Man, we’ve been doing this show for four years. And over those four years we’ve gotten progressively better. At being insane.

As evidenced in this video.

Don’t ask about the title. It’s better that way.

Also, Rutskarn says that if guys are good in the comments, he might drop by with some puns. He told me to put this in the post because he also told me to write the post instead of doing it himself like we originally agreed upon.

Bad Rutskarn. No biscuit.

  1. Artur CalDazar says:

I can’t tell if that supposed to be an incentive or not, but it is an incentive, unquestionably so.

  2. Rutskarn says:

I was a little busy NOT writing the intro for the episode, JOOOSSSSHHHH

    1. Jon Wood says:

I…I read it in your voice. What is this sorcery?

  3. TimothyXL says:

Oh, is Rutskarn going to keep order in the comments? That’s a pig task for such a small man.

    1. Warrax says:

…butt I think he can hamble it.

      1. guy says:

He certainly did a swine job in the episode.

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Thats the best youve got?Man,those puns are boaring.

          1. Warrax says:

I’m bacon you to come up with better.

            1. HiEv says:

I think the fact that we’re beginning to run out of puns is a porcine of how much we appreciated this episode.

              1. Warrax says:

We’ll just keep hocking them at the wall to see what sticks.

Don’t squeal from other people though, keep them original.

              2. Sleeping Dragon says:

S’nout about the number of puns but about their quality (or lack thereof I guess).

  4. Peter says:

That was simultaneously the worst and best episode of spoiler warning i have ever watched.

    1. Rutskarn says:

I think all of us half agree with you.

      1. Josh says:

        Some of the time.

  5. Warrax says:

“Pork Butt” is actually the shoulder BTW. I… don’t know why. It’s tasty when barbecued though.

I think the actual pig’s butt is called the rump. I think. It’s not really important, I guess.

    1. Peter H. Coffin says:

Maybe same reasons that rifles and shotguns have butts? For pork, it’s in opposition to the “shank” end, which is down near the piggy-elbow.

  6. HiEv says:

A swine ass is a fine ass at Mumble’s Big Ass Pig Ass Emporium!

Good episode, guys and gal. :-D

  7. Ithilanor says:

Sweet, more Spoiler Warning insanity to keep us amused. I assume a new season’s on hold until you can find a new streaming host to use?

  8. Ofermod says:

What even *happened* during this episode?

And where can I get more of it?

    1. Chris says:

      Really, two things happened:

      1. It was an anniversary episode, so we were encouraged to be more off the wall than usual. Worse, this is a game that none of us had beaten. Josh had only played the first ~45 minutes of it, Rutskarn had played the first ~10 minutes of it, and Shamus/Mumbles/myself went in completely blind. So analytical stuff was way down on our list of priorities, and joking around and talking about the exact important parts of pig butts was way up on that list instead.

      2. This will likely be the last episode we record using Twitch.tv. As Shamus said in the video, Twitch.tv switched to a new back-end system in late December, presumably to handle the increased load from both the PS4/XBone traffic but also to handle the increased popularity of e-sports and streaming in general. The net result was that latency was literally in excess of 45 seconds. We always have had lag in the show; you can hear it whenever Josh starts laughing or swearing at something on screen but it takes us 5-10 seconds to react. But at 45 seconds conversations about what Josh is doing are basically impossible, so in this episode Josh is talking about what he’s seeing and doing and the rest of us are talking about absolutely whatever we want because Josh is in some strange far-flung future.

      1. Aldowyn says:

for the record, that exact issue is probably going to delay Disclosure Alert further as well (not that it wouldn’t be anyway, I’ve had some issues).

        1. Aldowyn says:

oops. Mistyped my email, so my avatar was different. (in case anyone was wondering)

        2. Daemian Lucifer says:

Wait, you mean you guys havent recorded all the stuff yet and the delay is not just in the editing stuff department? What have you been spending your time on?!

      2. Okay, so here’s the idea for your Lovecraftian video game story: Slowly, you start to realize that everyone else is seeing gameplay that’s completely different from yours. Then, the corridor “Josh” is running down looks remarkably familiar, perhaps one you walk through every day to get to your car…

      3. bucaneer says:

Have you found a suitable replacement for Twitch yet? I don’t think you need a full-blown broadcast service like that for Spoiler Warning – a local RTMP server program running of Josh’s machine or Shamus’ server or wherever would suffice. A decent home internet connection should be able to handle the upload of a video stream to four-ish hosts. Unfortunately, RTMP servers that can run on Windows tend to be part of big and expensive professional suites. There’s a Linux-only solution, crtmpserver, that is free, super-lightweight (uses a couple MB of RAM and doesn’t even show up in CPU usage list on my PC) and comes fully preconfigured.

