Silent Hill 2: Plot Analysis

No, this isn’t about the recently-released movie, this is about the much older videogame, Silent Hill 2. I’ve been meaning to write about it for some time. For those of you who are curious about the movie but have never played the games, this might be helpful. Note that there are 4 Silent Hill games now, and the second installment is a bit different from the others. This is a strange game with a facinating plot. The nature of the story is pretty unconventional by genre standards.

Usually the main character in a third-person game is one of two stereotypes:

  1. The classic brooding ex-navy SEAL who doesn’t play by the rules but who always gets the job done ’cause he’s the best even though he has a tortured past and a woman he can’t forget.
  2. An everyman.

But in SH 2, the main character is somewhat of a mystery, and the player has to get to know him as the game goes on. That works, because the main character is a bit confused and is really learning about himself at the same time. He seems like a regular guy at first glance, but as the game goes on our perception of him changes.

I’ll go over the plot for those that have never played. If you remember the game, just click here to skip to my discussion on the characters.

Plot Review

Silent Hill is the name of the town in the series. The town is a bit secluded and small. It has the same layout and same key locations in every iteration, but everyone sees the town just a little different. In each of the games the main characters find themselves (willing or not) exploring the town and find it abandoned and filled with horrors. The particular dangers are different for each visitor, and they are always strange. This isn’t just a “zombie town”.


At the start of the game, James pulls over at a (utterly filthy!) rest stop and takes a long look at himself in the mirror. This is a very appropriate way for him to begin his journey into Silent Hill.

You play as James Sunderland, a man who is grieving the loss of his wife who died three years ago of an unspecified illness. He has a letter which seems to have been sent by his dead wife, saying that she is waiting for him at Silent Hill, where they once spent a vacation together.

At the start of the game James has driven to Silent Hill and found the road into town has been blocked. He stops along the road at a rest stop and decides to enter town on foot. He reads the letter from his wife again.

He doesn’t really ponder why the road has been so thoroughly barricaded. He doesn’t question why he’s come here looking for someone who he knows is dead. Even at this early stage of the game we can tell he’s a little off somehow.

He heads into town through the woods. The closer he gets, the more fog there is. There are strange sounds as he decends the path leading into town.

 

It should go without saying, but from here on are massive spoilers.

Eventually he gets to the graveyard and meets Angela. James is just cutting through to get to the town, but Angela is sitting among the tombstones. Like all converations in this game, their dialog doesn’t really make a lot of sense. It’s like each of them is having thier own conversation. James asks questions but she never gives him a straight answer. She’s not being evasive, they just don’t seem to know how to talk to each other. Is this an effect of the town or are these people just that messed up?

Later in the game he will meet her again and eventually we learn that she had a very abusive childhood. She’s suicidal. Her violent, abusive father was killed and her house burned down. It seems as though she killed her own father, either in defense or out of revenge.

After a very strange converation, James moves on and enters the town itself. It’s daytime, but the town is covered in thick, billowing fog. The town looks more or less normal, but empty and walled off from the outside world. Everything is also a bit out of date. The cars, buildings and signage have a sort of 60′s and 70′s style about them, even though the story seems to take place today. Some time is spent building up suspense and introducing us to the town. Then he meets a strange creature that is sort of humanoid. He grabs a nearby cudgel and fends the creature off. He ends up fighting quite a few of these things during the game.

We deal with some general video-game puzzle stuff and eventually James finds himself in an apartment building where he meets Eddie. The apartment building he’s in is worse than condemned. It’s a horribly stained, rotting structure. The walls are stained with rust (?) and mildew. However, the room Eddie is in looks better than the rest. It’s still no prize, but it doesn’t seem to be engufed in evil, just shabby.

Eddie is in the bathroom, puking his guts out when we meet him. A dead body (human, not monster) is in the same apartment. This isn’t that unexpected, since the building is full of strange and dangerous creatures, but Eddie is defensive and evasive. His constant, unprompted denials that he had anything to do with the dead body leads us to believe that he did.

In this conversation we get our first clue that what we’re seeing is different from what Eddie is seeing. He never mentions the monsters, which would have been a handy and plausible scapegoat for the dead body. The fact that he feels he needs a scapegoat at all is telling.

