use technical words, seem to have done original research, and sound confident. Most believable explanation I’ve seen so far.

  20. Ciennas says:

Can concur. I can’t find your site, regardless of connection or machine used, unless I click your tweet address.

It’s not a problem on my end- flushed the cache and still get 404’d.

    1. Ciennas says:

What the heck happened to my avatar?

      1. Dreadjaws says:

Good question, because I see you have two, and I don’t know which one (if any) is the original.

      2. Bubble181 says:

Since the avatar is based on your e-mail address, you probably made a typo or used a different one than normal.

  21. Dreadjaws says:

Taking a look at some old posts in the website (such as this one), some of them seem to be a bit broken.

Notice in the link, for instance how that “you’re” shows up as “you're”, and stuff that used to be quotes is now floating around as normal text. Granted, it’s only happening for some articles, not all of them, so I don’t know if it has something to do with the site migration or it was something else that had already happened before the moving.

    1. Shamus says:

Thanks! I noticed a similar oddity yesterday, but I didn’t realize how extensive the problem was. In my year-end posts, “Dénouement” was replaced with Dénouement.

Evidently I bungled character encoding somewhere along the way. Unfortunate.

If anyone else notices examples of this, please let me know. Once I have a few (I’m sure these aren’t the only problems) I’ll do a global find & replace on the dB.

      1. Shamus says:

        Even more interesting:

I took the live dB – the one powering the site you’re reading now – and copied it to the mySQL dB I have on my Windows machine. This reversed the process and FIXED all the text. That’s a much better solution than going through the entire site and trying to track down every case of mangled characters.

So now the questions is, can I go from my Windows machine to the server WITHOUT screwing up the encoding? There’s probably some combination of conversion options that will do this. I just need to find it.

        1. Shamus says:

I have no idea. I’ve been at this for two and a half hours now. It works locally, it’s broken on the server, and I can’t fix the server version. It doesn’t help that export takes several minutes, then download takes several minutes, then it takes some time to load and mess with the file, then the upload takes bloody ages and the re-import takes several minutes. I’m done with this stupidity for now.

        2. Shamus says:

Now I’m doing it the hard way. The accented e symbol should be fixed, as should the errant apostrophe symbols. Let me know if you find any more.

          1. Jason says:

I’m still seeing it in comments. I don’t know how much you care. Here’s an example on Borderlands part 5: http://s720653790.onlinehome.us/twentysidedtale/?p=37858#comment-1115388

They're trying to deliver on the core loop of incremental upgrade, you don't

          2. A Person says:

This post (from the reposted WoW series) is still badly broken…
http://shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=34172 (See the part right after Norman summons Gobstab for the first time).

Interestingly, other post I spot checked in the same series are NOT broken so ¯_(?)_/¯

Edit: Also, the “shrug emoji” is broken, apparently, which makes me want to flip tables… (?°?°??? ???

            Second edit: :(

            1. Shamus says:

Thanks for this. A bunch of special characters got turned into garbage like this. I’ve fixed several, but I’d appreciate it if people could let me know if they find more.

              1. Daemian Lucifer says:

The grave accent* is….acting weird for me.It goes to the end of the sentence, and trying to type anything else after using it just gives me some accented lettering(`e`x`a`m`p`l`e).Which really made a sentence weird after I copied it from the rollover text.It wasnt acting like this before, nor is it the case on other sites for me.

                *Im talking about this thing:

                `

          3. Mephane says:

FYI, this looks very strikingly like UTF-8 wrongly interpreted as legacy codepage 1252. Some Microsoft products are still notorious for doing that in certain conditions if you are not careful (e.g. even in Windows 7, if you had a UTF-8 encoded zip file, the zip tool included in Windows would show the names of files inside like that).

Also curious is that it affected the apostrophe, which is normally an ASCII character and thus shared at the same code point in UTF-8 and 1252 (most, if not all, character encodings include ASCII as a subset). Must have had some alternative, typographical single quote there. Which looks like a typical symptom of writing text in Word, because that is notorious for replacing apostrophes and quotation marks (which are also regular ASCII) with some fancier, non-ASCII ones.

      2. Daimbert says:

I re-read the Mass Effect series right before the changeover, and it occurred in a number of places in them. I can’t remember which ones, but it was quite a few of them, both in the posts and in the comments.

EDIT: Never mind, since you found a generic fix for it.

  22. DanMan says:

One thing I don’t see (don’t exactly remember if it was on the old site) is a link to your Patreon or Paypal. I could be completely blind, but I thought if you’ve got a few days :( of downtime, income might suffer and I’d love to throw in a few bucks to help cover the outage.

