In case you didn’t already have enough vertical lifting devices in your life.

I meant to have this up earlier this week, but a combination of technical problems (i.e., Adobe Premiere memory leaks) and mild illness thwarted that plan. That’s also why there wasn’t a Shogun 2 post this week either. Fortunately, I’m feeling much better now, which is good, considering PAX is next week.

On that topic, next week is probably going to be pretty weird. I’m not sure what sort of content Shamus has planned for PAX, or if he has anything planned at all, for that matter. But you can probably expect at least a Shogun 2 post sometime early next week, to make up for the missing one this week.

Now what are you doing still reading this? Go watch us fight the elevator gods!

  1. Harry says:

I think I watched a Let’s Play of this thing before, or maybe it was a dream? I’ve never been more confused.

    1. Matthias says:

If you dreamt this, you should seek professional help…

      1. Bryan says:

I’ve dreamt some *very* strange things about elevators.

Granted, I was (I think) four or five years old at the time…

    2. Jordan says:

I think RPS (or some other similar site) did a playthrough of it.

      1. Harry says:

That’s the one! They linked to a Youtube playthrough. It’s good to know my subconscious isn’t quite as unhinged as I had feared.

  2. Dmatix says:

Well that was… something. The way Shamus kept jumping while looking at his watch was hilarious.

  3. GiantRaven says:

You know…that watch thing would be pretty good in particularly immersive, time consuming games.

    1. Michael says:

Already been integrated into every Steam game – Shift+Tab shows your system’s time, among other things.

Though, if you’re not using Steam, I suppose Alt+Tab works nicely.

      1. Master Jedi says:

Yeah, alt+tab works well if you want to crash the game you were playing. Well, its more like a Russian roulette game. You never know when it will crash. At least it happens to me a lot.

        1. Simon Buchan says:

Are you using XP? The display driver model introduced in Vista fixed that pretty much for good as near as I can tell, though a vary few older games (DirectX 7?) games don’t let you actually see anything on your desktop, it never crashes things now.

      2. GiantRaven says:

Sure you could do either of those, but it would be nice to have an option that didn’t break the flow of the game.

        1. Peter H. Coffin says:

Some people strap actual clocks to their real-world wrists, just like in the game. The clocks track the computer’s time pretty well, too, even when the computer’s in sleep mode.

          1. Lord Moldybut says:

What devilry is this! Madness! How would one build up enough steam power upon ones wrist!

  4. Deux Mains says:

This made my brain itch, but I kind of want to play that game for myself now.

Either that or stand in a lift and neck a bunch of hallucinogens.

    1. tjtheman5 says:

Or you could play that game while necking a bunch of hallucinogens.

  5. evileeyore says:

And lo the Elevator gods won and there were many.

    1. Nyctef says:

One of the things I loved about ME3 were the number of elevators that got destroyed. Man (and/or woman) rebelled against the elevator gods that day :)

      1. Ringwraith says:

There was also the point in ME2 where an incredibly slow lift playing the original game’s elevator music annoyed Miranda so much she hacks it to shut up and go faster.

        1. James says:

and then you get a loading screen of a elevator going up Dantius towers for some reason, would have been a funny joke if you had to sit through the whole ride. IMO

      2. krellen says:

I really liked the elevators in ME1. People that think loading screens are better are crazy.

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

I agree with you.Not only were they better than those stupid cutscenes in me2,but they also helped the illusion of this whole thing being a single giant world, instead of a bunch of small rooms.

          1. Irridium says:

They also helped flesh you your companions a bit. Show them interacting with each other. Which is always fun to see.

        2. Dave B says:

I also agree. Some of them took way too long, but that’s more of a problem with the game engine than with the idea itself.

  6. Deadyawn says:

Wow. I don’t even…I…have to make my friends play this.

  7. Even says:

You should definitely do a co-op Magicka run next for these off-season episodes.

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Second.Or maybe even a whole season of magicka.

      1. Anorak says:

They might never talk to each other again.

        1. Jarenth says:

If Reginald Cuftbert can’t break up this group, nothing can.

          Nothing.