Eddie seems a little slow. He’s rude and seems to have a mean streak. We’ll run into him again later.

 

After some more puzzles and monsters James finds himself outside and encounters Laura, a little girl who is inexplicably wandering around town by herself. We learn that she was sick and in the hospital with James’ wife Mary at one point. The girl also seems to be here to visit Mary. This is odd. Didn’t Mary die three years ago? This girl would have been very young then. So the girl has come to this haunted town, all alone, in search of a woman she shared a hospital room with years ago? We can tell something isn’t right here, but like all conversations in this town it doesn’t seem to go anywhere.

James moves on, even more confused. He finally reaches the park, which is one of the places he thinks he might find Mary.

 

And he does! Or so it seems. He finds a woman who looks exactly like his deceased wife. Except this woman is named Maria. As they talk it becomes clear that while the two women look alike, they behave differently. While Mary was very reserved and demure, Maria is clearly outgoing and racy. She’s dressed in a trashy red outfit with a miniskirt. The game hints that she probably works as a stripper. She doesn’t know Mary and is a little offended by James’ confusion. So James has come to this town looking for his wife, who he knows to be dead. And in the spot where he thought he might meet her he instead encounters a woman who looks exactly like her, but has a very different personality.

He teams up with Maria and the two of them make their way through town. He’s still dedicated to finding his real wife, though.

Later, Maria is horribly killed in front of him while he is unable to help. Still later he finds her again and she seems to be alright. This pattern repeats several times throughout the game, as James is forced to watch his wife’s “twin” get killed over and over. He’s never able to save her, and he never really gets a sensible explanation when he’s reunited with her later.

Their conversations confuse him. She refers to memories that he shares with Mary, such as the time the two of them visited Silent Hill. She gets angry when he confuses her with his dead wife, even though she seems to be doing the same thing: She frequently confuses herself with Mary!

Alone again, James concludes that Mary must be in the Hotel where the two of them stayed on their previous visit. It’s pretty much the last place in town available, so it’s a safe guess his answers are there. There are more puzzles and he bumps into Eddie and Angela at various points. Their conversations reveal little except the depths of everyone’s confusion.

As he nears the Inn he encounters Eddie for the last time. Eddie has become demented. On their last meeting, Eddie was in a room full of recently killed human corpses, which is an odd thing to find in a town that’s been deserted this long. It’s become clear that Eddie has been somehow slaughtering people for “making fun of him”. James tries to make sense of this and Eddie assumes James is insulting him, “Just like all the rest.” James is obliged to kill Eddie in self-defense.

James at last reaches the Hotel. Note that if the player opens up their inventory and tries to read the note from Mary, they will find it is blank! Hmmm. Now we are forced to wonder: Did it ever really say anything to begin with?

At last James reaches the room where he and Mary were before. Unlike the rest of the inn, the room is in pristine condition, but nobody is there. A VCR and television have been set up, and a lone video casette sits nearby. James watches it. In the grainy, out-of-focus video we see Mary in her sick bed. She seems to be asleep. James enters and kisses her on the cheek. Then he picks up a pillow and mashes it over her face. She tries to fight back, but she’s no match for him. The video ends.

James sits motionless in the chair, head bowed. Laura enters. How she reached the Hotel and made her way through waves of monsters and traps is beyond understanding. She walks in, unscathed from her journey, and asks James if he’s found Mary.

“She’s dead”, he explains, “I killed her.”

And so now we finally see the root of his confusion. His wife was dying, and he killed her. He’s blocked out the memory. The timetable sorts itself out. Mary didn’t die three years ago. She got sick three years ago, and he killed her very recently. Silent Hill has called him here to face his demons. Step one was coming to terms with what he’d done.

We also learn that her disease was disfiguring, and made the normally gentle and kind Mary angry and irrational. Near the end she was demanding and awful to behold.

As we near the finale, James encounters Angela for the final time. She has been falling deeper into despair each time they meet, and at last she gives in and chooses suicide. James can do nothing to dissuade her.

Endings

James is forced to see Maria die one last time, and then he fights an evil incarnation of either Mary or Maria, depending on a few player actions during the game. There are several endings, although only three are important to the plot in my view.