I know how much moving services sucks. And how predatory and arbitrary some of these hosts can be.

Edit: I’m an idiot. I was looking in the navigation space when it is clearly right at the end of your post.

  23. Retsam says:

It looks like the comment section is broken, which is going to make it hard for people to give feedback. When I load the page, there’s no “Leave a Reply” section. (I had to do some HTML hackery to leave this comment)

    1. Retsam says:

Nevermind; failed my HTML hackery and ended up posting here instead.

  25. ElementalAlchemist says:

1and1 is the absolute pits. I don’t know who suggested you use them, but I’d certainly never take their advice ever again.

Also, why are you transferring your domain to them? You should be hosting your domain with an independent registrar. There is no need to tie it to whatever your hosting solution is. You’re really in a hole of your own digging as far as that part of it goes.

    1. Shamus says:

“You’re really in a hole of your own digging as far as that part of it goes.”

I know, right? What was I thinking, taking advice from friends and trying to keep the billing organized and simple? I should have taken advice from internet randos that will sneer at me for not being clairvoyant.

The truth is, I never had a problem keeping my domain with my host before. I wasn’t aware this was something unwise. And as a matter of fact, it shouldn’t be.

And even if it WAS a mistake, maybe while I’m frustrated, restless, and pissed off isn’t the best time to swagger in here with a “you had this coming”.

      1. Shamus says:

Later, after a nap: Sorry for getting testy. Obviously this ordeal has put me in a bad mood.

        1. Shamus –

What ElementalAlchemist said was unkind and unnecessary.

They should be apologizing to YOU.

Also, I nudged my husband (MPR) into writing to you about AWS. I’m sure he would be happy to help you further if you are interested. Making big websites run for big companies is his day job. :-)

        2. ElementalAlchemist says:

Nothing to apologise for. I dealt with 1and1 myself in the past, I know exactly how enraging it is. They wouldn’t let me cancel my account. That was fun. They were the last managed host I ever used. The domain thing wasn’t meant as an attack, more a head-scratching “why would you do that?”, but I forgot to dial back my innate assholishness. Sorry for piling on in the middle of a trying ordeal.

If you want my 2c, take the pain now and do it right so you hopefully don’t have to do it all again in another six months. Tell 1and1 to shove it, go somewhere else. Move the domain to a 3rd party and then you can hopefully you never have to deal with aspect again at least, you can just point it to whatever host you are using at the time. It will suck for everyone for the next week or so, but it will be for the best in the long run.

  26. MPR says:

Hey Shamus, sorry to hear of your troubles.
Have you considered hosting in AWS? It would require more hands-on attention, but you would have near absolute control of the site and a high confidence in the platform.
The Registrar/DNS service (Route53) is top-notch. I recommend using that even if hosting elsewhere. Free HTTPS certificates with AWS hosts, nice perk.
Though I don’t know how the cost compares to your current options, but worth considering perhaps. You can try a free tier (“micro”) option:
    https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/tutorials/launch-a-wordpress-website/
Of course, that setup would require significant upgrades to handle your traffic.
Just throwing it out there, ignore me if you have not the time or interest in learning to DevOps. :)

    1. skeeto says:

I second this. Or, more specifically, I second using one of the major VPS providers. You’ll get much better service and a better real value compared to any of that cheap shared hosting crap. It’s less hand-holding, but that’s ultimately a good thing if you’re willing to spend a little time learning how to admin a server. It’s pretty easy these days.

My own story: DigitalOcean has hosted my mail/XMPP server for the past 5 years, and they’re top notch. If there’s even a few seconds (literally) of downtime needed for maintenance, they’ll send me an email warning about it way ahead of time. They give me a virtual server with a unique IP and I handle the rest (operating system, software, etc.), which is exactly how I want it.

If I were to host this blog, I’d spin up new Debian server, then install WordPress and MySQL via apt. Going through the official repositories for everything means Debian maintains all the security updates for you, effectively outsourcing that work for free. Once it’s all set up, it’s basically hands-free except every few years when it comes time to upgrade to the next major Debian release (which you need to do because the security updates will stop).

It’s already been mentioned elsewhere, but I’ll repeat it: Keep DNS and hosting separate. It’s one of those situations where you don’t want all your eggs in one basket. I don’t have any recommendations for DNS registars, though, since they all suck one way or another.

      1. Rick C says:

I mentioned above using Site5 for hosting and being happy with them. I don’t think my site had the traffic of Shamus’, but we had dozens of users.

I used separate DNS as well, with DirectNIC. I was always happy with them.

      2. Richard says:

        Even upgrading Debian is pain-free.

I’ve done that twice to the VMs I maintain, and was really surprised at how simple it was.

