This is Christmas

Geeze. Let’s see, let’s see…

  • Normal baseline level of Holiday confusion, plus…
  • Daughter is going to have surgery (Tonsillectomy) this week.
  • Son is sick with a worrisome fever that has hung around for about five days.
  • Death in the family. (Not a close relative, but this was someone young – a twenty-three year old woman – and that is always a tragic blow.)
  • Hectic project at work needs to be done BEFORE Christmas.

This sounds like the set-up to one of those wacky movies where the frantic energy of the holidays acts as a catalyst of healing and reconciliation, and at the end everyone remembers the true spirit of Christmas. Except in this case, it isn’t very hilarious, everyone already has a firm grip on the Christmas spirit, and we were all getting along just fine to begin with.

Sigh.

Maybe my boss will give me a call on Tuesday and say something like, “Shamus, you’re a hilarious guy and I want to see the next issue of your webcomic, so take a day off. Screw the client.”

I’m thinking this isn’t very likely, but this is the season when miracles happen.

If not, then we can catch up with the comic next week.

  1. James says:

Take a break, man. We the internet public can wait a week while you get your life under a semblance of your control.

    Happy Holidays and Merry Festivus!

  2. Corwin says:

I’ll second what James says above and add I hope your kids recover quickly. !

  3. Stiehle says:

Have a happy holidays! Your reading public will wait breathlessly until the new year! And I know what you mean about sick kids. Man, this winter season has been kinda brutal on us as well. Though I think I just forget about how bad it is from year to year. Probably my brain’s way of keeping me sane. Or partly sane, anyway…

  4. John Fiala says:

Take your time, man. Get the important stuff done – we’ll be here when you get back.

And tell your kid to enjoy the tonsillectomy.. I remember fondly sleeping all day after it, and then staying up all night eating italian ices and reading. ^_^ It’s about the most fun you can have in a hospital at that age.

  5. Will says:

When you’re passing out free ice cream, no one has a right to complain when the freezer runs (temporarily) dry. Have a Merry Christmas.

  6. Telas says:

All true geeks need to be occasionally reminded of the following:

    Real Life Comes First

Take care of your family, your job, and (most importantly) yourself. We’ll be here when you have time.

  7. bkw says:

Hope all goes well for your daughter; I imagine you know you should bring your son to the doctor (any fever that persists for more than three days, sign of infection, etc etc).

Happy holidays to you and yours.

Also, I find no end of amusement in the fact that we actually have an acronym “IRL” to differentiate between “Real Life” and our on-line universes …

  8. Julia says:

Best wishes to you, your family, and especially your children.

  9. Mrs T says:

The rules say that all free ice cream goes to the kid with tonsillitis and their siblings. Can’t break the rules!

    Have a happy Christmas!

  10. Carl the Bold says:

Yes to all the above. Please do not overlook the fact that this is supposed to be a joyous time of year. Good luck with that.

  11. Rich says:

Good luck. Hope everything works out for the best. Merry Christmas.

  12. Tirgaya says:

What are you even worried about? The networks regularly leave us hanging for a month or more… AND THEY GET PAID A LOT TO MAKE SHOWS.

So.. take all the time you & yours could possibly need and then take an extra few days to boot!

We’ll all be here whenever you get back.

    Enjoy the Holidays.

  13. mom says:

    Listen to your friends! :)

  14. Acksiom says:

Merry Christmas to you and yours!

  15. Robert says:

What? I have become addicted, and I surf in for my M-W-F fix, and it isn’t here? What kind of God would allow something like this to happen?

Dude, I beg of you, get your priorities in order. You can always find a new family. But the lifespan I’m spending waiting on this brilliant comic series is irreplaceable. Don’t think of them – think of me.

  16. Shamus says:

Thanks for the kind words, everyone.

    And Merry Christmas.