  1. The “good ending” is that after the fight James appears at his wife’s bedside and admits that he killed her out of mercy, but also out of selfishness because of of difficulty of caring for her. She grants him forgiveness and asks him to go on with his life. We then seem him leaving town with little Laura.
  2. After the fight James is reunited with Maria, and the two of them leave town together. As he helps her into the car, she begins coughing. I believe that Maria is sick just like Mary was, and by choosing to take her with him that James is doomed to re-live the awful years he spent caring for Mary. Perhaps this is some form of pennance? Perhaps if he sees her to the end he will feel free of his guilt.
  3. After the fight James is overcome with guilt. He returns to his car and drives into the lake, killing himself so that he can “be with Mary”. Obviously this ending kind of sucks, although it’s difficult to get by chance.

What interests me about this game is the other three people we encounter in town: Laura, Angela, Maria, and Eddie. Note that when we meet these people our perception of the town changes.

Eddie

Years of scorn have filled Eddie with rage. He’s come to Silent Hill to deal with that hate, one way or another. Instead of seeing a town full of monsters, he seems to see it as a place where people taunt and insult him. Silent Hill is a place filled with either stangers or people from Eddie’s own past who tear him down. Perhaps this is a reflection of his childhood. Perhaps his own journey was to see if he could find forgiveness for these people, or to learn what it is about himself that makes him so unpopular. Perhaps he could learn that he hurts others as much as they hurt him. We don’t know what his problem was.

However, Eddie’s jouney is a failure. He lashes out and starts slaughtering everyone. His rampage ends when he meets a real person (James) and is killed.

Angela

When James gets near Angela the town stops looking like a rotting ruin, and takes on a more domestic feel. He’ll find a wall that is actually off-white, with a non-rotting door, both of which are covered in newspaper clippings about house fires and murders.

Angela is filled with self-loathing. She was abused by her father and evetually ended the abuse by killing him. However, this didn’t cure the self-loathing. Like many abuse victims, she had been taught to believe the she was worthless and unlovable. With her father dead, she can no longer hope that one day he will repent, apologize, and say that he loves her. (It doesn’t matter that he was probably never capable of this. From her point of view, that was the one thing she could hope for that would heal her, and by killing him she also killed that hope.)

So she comes to Silent Hill to choose between life and death for herself. The first time she and James meet, she’s sitting in the graveyard. Later she’s in a (more or less normal) bedroom, staring at a knife. James manages to talk her into giving up the knife, but he’s pretty confused himself and is in no shape to offer Angela real help.

Later James rescues her as she’s being menaced by a monster. We see a big monster shaped like (I’m not kidding) a black door, but Angela repeatedly calls it “daddy” during the fight. At the end, she joins in the killing of the monster. This is another clue as to how the town works. She was probably re-living a moment with her father when James came in and intervened. She saw her father, but all we saw was a freakish monster.

On their final meeting, he finds Angela at the inn. She’s standing in a burning hallway. (Note that this is an interesting twist. When you go into another room away from Angela there is no fire, no smoke, and no sounds of fire. The fire only exists when Anglea is near. So she sees the inn buring to the ground, and James sees it as he sees everything else: damp, rotting, and cold.)

James says, “It’s hot as hell in here.”

Angela, “You see it too? For me, it’s always like this.”

He finally makes a try at talking her into choosing life, but it’s hopeless. He hasn’t expressed any real empathy for her until now, and it’s too late to start. She walks into the flames, embracing death.

Laura

When Laura is around, everything looks perfectly normal. We see the town as it really is (or was) with no distortion at all. This explains how Laura survives the monsters and traps. For her, there aren’t any. She sees Silent Hill as a big empty town. She never shows any signs of fear. She’s innocent, and unlike the others she doesn’t seem to be here to face any personal demons. She doesn’t even understand what the others are going through.

At one point early in the game James finds Eddie and Laura hanging out at the bowling alley and enjoying a pizza. This is interesting. In James’ Silent Hill, there is nothing but decay, and the idea of finding food is ludicrous. But for Eddie and Laura the town is normal enough that they can get their hands on a fresh Pizza.

This might have been Eddie’s chance at redemption. Laura spent time with him, which could have been a catalyst for Eddie to help give him some sense of empathy or gentleness, but it didn’t seem to work.