Assuming you can manage to find a Linux box to run crtmpserver (is this site hosted on a Linux server?), the setup is very simple:
        1. grab the binaries from the downloads page and put them on the server;
        2. run the run_flvplayback.sh script;
        3. point whatever Josh currently uses for Twitch streaming (OpenBroadcaster?) to the new destination: rtmp://[server_ip]/flvplayback/livestream;
        4. embed a simple RTMP player in a web page that the hosts can see (replace “localhost” with the server IP/URL in the embedding code);
        5. warn spoilers.

        1. bucaneer says:

NOT-EDIT: the stream destination in step 3 should actually be rtmp://[server_ip]:1935/flvplayback/livestream – the port is important. No port in the embed URL though.

      4. Dave B. says:

Well, if you can’t find a low-latency streaming service, you (or Josh, actually) might want to look into Bittorrent Live. It’s in beta now and I haven’t tried it, but I’ve seen promises of “a few seconds” of latency.

      5. Coarsan says:

I imagine you guys already have something in mind to replace Twitch, but I know another person whose videos I watch started recording with his guests on Hitbox.tv specifically to get around the large lag times that Twitch has now. Still early days for the service and the text chat is known to glitch out, but that’s hardly necessary for recording SW.

  9. Mersadeon says:

Oh my god, Rutskarn german singing was the best thing for me. Also, kudos to you, Ruts – that was EXTREMELY good. I mean, most people trying to speak or sing german have such an extreme accent as to make it almost impossible to understand, but that was really good. Also, that song is great. Especially my respect goes out for being so good at the “ch” sound – it’s not quite the right sound, but so much closer than even the “ch” of some people that have been here forever.

I just wish you would have yelled “Arschloch” a bit louder.

    1. SoWaitRutskarnSpeaksGerman? says:

      1. What song is he singing/saying?

      2. So Rutskarn, how much do you know of German, and what led to that knowledge of the language? Family? Personal interest?

      1. Rili says:

Die à„rzte – Schrei nach Liebe

According to legend the song is “Die à„rzte”s answer to complaints from the german punk rock scene that they never made their position regarding skinheads and nazism quite clear.

      2. Rutskarn says:

Two years study in college. I had a language requirement to fulfill, I’d already learned Spanish, and German seemed like the most interesting option.

Make no mistake, my German is rusty, halting, grammatically borked, and clearly nonfluent. But I’m still sort of in the zone where I could go to Germany, remember what I learned, and use that to learn the rest.

On the other hand, when I hang out with the German transfer student who goes to the same LARPs and parties I do, it kind of throws into sharp relief how much better his English is than my German.

        1. jarppi says:

It is funny how some people can learn new languages relatively easily and some people (like me) are barely able to learn one other language. I studied German for five years, still can’t speak a thing. Same story with Swedish, five years (plus one obligatory course in university) and I still only recognize a few words.

Anyway, English is a relatively easy language to learn so with its wide usage it might explain how that student is able to speak English well.

          1. Thomas says:

I tried learning German for 8 years and actually lived in Germany for a year and I reckon I’m probably not as good as Rutskarn :( It was after that that I got the hint that languages might not be for me, as much as I wanted to know them

          2. ehlijen says:

The comparative ease of being able to saturate your life with english media makes learning that particular language a lot easier, I think.

The internet is helping to find other language material as well, now, but english is still the easiest to pick up/improve through sheer osmosis.

            1. jarppi says:

That is true. But I also want to stress that English is a relatively easy language to learn. In my opinion it is also much smarter language and allows you to express yourselves easier than some other languages like for example Finnish, which is my native language. A proper pronounciation may take time to learn but ‘good enough’ -level doesn’t require ridiculous amount of work.

              1. ehlijen says:

In many ways it is. In many others, english is horrible to learn. Starting with pronunciation (scones vs bones, leicester etc) we get to irregular verbs and near complete lack of cases for nouns.

Of course most languages share some of these problems (and have their own). At the end of the day, no naturally evolved language was ever created with learnability for foreigners in mind.

But at least english lets me do things like write ‘learnability’ without knowing if it’s in the dictionary and people will still get what I mean. That’s something :)

        2. Kai v. Eggenburg says:

Well, I am impressed. I would never have thought you’ve been learning German for just two years. I rather thought you had at least a German speaking grandparent or something like that.

        3. lethal_guitar says:

Out of curiosity, how well are German bands (except Rammstein) known in the US? How did you get to know that Die à„rzte song, for example?

Oh, and I also like your pronunciation – really not bad!

    2. Daemian Lucifer says:

Meh,it was too soft.If you dont sound angry whatever you are saying, then you arent speaking proper german.