  8. DrKultra says:

I don’t know how I feel about this game.

I do have the huge doubt, about it assigning floors at random from a huge list, or if the floors are predetermined.

    Anybody got an answer?

    1. Steve Online says:

The floors are picked at semi-random from a smallish list.
For instance, the floor where isaac gets grabbed by The Hand can only happen after he gets on.

Secondly, Mr. Sunabouzu is a goon, hence the inclusion of things like the Racist Cockroach Floor from SA’s Lost Planet 2 let’s play. There are actually some chatlogs posted on the wall of the top floor from their IRC detailing the game’s creation process, which is basically just the author saying “I’m going to make a game about waiting in an elevator, and make like an hour of content for it. You all think i’m joking, but it WILL happen.”

Lastly, all applause to Shamus for his sick dance moves. Groove on, Breen. Groove on.

      1. Jakale says:

I saw that floor and my jaw dropped.
“That..that’s from Lost Planet 2! That’s from the Let’s Play! That means whoever made this visits, or is part of, the SA forums. This game makes soo much more sense now.”
I wanted to will myself in there to tell them when it sounded like they didn’t catch the reference. Then I remembered the comments section and calmed down to finish watching and lo and behold someone else already knew.

I could be wrong, but do you think the T-Rex bit was a nod to the Blackadder movie where he time travels? I half expected one of the NPCs to wave some underwear at it.
Also, I kinda want Ruts to make a story out of that noir monologue he started now.

        1. Milos says:

Just grab a cheap hardboiled detective novel at random and chances are it starts like that.

        2. Tom says:

Just how many references are in this thing? The red eyes and hand are almost certainly a reference to the tunnel monster in Beneath a Steel Sky.

  9. Daemian Lucifer says:

I like how for the most of this Josh was on the ground, and Shmaus was bunnyhopping.

Also, congrats to JPH for the cameo.

    And the puns were hjorrendous!

    1. Even says:

I abhjor hjour use of language. It causes severe hemhjorrhaging.

      1. Destrustor says:

Hjorr the love of god and all that is hjorly, STOP THIS!!!

        1. Ambitious Sloth says:

          Hjorr just over reacting.

          1. Sleeping Dragon says:

Yeah, if you can’t stand what, half a Hjor of puns you really don’t deserve your geek cred.

            1. tjtheman5 says:

I think we need to stop punning and take up something more peaceful, like Hjorticulture.

              1. Harry says:

Just thought I’d stick my Hjor in and say that this discussion is getting a little Hjormonal.

    2. JPH says:

Man, I’m getting guest star appearances all up in this net.

  10. Raygereio says:

Chris’ short-lived attempt at serious commentery was glorious in it’s futility and desperation.

    1. bit says:

Unfortunately, I think the Deus Ex season gave him the ill-advised impression that half the time Spoiler Warning is SUPPOSED to be about serious commentary, rather than hats.

    2. MatthewH says:

I want to see commentary on this as Mass Effect (or really, any modern videogame) with the violence stripped out.

You get a game where all you can do is check your meters, and stare at your party members. You know, the hot chick, the bizarre alien who isn’t too bizarre…

  11. Grag says:

Good thing you didn’t get too many more Hjords in there.

Someone might have had to call Hjorders.

  12. ngthagg says:

When Rutskarn got going on the puns, you should have ignjord him.

    1. Gamer says:

Rutskarn would only stop if they used violence.

      They should have gored him.

  13. Mathias says:

Isn’t Hjord pronounced Jorr, or is it just my native Danish creeping up on me?

    1. Jordan says:

When you say Jorr you mean Yorr though, don’t you? Times like these make me wish people on the internet spoke in the International Pronounciation Alphabet.

      1. Mathias says:

Yes, that. Incidentally, “hjord” is an older Danish term for “heard”.

  14. Wandring says:

The ending blew my mind! Standing around watching Spoiler Warning?!? What? How? (and most importantly) WHY?!?

Also I think we have used too many puns and we can’t aHjord any more!