In one ending of the game James gets his act together and leaves with Laura. In the other endings we don’t see what happens to her, but it’s safe to assume she turns out fine. The town is no danger to her, and she can probably leave whenever she wants.

Maria

Unlike the other three, I think Maria is not a real person. That is, in many ways she’s just another monster James has to face. She comes back from apparent death, which isn’t something the other characters ever do. She doesn’t seem to have her own view of Silent Hill, as the town remains unchanged when she’s around and in fact she seems to see things as James does.

She also defies real-world reasoning. It doesn’t make sense that a woman who looks exactly like Mary would just happen to be waiting in the park when James goes there, or that the woman would happen to have such a similar name. And later of course, she has access to some of Mary’s memories.

The only conclusion is that Maria is another demon sent to torment James. The other three characters never see or mention her. In fact, she avoids encountering Eddie and Laura at the bowling alley, prefering to stay outside. It’s possible that if she were to go inside, she would appear differently to the others, much like the way Anglea saw the “door monster” as her own father.

Pyramid Head

There is no question that Pyramid head is a monster, but he’s different from the others. We see PH doing awful, awful things to the other, lesser monsters in the game. Furthermore, every time Maria is killed, it’s Pyramid Head doing the killing. The player usually has a real grudge against PH the first time through the game.

But once we learn what James has done, we can see that PH is reflecting James’ own crime. His repeated killing of Maria is there to force James to face his own murder of Mary.

Another Note about PH is that he is invincible. The player never, ever harms or defeats PH in any way. James survives his encounters with PH by running. At the finale he is forced to fight PH for a while, but in the end PH just stops fighting and impales himself on his own spear. James never really harms him. PH is the Grim Reaper. You can’t beat him in combat.

The question is: Are these other people (Laura, Angela, and Eddie) fellow travelers who have come to Silent Hill? Are they real, or are they more like Maria: Entities created by the town itself to help or hinder James on his way?

It’s possible that they are all pilgrims like James, who have been drawn or called to Silent Hill to confront their past. However, this doesn’t explain how a child like Laura could reach the town on her own, or how she survives. She doesn’t have to face monsters, but she would still need to take care of herself, which is a big job for an eight-year-old.

My brother came up with another explanation for the other four people of the game:

Alternate Analysis

Each of the characters could be seen to represent an aspect of James. In this view, none of these people are real, but are only summoned by James and his guilty conscience as he wanders around the empty town. The wrathful Eddie represents his hated of others. The suicidal Angela represents his hatred of himself. The (to James) sexy Maria represents his love of self, for wanting a new “improved” wife to replace the old. Finally, the innocent Laura represents his love of others.

Note that in this view we don’t need to worry about how Laura got to Silent Hill on her own or how she takes care of herself. If these other people are part of the nighmare world, then they don’t need to make any more sense than the rest of the town.

In either view, James came to Silent Hill to deal with his crime. He was indeed in a tough spot and we can see how Mary’s illness destroyed them both. The disease made her ugly and mean, and doomed her to a slow, lingering death. It destroyed their once-happy marriage, and put James into a position where his loving wife was gone, and yet he was forced to continue to care for what was left of her. It’s easy to see how he was tempted to “put her out of her misery”, with the added benefit of putting her out of his own.

But once the deed was done he was filled with guilt. He hated himself and (I think) wanted to suffer for his crime. So he was drawn to Silent Hill, where the ghosts of the town made him face what he’d done.

Aside from Pyramid Head, the monsters in the game are feminine in one way or another. One is made of female mannequin parts. Another is a “nurse” similar to the gruesome nurses in the recent Silent Hill movie. Another is an armless thing that doesn’t look very female at first glance, but has female proportions (longer legs, shorter torso) and a higher-pitched “voice”.

Finally, it’s interesting that James is able to go to Silent Hill and find healing. Assuming you get the good ending, he leaves in better shape than when he arrived. By forcing him to endure dark horrors, by making him face his crime and understand it, and finally by letting him speak one last time with (we assume) his late wife, the town helped him find the absolution he sought. The town saved him.