    3. Rili says:

While all of the above is true, I could not help but laugh when he failed to pronounce “Du hast nie gelernt dich artizukulieren”. Just because it’s so fitting to fail on the sentence that says “You never learnt to be articulate”

  10. RedSun says:

…So do you think it would look better or worse on my Google search record if I went into incognito mode before looking up pig butts?

    1. Either way, “Pig Butt Incognito” sounds like a really unfortunate anime character or a twisted assassin-type from a Quentin Tarantino film.

It’s also a great name for a rock band, of course.

      1. Grudgeal says:

Or one of the many lesser foes in Ranger Hardcore’s Rogue’s Gallery.

        1. djshire says:

          dot tumblr dot com

  11. guy says:

Oh right, Campster wasn’t here for the original hemipenes incident.

Also, if you want something to be an intimidating and terrifying voice, it probably shouldn’t sound like a friendly young girl giving helpful advice.

  12. You mock the chair physics in this game, OBVIOUSLY missing the point that it’s a reference to the kitchen chair stacking in Poltergeist!

Still, this was an odd direction for some Alan Wake DLC to take.

  13. patrick johnston says:

Ok hands up, who got curious and actually looked up pig butts upon mumbles request? be honest now.

    P.S. Kinda like human butts.

    1. And for those who wish to see what Mumbles hath wrought, click here for the Google Trends chart for pig butts.

      1. Warrax says:

That data raises so many questions… I don’t know where to start.

        1. Thomas says:

What happened in May 2010? What happened?

          1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Im more concerned about july 2013.A 100 pig butts were hit that day.

            1. Thomas says:

It’s actually a percentage, not a number. That’s just ‘the maximum no. of searches for pig butts’ whatever that is. It’s annoying, but to get a better idea of actual frequency you have to compare with other search terms.

Here you go, Pig Butts are almost exactly as popular as Darthsanddroids. In fact looking at that graph I am forced to conclude that Pig Butts are clearly responsible for the popularity of that website and the crash from the Great Pig Butt spike of 07 has brought down the website with it.

Luckily for us, it is official, Shamus Young/a> is more popular than Pig Butts.

Sadly the decline in british influence is no more apparent than here

              1. Thomas says:

Last link was meant to be this. Must have missed a bracket
                http://www.google.com/trends/explore#q=pig%20butts%2C%20pig%20bums&cmpt=q

              2. Warrax says:

Except for July 2013 and October 2012, when pig butts were slightly more popular than Shamus Young.

I don’t know what to make of that.

                1. Warrax says:

Oh! I’m occasionally more popular than pig butts, but never more popular than Shamus.

    2. Lord Nyax says:

I opted to search for “pig hindquarters” for the sake of plausible deniability.

“No, no. I’m like a farmer. I use words like hindquarters. So this is legitimate.”

    3. Corpital says:

Meh, I’ve had my fair share of pig butts and they neither look, nor feel, very much human.

Aaaanyway, I propose Mumbles was raised by pigs and can’t tell the difference between their and humans butts. Maybe that’s also where her cannibalism came from. It all makes sense to me now.

    4. Nick says:

Yup. And yeah, I can see the resemblance – the colour similarity definitely contributes

      1. That’s racist!

        I think… maybe.

Can we get a referee on this one?

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

There are pigs of various colors.

    5. Eruanno says:

      *Shamefully raises hand*

    6. Chris Davies says:

I like pig butts and I cannot lie. You other brothers can’t deny.

    7. Tse says:

I’ve actually seen a live pig, I didn’t really notice anything odd about the rump.

  14. tzeneth says:

Bonus points this episode combined some very boring gameplay with some highly entertaining banter. Also, Rutskarn, that was the perfect ending. :)

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Boring gameplay?Did you not look at the chairs?Or the dance? The physics in this game is amazing!

  15. Humanoid says:

You might have lost your entire UK viewership to their Internet filter thanks to the post title.

    1. Rutskarn says:

I think your avatar already cost us that demographic.

      1. Cybron says:

Did he change his avatar after this post, or am I just missing the joke?

        1. Rutskarn says:

It’s from a webcomic that would, on occasion, be banned by the UK’s filter.

          /understatement

          1. Rutskarn says:

(But it’s really good. Thought I’d make that clear.)

            1. Cybron says:

Oh, hah, that completely went over my head. I’m familiar with the comic, which is awesome and extremely NSFW (I’d link it for those not familiar with it, but Shamus might not appreciate that). My brain just didn’t put two and two together.

  16. Henson says:

During the part where Mumbles was hogging (GEDDIT.) the spotlight tastefully joking about women’s periods, all I could think about was the guy with a good attitude towards menstruation.

Now all we need is a guy with a good attitude towards rectums.

  17. Spammy says:

Well! I have been inspired to finally finish this game soon.

  18. AJax says:

Pig butts, broken AI/pathfinding and Rutskarn singing in German. This episode has it all.