And unlike with Windows, the in-place upgrade actually works.

PS: At the time of posting shamusyoung.com is serving a 404 from nginx for HTTP, and is refusing HTTPS connections.

The DNS records are pointing to the new server.

This definitely feels like 1And1 have screwed up.

Can confirm about the Debian stable upgrade process as I’ve used it on my personal gaming desktop from April 2016 to October 2017, when I changed to testing instead. When they say stable, they mean stable.

    Hey Shamus,

Man, I’m really sorry to hear about all this crap. I hope you get it sorted out soon!

      “P.S. I look forward to the inevitable 3 week diatribe/breakdown ;)”
Yah, I feel a little guilty, but one of my first reactions was “Well, this should make for a fun read…”
Sorry for your misery, Shamus, but on the bright side, you’re getting lots of material.
(and if 1And1 was even remotely competent, they’d recognize that pissing off a tech blogger is not a great stunt for a host to pull – both the server admins I know read your blog)

    Hey Shamus,

Is it worth to buy the twentysidedtale.com domain and use it as backup site?
Maybe it can even help with the domain change some years from now…

By the way, I’ve sent you some dolars to help through these troubled times. I hope some others long time readers do the same.
    Good luck!

PS.: sorry for my bad english.

    1. MichaelGC says:

Your English would put many native English speakers to shame! ??

      1. MichaelGC says:

I guess this site isn’t doing emojis! :0) So, the ‘??’ was a smiling face and a thumbs up.

        1. Echo Tango says:

Isn’t it great that we’ve had so many decades of non-standardized text encoding, that even now we can’t assume everything will just work, or just be the same encoding? UTF-8 is pretty much the universal standard, even though theres some things that are still fiddly.[1] Maybe a few more decades will solve this. :)

[1] I’m still astonished that there’s no open source library(ies) for dealing with whole groups of specific characters, and that you have to do it by hand. For example, disallowing all control characters, so people can’t break your site’s layout or do fishy security hacks that look normal (right-to-left and left-to-right override, I’m looking at you…). Or disallowing non-Language-X characters, because it’s a teaching site for young kids, and you want them to only use that language. Every time I randomly come back to unicode after months and google for this, this appears to be a non-solved problem. Maybe I’m searching with the wrong terms, but it shouldn’t be hard to find either. :S

I’m sorry you’re having so much trouble but glad that at least the site isn’t dead. Good luck.

    1. MichaelGC says:

Aye, I’d second all this. ??

      1. MichaelGC says:

        And here ‘??’ another thumbs-up and a four-leaf clover.

I’m actually pretty astonished that finding a hosting company is such an ordeal. It’s been at least twenty[1] years since the internet / home computers were ownable by the average home. At least the last decade has had hosting companies advertising that I’m aware of, and I was never actively looking to hose my own website. I’d have thought that by now there would be a few clear winners, with everyone else aspiring to catch up in features, service quality, and priciing.

CGP Grey hosts his podcast site with Squarespace and endorses it, but I don’t know if he’s only using the plug-and-play stuff, or if he’s doing the same level of software admin that Shamus would need. I see on the previous post Shamus, that you don’t want the “site builder” hosting they offer, but were you aware that they offered more low-level hosting options? Or is it not low-level enough?

[1] Around this much. My memory is fuzzy, and I know my dad was fairly tech literate and willing to experiment. However, I recall having my own home computer (and my brother too) around twenty years ago, for Xmas presents. Other kids in school were not far behind.

+1. Also as of a side-note, i am really glad that i recieved that patreon message with the temp url. Because i knew that the site is going to move, but was expecting maybe a few hours of downtime, but it seems that this is quite a long story. Really hope everything settles up soon!

I don’t know if this is too late or not useful, but I’ve been using digitalocean for a few years now, and they’ve been pretty good.

They may not be what you want (I have bare bones Linux VPS) but it can’t hurt to point.

  32. Isaac says:

    Hey, it works

    1. Ratatoskz says:

Works from the normal URL rather than the mirror for me as well.

  33. Mintskittle says:

Just posting to note that I am only now seeing the new sight, and have gotten nothing but 404s and connection failed since the old site went down. Also, the twitter feed for the site seems to be missing. Still, happy to have finally stumbled my way over.

  34. Sean says:

On one hand, I don’t want to move AGAIN because I can’t tolerate any more downtime. On the other hand, my account is only three days old and I’m already feeling angry and powerless. How much worse will they treat me once the “money back guarantee” period is over? So I dunno.

I recommend you switch hosts. You don’t want to be saddled with something not to your liking. It’s always better to switch earlier than later.