The town also never hurt Laura. It menaced Angela, but in the end she killed herself. It taunted Eddie, but in the end it was James that killed him. Taking all of this into account, we can see the town itself, while filled with horrible images, never really killed anyone. Note also that the town seemed to reflect what was in the heart of the visitor. In Silent Hill 2, the town was not truly evil, but simply a dark mirror that would bring out one’s own inner demons and give them shape. Now we think back to the start of the game, when James enters the wreched bathroom and takes a long look at himself in the mirror. Deep down, I think he knew why he was here.

None of the other games had this particular take on the town. In the other iterations of the series, the town is clearly filled with evil powers. I enjoyed this game. It was deep and interesting, and had a very new take on the classic survival horror formula.

    Wow…that’s all I can say. I just today beat Silent Hill 2, and I got the “good” ending. The one where James leaves with Laura. I was curious about some of the reasonings behind the story and characters, and I still am lol. But this has helped me greatly in figuring out, and in turn, understanding the whole story better.

    Wow, like totally wow. Iv played and completed all 4 of the silent hill games several times nw, and silent hill 2 hs always bn my all time favorite. Bt its amazing hw many times u cn play it an find out sumfin new each time, alot of the stuff u’v covered here i alrdy new, bt also a lot i never even realised or noticed before, just like the characters in the game, the players of it see things in a different perspective aswell. iv learnt alot more about the world of silent hill and the horrors and people within by reading ur article, its been totally cool. Its always good to learn new stuff abt the nightmarish world tht hs captivated me an alot of others for many years now. Thnx very much, happy gaming, an keep up the good work.

      SH4 just didn’t have the story that the first 3 had. As fun as it was, the whole idea of the room being outside of the town itself took away from the game. The amazing thing about silent hill should be the characters and their individual concept of the town, not a hole that takes you to scary realms. SH4 was not fluid and, because of that, I view it as the bastard child of Team Silent. Of course, thats how I feel.

      finished the game today and was looking for an in depth analysis on the game and found a great one here :D big thanks ! that cleared a lot of my doubts. i reckon your thoughts on the game to be valid rather than your brother’s because at a point in the game it was mentioned that eddy was also brought to the town cuz he had a purpose too just like james and besides, if the characters weren’t real and just manifestations of james’ imaginations then how can they leave the town with james.

      great game btw. out of all the silent hills i’ve played. this one has to be the one with the best story !

        Well I think they’re both valid, as the only characters James can leave with are Maria and Laura, who according to the alternate analysis represent James’ love of self and of others.
        In the good ending James comes into terms with himself and finds redemption, he’s forgiven by Mary, so he can leave the town with the only surviving portion of his mind: love of others, he’s come to understand life. I have yet to see the Maria ending, so I don’t know about the last conversation between James and Mary, and therefore can’t be sure if James behaves much differently from the others.
        To support the analysis; James acts more empathic towards others after killing of Eddie, his hate of others, and after encountering Angela for the last time he starts to sort out his head and comes to understand the Pyramid Head and understands that he doesn’t need anyone to guide or punish himself, he’s ridden of his self loathing.
        As I played I had both of these theories co-exist, and let the story unfold and explain itself. Both of them have parts that make them more valid than the other, and it’s really up to the observer to decide what to believe in.

        And thanks for Shamus: I had wanted the game for years, and after finding out had made an analysis based on it that hunger grew almost unbearable, I had to play the game before I could read your thoughts of it. So now, after about a year I was finally able to get my hands on it -it’s normally very hard to come by, sucks to live in a back-water country like Finlad- and I think it’s really one of my favourites, so thank you for your analysis and for making me really work for finding this game.

        I believe the. characters are Representatioms of James’ emotions and inner demons. Laura represented the side of him that loved Laura… In that unconditional, innocent way. She locked him in that room once to punish him and constantly said she didnt trust him… That was the side of him that knew he killed Mary. I got the ending where he admitted to killing Mary and that it was partially selfish and she forgave him, but the he drove into the water and killed himself to be with her. However, the leaving with LUra ending just means he came to terms with things and remembers his love for Mary and got back a bit of that lighter, good side of himself… The more innocent side.

    iv never played the game but i understood that well and good job on it the only one ive played is silent hill 4 which is confusing and whats with those flying zombies. i never completed it though

    I am VERY impressed. This has got to be the best and most in-depth analysis of this game I have ever found. Silent Hill 2 was definitely the best of the series and deserves only the best. Thank you so much.
    P.S. THEY HAD BETTER NOT TURN THIS GAME INTO A MOVIE. This game is FAR too sacred to be butchered by the public on the big screen.

