It’s very likely that some portion of you will not have ever watched The Guild. I know I didn’t see it until it was over a year old.

And even if you’ve seen it before, it’s always good for a chuckle:

    Gotta love The Guild. :)

  2. mixmastermind says:

I find this less funny than most, having only played one MMO, WoW, for 17 days before stopping. I don’t really get the injokes about MMO players.

  3. Carra says:

Only found out about it two months ago and watched them all.

As an on and off WoW player it’s quite fun. I especially like the way the lead character is portrayed. Shy, antisocial but still wanting to meet that special one.

  4. Jeremiah says:

Having never really gotten into MMO games I still find The Guild really funny most of the time. Most of the humor really doesn’t require any knowledge of MMOs whatsoever.

  5. Scourge says:

I got hooked up with it once I watched the Video of them…

    Its fun to watch.

But yeah, the guild is fun to watch. I only watched a few episodes of it. Aggro control or something.

  6. Spider Dave says:

This show is hilarious. I started watching it before actually playing any MMOs, but I still found it really funny.

And I heard Felicia Day is currently the number one celebrity crush amongst nerd-boys like myself.

  7. krellen says:

My experience with the Guild consists entirely of Felicia Day pimping it hardcore in Commentary! the Musical. Which is funny in itself.

  8. Badger says:

I’m a regular reader of Wil Wheaton’s blog, and he’s a friend of Felicia Day’s so he pimps it hard there. As a gamer, I find it hilarious. Of course Felicia is easy on the eyes (yeah, I have a thing for redheads- my wife knows about it, ok?), so that makes the show even better. I’m kinda sad they are sponsored by Microsoft, but it has enabled them to keep going, so in that respect it’s all good.

  9. Pete Complete says:

    This is idiotic.

  10. mitian says:

It’s not Pure Pwnage so I’m contractually obligated to boycott it.

  11. Sho says:

I’ve been aware of the series for at least a few months and decided to watch it through shortly ago. It’s a bit odd in parts, and not exactly constant raw side-splitting hilarity, but it’s amusing and I did enjoy watching it. I do recommend it to MMO players.

  12. Audacity says:

This was entertaining, especially the guy with the kitchen built around his computer, up until the 1:55 mark. My mom used to run a daycare out of the house, and I’ve met some parents that were really like that. Otherwise it was pretty funny, and I was able to get most of the jokes without ever having played an MMO.

Edit: Hey that’s Penny from DR Horrible! (Not that everyone else didn’t probably know that already.)

  13. AboveUp says:

I quite like The Guild. I avoided it at first because of the ads on Xbox Live, the still image of the cartoon characters version of their in-game avatars didn’t look too promising.
Plus it was on Xbox Live and I stupidly expected them to ask for money per download, like they did with Red vs Blue.

A friend told me I should watch it sometime and that it was actually free, I did and I’m really happy I have.

  14. Hey, it’s the girl from the Sears commercial!

One of my friends (He’s Xellos on here, may well post) apparently interviewed, or will interview, Felicia Day about copyright stuffs. I have nothing to add but that. ;)

  15. AlfieUK says:

I’ve been watching this since just before the end of series 1, don’t play any MMOs, yet the humour still rings a bell. I know several MMO players who I can occasionally pry away from their screens to come and talk to real people that definitely fit the stereotypes :)

  16. Gresman says:

I’m a gamer. I also admit that I’m a WoW gamer. I’m somewhat offended by this. I know that it is meant satirical but I know a lot of people I played with over the years and none of them is anything like these characters.

Or maybe I’m cut from a different kind of wood. As being a gamer in a german speaking country tends to have a lot of negative effects on someone. We are always painted as such in the media and we try to fight it and it’s kind of a fight against windmills.

  17. Sam says:

I watched the entire series a couple of weeks ago. I thoroughly love it. Every stereotype is spot on, even getting downright creepy with Vort (or Vork…I forget) and Zaboo. Plus, it helps that Felicia Day is a total fox.

  18. Veloxyll says:

I should watch that at some point – since I bet I do fall in to, or have seen, a lot of the stereotypes, even though gah neglectful mother character >.<

And now for something completely different: (not in any way related to Monty Python, but in every way related to awesome)

  19. ccesarano says:

First heard of Felicia Day when Penny Arcade was spamming Dr. Horrible. I didn’t find her to be special really, though I must say I was intrigued when I saw her in the post-apocalypse episode 13 of Dollhouse. This was my first chance to check out the Guild.

