Mario Marathon

Here is a group of gamers raising money for Child’s Play by playing Mario, non-stop. They are playing until they 100% the following games:

  1. Super Mario Bros (done)
  2. Super Mario Bros 2 (done)
  3. Super Mario Bros 3 (done)
  4. Super Mario World (done)
  5. Mario 64 (In progress)
  6. Mario Sunshine
  7. Mario Galaxy

They’ve already beaten all of the games, and now they’re going back and getting all the stars. The marathon is now over 50 hours long. Here is the streaming feed of their adventure:

I love how the feed shows both the group playing and the game footage. Last year Desert Bus for Hope ran a similar marathon, but the game and the team were in different feeds. (Although to be fair, once you’ve seen 30 seconds of Desert Bus you’ve seen all sixteen hours of it. Still, I wanted to see both at once anyway.)

They’ve completed 445 out of 599 levels / stars / whatever. What strikes me is that this might not even be the halfway point. Certainly they got all of the low-hanging fruit on their first runs through the games. Some of these bonus levels will be a devil to beat.

Obviously the information in this post will begin going stale the instant I hit “publish” on this post. I don’t usually like to write about things that will link-rot in hours or days, but this was a fun idea, amusing to watch, and for a good cause.

Good luck to the team.

It is a fitting way to raise funds for this charity and I wish them luck on their insane endavour. I struggle to stay awake after a mere 16 hours, so for them to stay awake for +50 is impressive for me.

I do hope they get something proper to eat.

Nice. Is the money all from donations?

    Anyone up for a L4D marathon? >.>

L4D marathon to raise money for families of the zombie inflicted?

  4. SatansBestBuddy says:

Apparently there’s enough people there that they can cycle the tired ones out when they need to.

Watching now, they’re at 119 stars in Mario 64, and are dying repeatedly from falling while trying to get the 100 coin star in that rainbow ship level.

    … I hated that level…

  5. mixmastermind says:

I hate that rainbow carpet ride so freaking much!

  6. Julian says:

I know Mario is iconic and all, but I never saw the appeal of the game, the franchise or the characters.

I’d love to see a GTA marathon. Try one-hundred-percenting ALL those.

My Sunday is officially shot now. I’m obsessively watching this and desperately wishing I could help them play…they needed some help on Rainbow Ride. In my (recent) youth, I was rather a beast at Mario 64.

  8. Adalore says:

I was watching them do rainbow road or what ever that level really is, I never got all the stars on that game, maybe I should some time.

Ether way though, I kept having the thought of “GRAH! your wall jumping… IT STINGS!” while going for those pesky blue coins.

  9. StingRay says:

    No Lost Levels? I’m disappointed.

  10. Christian Groff says:

Actually, a group called the Speed Gamers does this a lot during the year. In a few days, they’ll be marathoning most of the Final Fantasy series for charity, and it’ll last a week starting July 17th at 6:00 PM.