    1. Gamer says:

This was an amazing meta-commentary about the show’s audience in my opinion. We spend our days trudging through life. We do long laborious things occasionally interrupted by funny, strange, or even disturbing events, meeting people we may never see again. But at the end of the day’s journey, we can come home knowing that Spoiler Warning is here and we can just sit and relax.
This has to be the most artistic game I’ve ever seen… or not.

Being an art critic isn’t really as hard as I thought it would be.

    2. Eärlindor says:

I know! That blew my freaking mind too!! What’s up with that???

      1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Josh has become a masterful editor it would seem.

        1. Michael says:

Really? I thought the TV at the end DID play youtube clips. To be fair, I might’ve read those reviews wrong.

          1. Josh says:

It does, that was a feature of the mod.

            1. Eärlindor says:

              How does it work? O.O

              1. Falcon_47 says:

Why is everyone so surprised? You should check the Theater mod for Gmod, it’s basically a giant theater hall which plays youtube videos at the request of everyone inside. As the creators call it, it’s multiplayer youtube, go have a look…

                1. Jordan says:

The lack or weapons or slurpy straws stopped it from achieving full potential. A strider suddenly bursting through the screen at the climax of the “legally-streamed” movie and killing everyone would be fantastic.

              2. Pete says:

I imagine it just loads the page as normal (like the steam browser) and then just renders it to a polygon in the world instead of directly to screen.

                1. Chris says:

As I understand it that’s how it works – my confusion is with how it syncs the video for all players (or whether it attempts to do so at all). YouTube isn’t a lossy streaming service, so not everyone will necessarily be at the same place in the video if someone has a slow connection and has to buffer.

                  1. SyrusRayne says:

This was also a feature of GM Tower. You saw a picture of the suites, at one point. There was a rather large theatre area where you could queue up youtube videos for an audience, or you could watch them in private in your suite (which you can decorate.)

There’s also other stuff. Radio-streaming, a number of minigames, etc. Actually very impressive, as far as GMod goes. I’m hoping they bring the project back some time.

(Sunabouzu was one of the developers for GMTower, by the way.)

            2. Daemian Lucifer says:

              Really?Thats amazing!

              1. gyfrmabrd says:

Give it a lick, it tastes just like raisins!

Sorry, but that phrase is sort of hard coded into my brain as a response whenever I hear (or read) the word amazing…
For the sake of all that is good in the world, I hope you don’t know why.

                1. Entropy says:

Is it related to your horse? Should we be looking at it?

                  1. Newbie says:

Does it turn into a plane though?

            3. Johan says:

I thought to myself it would have been really meta if you put in the part of the New Vegas SW where you watch the Fallout 3 SW to find out how to spell Reginald’s last name

              1. dovius says:

And then the view shifts to live action as we see Rutskarn, sitting at his computer watching this episode, who then simply exclaims “That game was Hjorrible!”.

            4. Irridium says:

You should have loaded the New Vegas episode where you loaded the Fallout 3 episode to see if it was “Cuftbert” or “Cuthbert”.

So we could watch you watching yourselves watching yourselves.

              Yo dawg, ect.

  15. Gamer says:

Don’t worry about Hjord. I sent Hjord toward the fjord, armed with a sword, to fill up my gourd.

You know… if Shamus lived in Orlando, he would have been Orlando Bloom while in the light.

    I have no shame.

  16. Eärlindor says:

    OHMGOSHWHATISTHISICANTEVENBEGINTOCOMPREHENDWHAAAA????????????

  17. Grudgeal says:

Once again, this mod proves the ever-lasting wisdom of Jean-Paul Sartre, when he stated that Hell was being locked away forever in a room with your friends.

  18. Supernaut says:

Shamus you are truly The Hjord of The Dance.

  19. Eleion says:

I always feel sad when people get mad at Rutskarn’s puns, because I love them so much! I mean, come on! “New World Hjorder” is comedy gold!

I am 100% serious. I think they are very clever and I want to have his pun-babies.

    Wait, what?

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

How can you say that?!Thats hjorrible! The kid is barely 12!

      1. X2Eliah says:

He has started to use the ocabulary of a 15-year-old, though, cussing and swearing all over the place (ref: hitman olympics video on Rut’s blog). So it’s okay as long as you register in Niger.