Still don’t see why people make that big of a deal about her, but I guess when some celebrity confesses to being a geek it’s a big deal (though what has she done before The Guild and Dr. Horrible?).

  20. krellen says:

She was a junior Slayer in the last season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ccesarano.

  21. Randolpho says:

I love The Guild. It’s a great series. I especially enjoy the characteristics of the various characters, and the introduction of Wil Wheaton as the rival Guild leader really made my day. Wasn’t expecting that.

But nothing makes me laugh out loud harder than The Legend of Niel Warning, definitely NOT Work Safe.

Another great gaming oriented video series that I very much love is Freeman’s Mind. This is much more work safe, but may not be sanity safe. You’ve been warned. :)

  22. Daimbert says:

I ended up seeing the video and then seeing a couple episodes at random, and considering that one of the themes seems to be about the character the Felicia plays being considered unattractive, the fact that Felicia Day fits the precise definition of “Hollywood Homely” ( http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/HollywoodHomely ) kind’ve ruins it for me. Add to that the fact that there don’t really seem to be any people that are actually normal (well, maybe the teenagers), and I’ll pass, thanks.

  23. ccesarano: I’m pretty sure she’s more a geek celebrity. She was in a Joss show, then the Guild, Dr. Horrible, etc. I don’t think she was famous by any means.

I kinda feel the same way, though – everyone I know is in total geeklust with her, but I just don’t see it. My wife explains that she’s pretty without being Hollywood pretty, which I guess I can see. I’m blessed with a geeky wife, so the simple fact of “Girl who is geeky” doesn’t immediately flag for me. ;)

  24. Liz says:

Yay, The Guild! Watched it right after Dr. Horrible came out.

Mostly commenting to address those who are saying “yeah, what’s so great about Felicia Day?”: It’s not just that she’s been IN a bunch of geeky stuff, she’s MADE geeky stuff. She writes/produces/etc The Guild.

Personally, I get kind of annoyed when most celebrities claim to be “geeky” because I don’t believe it, and it feels like a marketing ploy. (Olivia Munn, I’m looking at you.) But Felicia Day is not only a Real Geek ™, but she’s a smart/talented/accomplished/adorable one.

  25. Daf says:

    <3 The Guild
"Hey, it's the girl from the Sears commercial!"
    /stab
And from many Joss-related adventures, which scrolling up I see have already been mentioned… carry on :)

  26. HeadHunter says:

I never got around to watching this because of some misconceptions:

    1) Figured that if XBox Live waspushing it, they’d want me to pay points per episode like everything else. Glad to see it’s free.

    2) Looking at the god-awful character art from the first season, I thought it would have some equally awfully animated sequences when the characters were “in-game”.

Glad to see I was wrong on both counts. Sat down with my wife (who’s not much of a gamer aside from Zuma and Rock Band) and watched the first season and some of the extras. She loves it. I can’t yet decide whether it’s funny or creepy – maybe because I know people like that. :)

  27. Falling says:

I’m not a MMO player, but I found it freaking hilarious. I came across it before it got picked up by Xboxlive. From the lowly origins of youtube and followed it ever since. (I was trying to find any and all DnD/ RPG comedy.)

  28. Cody says:

I find it awkward, kind of like the office but in a non intentional non funny way.

  29. UtopiaV1 says:

This seems pretty good, might watch some more if i have the time and can pry myself off medeval 2 total war, but those kids crying in the film, surely thats some sort of human right violation? Cos they’re minors, and technically can’t be proved to be acting… I dunno, just seemed a bit weird to me, made me feel uneasy.

Still, i like the rest of the show, miles better than the Office or Pure Pwnage, man they suck, people who can’t act aren’t funny in the slightest, ESPECIALLY when they draw attention to it on purpose…

  30. Pete Complete says:

    x Terrible drawings
x Music too inept for a nursery rhyme
    x Bad acting
    x Female lead with a man-face

    The horror… the horror.

  31. Volatar says:

I am freaking hooked on this show now, thanks a lot Shamus! *pretends to be mad*

I have played a number of MMO’s in the past, but have not for a while.

I find this show both way creepy and funny at the same time. It’s hard to explain…

Sorta like Felicia Day. She… Confuses me. That is hard to explain too.

    She IS rather attractive though…