  19. TheHemipenesThing says:

Chris, Chris, Chris (or Campster, Campster, Campster)

It’s come up a couple times now, I think, and this is what the hemipenes thing refers to

    http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?p=12496

    It first starts happening here

    http://youtu.be/O5zW2EoRqrw?t=16m45s

But this is _really_ when Rutskarn’s hemipenes moment starts:

    http://youtu.be/O5zW2EoRqrw?t=19m43s

And by 21:00/10, it’s basically done.

  20. anaphysik says:

Ha! Clever use of /The Chinese Room/ ref there at the start, Rutskarn!

  21. Daemian Lucifer says:

Pig butts(well, technically pig fronts) would be great if you wanted to make a frankenstein monster porn star, because pigs can orgasm for half an hour or so.

And you guys think that hemipenes are freaky.Pffft.

  22. Phase says:

Obligatory assertion that this is a really good game and you guys are bad at videogames.

  23. Bentusi16 says:

So the story was very creepy and disturbing, which I appreciate, but the game part of the game wasn’t all that scary.

The atmosphere wasn’t there from the first game, of the oppressive darkness all around you.

They were going for madness and later on it becomes really insane but there’s just not enough draw in it.

  24. Daemian Lucifer says:

So in todays episode,we learn that
Mumbles likes pig butts and she cannot lie
All the other hosts cant deny
That when a pork struts in with an itty bitty tail
And a round rump all pink and pale
They get sprung, wanna bite out a big chunk
    .
    .
    .
    (feel free to continue)

  25. anaphysik says:

Shamus: “What happened to this show?”

    Surprisingly little:

Randy in Season 1: “Mmm, dat fi~ne asari booty.”
Mumbles now: “Mmm, dat fi~ne swine booty.”

  26. Benjamin Hilton says:

I feel like there is a high proportion of gold comments on this post. Almost as if the Spoiler warning/Die Cast crew are so happy to have something to respond to after a few weeks without any videos.

    1. Thomas says:

My money’s on the guilt of having made this…thing :P

  27. Cybron says:

Anniversary episodes continue to be the best episodes.

I actually really like the idea of the monster game discussed in the episode. May have to look into something like that.

    1. Humanoid says:

Yep, quite pleased that it’s back to a single-player-plus-peanut-gallery format for the specials, as opposed the the multiplayer last year. Just feels quite a bit more audience-friendly when the co-hosts are basically an extension of the viewer.

I think it’s a similar thing, maybe to a slightly lesser extent, in the hangouts.

  28. So, after listening to your discussion about horror games in this episode, and the discussion on the DieCast. I’ve come to the conclusion that while I don’t know your stance on emulation, you guys should really check out the SNES version of the original Clock Tower (or get a SNES and and a translated reproduction cart of the game) – as I think it’s something that’s particularly relevant to the discussion of horror games over the past few episodes.

It’s a horror adventure game, where you play a girl trapped in a mansion, who is being stalked by a psychotic killer, and you have to get to the root of what’s going on and why you were brought there. The game has no combat. Instead, when the killer shows up you have to evade him by hiding. While the layout of the mansion is the same, different events happen in different places at different times, so the game never plays the same way twice.

The game was featured on an episode of Game Center CX/Retro Game Challenge – and in particular that episode is included on the DVD set that was released in the US (and you can get from Amazon).

I think you could find a lot of interesting things to say about the game, and it would make for some great conversation, either on the DieCast or on a very special episode of Retro Spoiler Warning or something.

  29. Zukhramm says:

Don’t know if I can watch this. I’ve already heard all the criticism against this game and what I usually watch Spoiler Warning for is hearing the opinion I haven’t already heard from anyone else.

    1. Sleeping Dragon says:

I will refer you to Chris’ response to Ofermod’s comment earlier, this may not be the usual sophisticated and intellectual deconstruction you’re used to SW delivering.

At the same time I am willing to bet considerable amounts of money that a large percentage of opinions expressed in the episode are something you haven’t heard before. Whether you’d want to change that is another matter entirely.

    2. Humanoid says:

Well you probably won’t be able to watch it in a literal sense because it’s almost as dark as Metro 2033.

The commentary on the other hand, is a uniquely more terrifying form of horror.

  30. FryGuy says:

A machine for bugs. Also, damn you mumbles. I did not need to know that about pig butts.

  31. BeamSplashX says:

Thank you, Mumbles, for demenstruating how good the environmental narrative in A Machine for Pigs is.

    1. Cybron says:

A riveting and subtle tale about one man’s quest for pig butt.

      1. Gruhunchously says:

Just another day in the life of Gordon Clara Oswald ‘Ozzy’ Mandius-Ramseys.

  32. Irridium says:

    NOW CAN. YOU. DIG. THAT.

    SUCKAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