  20. Hitch says:

    Worst

    Ending

    Ever

    1. Michael says:

Elevator: Source. It’s for Garry’s Mod, I think.

  21. George says:

Makes me think they should do more co-op games.

Is it bad that I’m watching this on April 1st?

Although I have to admit, Elevator: Source would be more entertaining if you could get off at floors, and if there were ways to ‘win’ if you got off on the right floors. Or only lose if you got off at the wrong ones.

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

But that would defeat the purpose of the game. Its not about winning or losing, its about waiting.

      1. Jordan says:

And just like that this mod has a tagline.

  22. Grag says:

I got a real lift out of watching this.

    It really elevated my spirits.

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

      That was pretty low.

      1. Milos says:

Hopefully this thread will die out before it escalates to something awful.

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

          Dont get your hopes up.

  23. Jacob Albano says:

    So it’s a Tardis, right?

    1. Ambitious Sloth says:

Your elevators don’t do this? There’s a reason I always take the stairs.

      1. MintSkittle says:

Most of the elevators I’ve used work alright, but I did find this one earlier today:

        http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-636

        1. Sydney says:

You’re better off taking the elevator than http://www.scp-wiki.net/scp-087. Even that elevator. Probably.

          1. Josufu says:

Thanks for posting these! I’ve been going through the entries all day.

        2. AlternatePFG says:

          SCP Wiki?

I already know off the bat that that particular elevator’s going to make you explode, go insane or release some horrible monstrosity out into the world.

          1. Destrustor says:

Nah, it mostly just kidnaps you.
And then does all those things at once.

  24. Keredis says:

I have no idea what I just watched. The world is a worse place for having me in it having seen this.

    Keep up the good work.

  25. Eärlindor says:

    21:26

I suppose he’s the Hjord of the Ring?

  26. Frankly, I’m surprised it took as long as it did for someone to drop a Devil reference.

  27. Nathaniel says:

How can Hjord get on the elevator, WHEN HE IS ALREADY HERE!

    1. EpsilonNaught says:

      Hjord is ALWAYS already here.

When it comes to being here, already is practically all he ever is.

      1. Destrustor says:

Yeah, talk about a one-trick pony.

      2. Lord of Rapture says:

        Nice MSPA references guys.

  28. LunaticFringe says:

…I think that acid I took four years ago just kicked in.

    1. Sumanai says:

This is why I don’t take acid four years ago.

  29. Slipshod says:

Best 24 minutes of my life. OMG.

  30. Neko says:

    So awesome.

  31. Eruanno says:

    What… was… I don’t… how did… what…

  32. 4th Dimension says:

Yo dude, I heard you like some Spoiler Warning, so I put some Spoiler Warning in your Spoiler Warning, so you can Spoiler Warning while you Spoiler Warning.

    1. Eruanno says:

      Actually, it’s “yo dawg”.

      1. Yo dude, I heard you like yo dawg so I put some yo dawg in your yo dude so you can yo dude while you yo dawg.

  33. Sleeping Dragon says:

9:50-10:05 and the (Rutskarn and Josh shipping) crowd goes wild!

    What?!

  34. Dovius says:

    14:00

JPH is now playing Deus Ex: Invisible War

Ah, so that’s the true horror part of this game.

    1. JPH says:

      I know, right? :[

Incidentally: Critique/analysis/rant of said game probably coming soon to a blog near you!

      1. dovius says:

Looking forward to it! Discovered the blog today, in fact!

      2. JPH says:

For anybody who’s curious, I posted it. The post is kind of underwhelming and lacking in quality, which I suppose fits the game.

  35. Museli says:

This game is wrong on so many levels.

  36. littlefinger says:

6:00 The Polito Form is dead, Insect. Are you afraid? What do you fear? The End of your Trivial Existence?

  37. dovius says:

Also, because I’m a nitpicker with those kind of things: that’s not a guitar, that’s actually an acoustic bass. Note the size of the thing and the fact that it only has 4 strings.

    1. X2Eliah says:

      It’s still a variation of a guitar.

