Tonight! At 11PM GMT! Josh vs. Rutskarn! Left 4 Dead 2! Versus gameplay! It’s the Spoiler Warning All-stars! And friends! Exclamation! Points! Are! Exciting!

As I mentioned earlier in the week, we’re all getting together to play Left 4 Dead 2 in versus mode. We’ll be streaming the results, and next week we’ll have a highlight reel of the event.

I prepared for tonight’s game with a rigorous program of never playing Left 4 Dead 2 versus mode, ever. So odds are, I won’t even know the map. According to Steam, I’ve clocked 6 hours in Left 4 Dead 2. On the other hand, I’ve clocked 260+ hours on the first game. So I should do really well as long as versus mode doesn’t require any knowledge of the new weapons, maps, or special infected. Or versus mode itself. So… yeah.

This is pretty much your classic gladiatorial match-up of convicted prisoners vs. ravenous lions. I don’t think the outcome is in doubt here. This is more about the spectacle than cheering for a particular side.

Team Josh (The Lions)

You can spectate the game from Josh’s POV here. (Limit 50 viewers.)
You can spectate the game from Randy’s POV here.

Josh, Glitch, Randy, Chris

Team Buttskarn (Those Who Are About To Die)

You will be able to watch the Rutskarn POV here.

Rutskarn, Mumbles, Shamus, Jarenth

Thanks to Steve Online for the title idea.

  1. Lame Duck says:

Why is Glitch’s name the only one in a small font on the poster?

    1. Burek says:

It might be a glitch on the site.

  2. RTBones says:

Guessing you’ll post a link when you all are up and running…?

EDIT: Or, I can actually pay attention and see that you have already given us Josh’s feed. Sigh, that kind of day.

    EDIT 2: And Rut’s feed too. I am apparently non-observant this evening….

EDIT 3: Also, Josh’s feed apparently can have no more than 50 viewers.

  3. Steve Online says:

As much as i would like to bask in Internet Fame, i have to admit that the joke originally belongs to Tom Francis of the PCGamer UK podcast.

    You are quite welcome, though.

  4. Chris says:

    All,

We’re still trying to figure out how to do this fancy dual-perspectives thing. Rason has his stream up now, though:

    http://www.livestream.com/rason

    1. jock says:

Is there some way to increase the number of allowed viewers? It’s apparently capped out at 50. Ruts’ stream is bigger and lets more people in, but the video says ‘Offline’

      1. Excludos says:

Afaik: Switch to something that isn’t livestream (there are so many other, better services out there its a miracle anyone is using livestream anyways), or pay to unlock the cap.

      2. Volatar says:

If you verify your channel you can get more than 50 viewers.

    2. TSi says:

Bandwidth is expensive but if I would try to do such thing, I would probably ask a friend to set his PC to record all livestreams at once.

  5. Paul Spooner says:

Aaaand maximum viewers reached. It may have something to do with people watching all three streams at once… Or the 50 person cap.

  6. Chris says:

Trying to see if I can also procast for help:

    http://www.livestream.com/errantsignal

  7. MatthewH says:

Oh wow… it just took we 20 minutes to get the joke. I thought it was a reference I didn’t know or something. What I get for being high-falutin about using the word “eaten.”

    1. Syal says:

…and it took me seeing this comment to get it.

  8. Curse my crappy work internets! I cannot enjoy the delicious L4D2 streaming this day! Curse them!

  9. anaphysik says:

So I’ve never played any L4D/2… so a question: is friendly fire on?

Because if so, Team BUTTSKARN might have a serious chance.

    1. Even says:

It’s always on (edit: With the exception of survivor bots, they can’t hurt you or other survivors even if they tried). The amount of damage it does varies across difficulty levels. I think for the Versus mode it always defaults to the Normal-level, which is still fairly forgiving compared to Advanced and Expert.

  10. Jamas Enright says:

Now, if you were using Twitch TV, it would be automatically reoording it for later availability…

  11. Michael says:

OMG YOU GUYS, ALL 8 PLAYERS ARE IN THE LOBBY AT ONCE!!! AND IT’S ONLY AN HOUR LATER!!!

    I even took a screencap.

    1. ps238principal says:

It’s almost like the Source: Elevator mod!

  12. Daemian Lucifer says:

So,is anyone else trying to follow both at the same time?

    1. GM says:

Just Rutskarn and when I change to , or from full screen it crashes but goes quickly back when reloading so good.

      1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Its awesome.Though I feel a headache coming on,so Im not sure if I should continue.

  13. Daemian Lucifer says:

I love it how everyone is making fun of Chris, and he just killed the whole team almost singlehandedly.

    1. MatthewH says:

Best moment of the show. With close second: “I think we might survive this.” “SHUT YOUR WHORE MOUTH, LOUIS!”

      1. Daemian Lucifer says:

My second best was Rutskarn jumping on Chris’s face, badmouthing him, while on the other side Chris was going “This was a bad idea! This was a bad idea!”

        1. Gruhunchously says:

Throughout the whole thing, it seemed as though Chris was the innocent and long suffering bystander in the almighty power struggle between Josh, Mumbles and Rutskarn.

  14. Drexer says:

That was awesome folks. Quite an almost-comeback from Ruts and co. which was certainly entertaining and funny.

