Christmas Eve

I got to spend Sunday afternoon with an old friend. We grew up together, were inseperable after high school for a few years, and then parted ways as jobs and marriage took us in different directions. I’ve seen him twice in the last fifteen years. That’s a shame. He and his family are good company. (And if he manages to make it here: “Hi Jim!”)

The holidays are off to a great start. Lots of fun, impractical gifts so far. It’s nice to be 36 and still get toys for Christmas.

I have some thoughts on STALKER, but I don’t feel like writing about gunfights in a nuclear wasteland on Christmas Eve.

And those who don’t celebrate Christmas, well then just substitute any occasion you DO celebrate around this time of year. I want everyone to have as good a time as they can, now the nights are getting shorter again, for those of us North of the Equator.

    Io, Saturnalia!

  31. Chris Arndt says:

    Merry Christmas, my idol.

I saw the inventor of the CAPTCHA on Wired Science on PBS… your article on how unnecessary the complex CAPTCHA was made me realize how much I truly have a guy to hate in this guy. He proud of something so simple yet too complex. What good is a security thing if it foils ME?

So in my rhetoric the inventor of CAPTCHA has now been bundled with Mitt Romney.

So while we’re here your bit about the impractical gifts and toys for Christmas… my mother is insistent on my making me grow up and refuse to give me toys, like my brother will. So how can I make her stop? I’m great with my sister supplying me with tools and such that make more more sophisticated and dapper than my fellow midwesterner but we all know that 26-year-old boys just wish to luxuriate when the work is done.

As for the (best) friends’ long-unseen… I know exactly what you mean.

  32. C David Dent says:

What a strange coincidence! I too got a call from a very close friend from high-school who I see only vary rarely since he moved to China. He called out of the blue on Friday and I was able to coordinate a get together with him and a third of our inseparable trio.

It was the first time in nearly 8 years (as best as we can recon) that we’ve all been together at the same time. It was a lot of fun to be around people with whom you have no pretense or position. People who, unlike most of your friend, that you trust implicitly like family.

It made me feel inexplicably …happy. Like some unseen holiday spirit had infused me. Jolly.

  33. Blurr says:

    Merry Christmas!

  34. Smyth says:

Merry Fishmas Shamus, and to all an R’lyeh night!

  35. Boingophile says:

    Happy Holidays, Shamus!

  36. Bizarre says:

Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Crazy Kwanzaa, a tip-top Tết and a solemn, dignified Ramadan!

  37. RibbitRibbit says:

    Merry Christmas all!

  38. Browncoat says:

    Happy Festivus.

As this is not my blog, I’ll forego the airing of the grievances.

  39. Vallejo says:

Merry Christmas, Shamus (and everyone else)!