      1. dovius says:

I know, hence the admitted nitpicking.
It just annoys me when people get things about relatively standard musical instruments wrong, like how nearly every damn guitar in animated series manages to have 6 tuning pegs yet between 3 and 5 strings.
But then that’s just a pet peeve of mine.

  38. ClearWater says:

Ten minutes in I thought: “am I really going to watch this all the way through? Yes, I am.” I still don’t know why I did though, nor why I enhjored it.

  39. AlternatePFG says:

I played the hell out of that mod when it came out a few months ago. I was hoping they’d update it with more floors, but alas, they did not. Too bad too, cause I thought it was really entertaining seeing the reaction of all the other people in the elevator.

They had a surprisingly large amount of people in the elevator at the end.

    1. Gamer says:

I think you meant to say that there was a Hjord of people.

  40. James Pony says:

WHY DID YOU NOT STREAM THIS LIVE? I WOULD’VE WATCHED IT ALL THE WAY THROUGH!

  41. tjtheman5 says:

What song is that in the end credits?

    1. Chris says:

You can find all of the songs the game uses here.

The end credits song in particular is this song.

  42. Packie says:

    0_o

Do more weird ass source mods. It’s just… illuminating I guess.

    1. JPH says:

I vote they do E.Y.E.: Divine Cybermancy. It’s the epitome of weird-ass source mod, though it admittedly costs money.

      1. Eärlindor says:

I think EYE would be perfect, yeah.

    2. KremlinLaptop says:

      Hell, there’s five of them.

I say an episode of them playing Hidden: Source. I still love that mod.

  43. guy says:

Clearly the ending was courtesy of Cyborg Satan. Shamus really needs to get a new audio card.

  44. Jace911 says:

    My God…

    Best. Episode. Ever.

  45. silentlambda says:

I could consider this a Very Special Episode of Spoiler Warning. It’s how we all learned to make peace with next generation loading.

Having “Build That Wall” for elevator muzak was awesome as well.

    1. SyrusRayne says:

“Down With the Sickness” Muzak was my favorite, but “Build That Wall” is a close second.

  46. Mark says:

    Best Spoiler Warning yet!

  47. krellen says:

I’m internet poster krellen, and this is my favourite Spoiler Warning on the internet.

    1. Irridium says:

      Second.

    2. JPH says:

I still think Cherry Blossom Murderversary is best.

      1. IFS says:

My favorite is the trainz one

  48. Cybron says:

    That was amazing.

  49. Marcellus says:

I can’t help but think that this game should’ve been held off for the eventual finale of Spoiler Warning (whenever that happens), featuring everyone from the history of the show. A completely WTF multiplayer experience like this would make for the perfect tone to end on, honestly. (Not that I wish for Spoiler Warning to end any time soon.)

  50. 13 CBS says:

Oh, poor Isaac! He was the finest mind of his generation…

    1. IFS says:

Go on ahead, there’s something I need to do…

  51. Alan says:

I am glad I live in a world where such a thing exists.

I think that there are a lot of things that could be done with it, and I think it probably doesn’t replay well, but for what it is, pretty impressive.

  52. Fists says:

Darwin was in fact a female skeleton, you can tell by the bowl shaped pelvis, massive plot twist!

  53. Chris Headley says:

I do not know if I should feel bad that this was played or that I watched. Thank you for my Through the Looking Glass Moment today, I can now smell the colors.

  54. Naota says:

True story, both versions of the player model hands we use in Firearms: Source have watches. Both of them tell the actual time using the user’s system clock and a clever implementation of Source animation states.

Despite being one of the developers… I have no idea why this is either.

  55. Reach says:

Shamus definitely wins hilarity MVP this time.

  56. skm742 says:

    I don’t know… I might have liked it more if it were a funicular…

  57. I am both horribly, horribly confused and entertained. WTF entertainment taken to a whole new level! I’d tip my hat to you guys, but I’m kinda afraid Josh would kill me for my awesome bonnet.

  58. Jarenth says:

Do I really need to point out, at this juncture, that I was laughing pretty much the entire time? I’m fairly certain that’s implied by now.
