Team Fortress 2 Update

Apologies all around to everyone. I heard there was a TF2 update. Normally when this happens, I just need to log in, poke the “reboot” button, and it sorts itself out. The update is completely automated. People kept sending me emails: “Hey Shamus, there was a TF2 update. Sever needs a restart.”

I’d restart it, and wander off. Then the next day I’d get another email, “Hey Shamus, there was a TF2 update. Sever needs a restart.”

Wow. Another one? Okay then. *Poke.*

This went on all week until I actually looked into it this morning. Turns out the server wasn’t needing an update. It HAD updated, and was now crashing. The new version conflicts with SourceMod, which does… some thing important relating to administrating the server that I can’t quite remember at the moment. From the SourceMod forums:

It sounds like Valve changed engine headers without a public beta, without describing the changes, and without an SDK change.

Boo. I’ve disabled SourceMod and I’m in the process of restarting everything and checking it this time.

Thanks again to everyone who donated.

Nice, glad to know things are trying to fall back into place.

Hopefully everything will be sorted out.

  2. bbot says:

Now all we need are the new maps in the rotation.

See also: whine whine whine whine whine.

  3. RPharazon says:

    SourceMod was fixed, methinks.
At least, the Prop Hunt guys said it was, and their SourceMod-using servers are back up, so I’d be inclined to believe them.

“Hey Shamus, there was a SourceMod update. Server needs a restart.”

  4. nine says:

Chaotic server is ranked 666. Ha!

  5. Pickly says:

Ah, I was wondering about that. (Seemed like a long time for them to be down)

Good thing the servers are back up. (though still could use votescramble and some new maps, as other people will almost certainly say.)

Will once again be providing easy sniper and spy targets, while firing blindly, and occasionally killing things. :)

  6. Hzurr says:

Ah, good to see it back up. I got stuck playing with the [MeFi] guys all weekend, and they’ve got a particular guy who plays a sniper that uses face-seeking bullets. Particularly my face.

(Actually, the [MeFi] guys are pretty awesome)

  7. Rutskarn says:

So, did you stick any of the new maps on there? Sawmill and KotH look like fun.

Also: did you get my e-mail about the unbanning process? Now that the servers are straightened out, I should probably tackle that.

Speaking of TF2, I was going through my screenshot folder the other day, found this:

    It amused me…

  9. Davin Valkri says:

    Yay! We’re online again!

Some combination of alltalk and general atmosphere makes the D20 servers so much more enjoyable than some of the others we’ve (and by “me” I mean myself, Phase, some other Steam friends) wandered through.

Incidentally, Shamus, are you adding any King of the Hill maps to the servers? Nucleus in particular is very nice. Also, let me beat Winter to the punch by saying (insert request for pl_cashworks and pl_frontier here).

  10. Spider Dave says:

Ah good, I was wondering what that was about.

  11. Mantergeistmann says:

I like how Chaotic’s server rank is currently 666…

  12. Kdansky says:

Great! Now we only need a lot more maps. I suggest all the new ones, and all Arenas (they will come up once every 4 hours or so, not too bad), and remove the normal CP ones (such as Granary or Well). I would also suggest 20 minutes per map instead of 30, that way you only get 1 round per side, instead of the current 1.5 to 2.

On Arenas: After playing quite a few rounds I have to say they are pretty fun. They teach you how to play as a team and how to play different classes really fast. Even the greenest newbies will learn after two rounds that simply rushing forward through open field is suicide, and that there is more to snipers than point&click. It also teaches everyone to take care of their medics, which is something I sorely miss with many players (that is: everyone who does not play medic from time to time). You also don’t sit out very long, and even if you do so, you can watch people that are better than yourself and learn something from them.
Mostly, this comes from the very good map design and the alternative win strategy (a control point), which will end hide&seek matches very quickly.

  13. RPharazon says:

I disagree with Kdansky over the time limit bit. My low-end computer takes up to 5 minutes to load each map, and maybe 7 minutes in-game to cache everything and get the map flowing smoothly. By the time I’m all set, there’s usually 15-20 minutes left on the map time. Plenty of time, really.

Lowering it to 20 minutes will just anger and confuse me. Plus, all the themed battles (medics-only, engie sentry fights, spy vs heavy, etc) will be broken up every 20 minutes to reconvene with less success.

If anything, raise the limit to 40 minutes and add a fairer rtv function. If people get tired of it, they can rtv. Also, a vote-team-scramble feature would get rid of those pesky steamrolling capers. It’ll be better, consistent gameplay that allows for lower-end computers and themed silly romps.

  14. Dhauzimmer says:

Just to keep things interesting, another update dropped thisevening.

  15. Davin Valkri says:

To Dhauzimmer: does that mean the server needs to be reset again? Because I can’t get onto the D20 servers; something about “enforcing consistency for particles\dx_80” or something like that.

  16. Yar Kramer says:

Well, among other things, it won’t let anyone (apparently) get on plr_hoodoo_final, which apparently got an update. (I tried, just for the heck of it …)

  17. Flopsy_the_rabbit says:

Glad the servers are back up, agree that some new maps would be nice

  18. The Ocho says:

Wow what timing. I am going to pretend my email to Shamus on Sunday caused some of the changes with the maps. If not well don’t bust my bubble let me feel like I contributed somehow. :D

  19. Joe says:

There was another update today, think it opened up an exploit. Had a player on lawful spawning in enemy spawn.

Approx 5:45 eastern, if you can steamban that’d be great.

  20. Heron says:

I dusted off my TF2 install last night to play on Lawful, had some fun :) I expect to stick around for a while…

  21. 6thfloormadness says:

I was playing on the lawful server and 2fort came up, just about burst a blood vessel. I am all for new maps just not that one.

  22. Druss says:

@Joe: That plol fella’ was annoying. Luckily, he was also incompetent ;)

First time playing on the twenty sided server last night, and I have to say it was the best fun I’ve had playing TF2.

Thanks for putting up these servers Mr.Young, and congratulations to the community for being the friendliest I’ve ever met :D

  23. Rutskarn says:

Shamus: Apparently, there’s a water FX mishap on the TF2 servers again. Long and the short of it is that they’re not working–might need to jog them/press a button to get them going again.

  24. Jonathan says:

Last I checked, the servers were both running ALL maps, including KOH & lots of CP maps. Also, Sourcemod is working on other servers just fine, but was still missing, so no RTV.