Don’t forget to give an hug to Shamus though. He deserves it for what he suffered.

  15. Mailbox says:

    Well that was fun.

  16. RTBones says:

    That was entertaining. Thanks, y’all!

  17. newdarkcloud says:

A good time was had by all, except Shamus. But he didn’t seem to mind.

  18. Burek says:

Well that was fun. You should do this again with another game maybe sometime in the near future.

  19. Harry says:

I watched from Rutskarn’s perspective the whole way through, was very funny. Can’t wait to see Josh’s edited version featuring his team’s perspective as well!

  20. Daemian Lucifer says:

Chris won the game.Yay Chris!Killing the whole team that tried to make fun of him.Serves them right!

Thanks for the laugh guys. Also Mumbles was too nice. She needs to return to full-swearing mode.

  21. krellen says:

So, from people that actually play the game, was that game a lot closer than Team Food thought, or was it in fact a slaughter by the Lions?

    1. McNutcase says:

That was pretty much a stomping. L4D2 Versus is generally not a close match, and this session was no exception. While Team Protein came back well in the last two maps, it was never going to be enough to overhaul the lead Team Lions had from the first two. Another session might have seen a turnabout, but this one was not close.

      1. Alex says:

I’d say it was pretty close. Granted they were always behind, but in the 4th round onward they really started to pull through. Even if most of that was just Josh and co. trolling them, it wasn’t the blowout it was shaping up to be in the first few rounds.

    2. Cineris says:

Pretty much a stomp. Not that either team did well.

When you see one team doing things like setting up spawns in the elevator for kicks & giggles, or spawning in the safe room and waiting, you know that’s not a close game.

To be honest these guys were doing so badly that I’d be tempted to actually play this game again if a weaker team needed a ringer. I can do a very convincing drunken & angry BatMumbles impersonation.

  22. Johan says:

A lot of us watched several streams at once

It was fun watching the Lions troll Those Who Are about to Down

Hiding in the elevator was pretty good

And Shamus, we really did enjoy it, (or I did), but if you didn’t have as much fun I can understand

Now I really want to see Car Wrestling on Borderlands

  23. Phase says:

I would buy a DVD of just the lobby conversations.

    1. Irridium says:

Second. I really hope someone recorded the hour-long lobby session.

Just as entertaining, if not more, than the game.

      1. Deadfast says:

Livestream should have a recording of the entire stream for each channel, lobby madness included.

  24. Daemian Lucifer says:

+1 for them doing something like this again.+2 if its saints row.+999999 if its mass effect 3.

Yes,duke nukem forever!Anytime Rutskarn suffers is a fun time for everyone else.

    1. Even says:

I’d still love to see some Magicka. There are few experiences as hilariously anarchistic as playing through the game in co-op. Especially when you’re all (mostly) new to the game.

      1. Jexter says:

+1 to this. No game I know of captures the team killing experience so perfectly.

        1. 4th Dimension says:

Magica: Mage team kill/suicide simulator – Total Biscuit.

  25. Aldowyn says:

… Dang it, I forgot about this. Now I am quite put out with myself :/

  26. KremlinLaptop says:

    Come on guys.

    DO A PODCAST.

So fun listening to you guys discuss games you’re interested in and such stuff.

  27. thebigJ_A says:

    You should play DayZ.

  28. Alex says:

I didn’t know who Jarenth was when I started watching, but by the Finale his comments were my favourite part of the stream.

And Shamus, I sympathize with that part where you were the Boomer, and it didn’t vomit when you told it to. That game has screwed me so many times when playing as that Infected.

Also fun: When you vomit on all four survivors, and they all magically aren’t affected. And then the next round comes, and their Boomer barfs through a solid wall, but somehow that counts.

Seriously, that game was made by chimps.

    1. Jarenth says:

I can’t actually remember most of what I said beyond ‘Ow, my face’ and ‘We can still turn this around’.

      1. krellen says:

People were asking in chat “which one’s Jarenth”, and I replied “He’s got a moderately heavy accent”. I hope that helped people.

        1. Jarenth says:

I suppose ‘he’s the one that’s not Glitch’ wouldn’t have helped?

          1. krellen says:

I doubt anyone unfamiliar with your voice would be any more likely to be familiar with Glitch’s.

  29. ENC says:

Such a mess trying to download from livestream, hopefully someone can organise it on twenty sided.

I tried to wake up at 5AM Shamus, honest I did.

Also saw ‘chrisfranklin’ on the spy party beta list.

  30. Sekundaari says:

Fun times all the way through. I enjoyed both the main event and the after-party streams, and I’m intrigued by some of the ideas for future streams/episodes. Thanks.

  31. Halceon says:

    Vos saluto, morituri.

  32. ENC says:

To Chris’s stream of the lobby stuff: I could see the TF2 spy as a woman in the vain of all the Bond flicks that have come and gone.

Also, spy party I REALLY want ever since I read the guy’s post on his work on Spore’s creature creator (and how disappointed he was with the main game) and I love deception games where you can win without ‘firing a single shot’ so to speak.

  33. Galad says:

Can we have a wallpaper version of that poster, Shamus, or anyone else who can provide it? Puhleeeeze? Prettypleasewithsugarontop? *puppy eyes*