    This was indeed very in-depth. But what about the ending where james tries to, assumably, resurect mary with the help of the old gods of silent hill. this ending may be one of the most crucial because silent hill 2 and 4 share a bond, and ths could explain why james was never seen. (he may have been mentioned,its been a while since the 4th one) anyway, this review does show that you truly have done your homework on the game, by far one of the bes sh2 reviews i’ve seen to date. keep up the good work!

    the movie succeeded in butchering the storyline of every game, with the exception of the 4th. it made pyramid head look like an assassin rather tan James’s tormentor, it ruined the “transformation” in silent hill 3. made a mockery of the order, by instead of makig them want to be led by their God to “paradise with bloodstained hands” the director simply said, “hmm, what can i do to make this story even harder to understand…”watches The Crucible”… i’ve got it!

    and let us all, who have ever played th game, remember the most painful film transition of all. this diagram should help.

    forgetting my rant, excellent job in breaking down the compossition of the story. i hoped there was an ending that Angela survived, but alas, we get only the dog masterminding the entire thing. the bastard.

    the section about the monsters (excluding pyramid head) being feminine is interesting, and i never realized it before, but those monsters are also in other silent hill games and i dont think they really apply to the storyline in the way suggested, but it a good theory. the nurses were in silent hill 1 and 3 as well, and the mannequin parts monster (i call them leg-monsters) were also in silent hill 3, and i think also silent hill 1 but im not sure. as for the armless high-pitched monster, im not quite sure if it was in other silent hill games, i cant quite remember seeing it too often

    I liked your views on the characters, but I still choose to stick with mine on the most complex and personal favourite of characters, Maria. She was only ‘born from a wish’, just another like said monsters that only James can see. (Even in Silent Hill 3 during one of the cutscenes with Heather and Vincent, she mentions something about the monsters, in which he responds with, “Monsters? They look like monsters to you?”) Maria was everything James wished Mary was.

    I don’t believe that she was there to torment James. She was just part of the ultimate test to direct him towards the release of his long-held guilt for murdering his wife, Mary. In the Maria ending, she is shown coughing hoarsely as his deceased wife did, most likely telling the player that James has learned nothing from his horrifying stay at Silent Hill. There is supposedly no ‘true ending’ to the creators at Konami, simply the ending a player receives is the true ending to themselves. But I believe that the ‘Leave’ ending where James is forgiven through Mary’s final letter and leaves Silent Hill forever with Laura is in fact the true ending.

    I agree with someone who commented previously, saying that this game played more with your heartstrings then your sanity. It’s possibly the most beautiful and heart-breaking out of the four, and my favourite. The storyline is immaculate. I hope Gans doesn’t decide to butcher this game as well.

    In (belated) response to the scathing review of the movie, deal with it. The scriptwriters and directors worked WITH Konami in the making of the movie, and the guy came up with the idea *after playing the Silent Hill games himself.* So yes, it’s changed.. But do you honestly want to watch a 20 minute montage of Harry wandering around, looking for the key to open the lock to turn of the switch to get into the room to get the symbol to solve the puzzle to get the hint to solve the riddle to open the safe to get the ring to lock the door to get the knife to get the screwdriver to get the other key?

    That aside, overall I’d say you had a fairly good analysis of the game itself, but you seem to be trying to make sense of it all. That’s just it… Silent Hill doesn’t make sense. It’s never even revealed WHY it doesn’t make sense, and is left intentionally ambiguous. Are there really ancient, evil deities at work? Is it because of the remaining taint of Alessa’s psychic powers? Is it the fumes fom all of the White Claudia drug that burned up in the events preceding the first game? Or are the people involved just bat-crap crazy?

    Like “how many licks to the center of a tootsie pop,” the world may never know..

    Oh, forgot to mention. The armless/straightjacket monster wasn’t in the other games directly, but there was a similar creature (the “numb body”) in 3. According to Konami, they convey the image of someone being tormented in a straightjacket of their own making (or, in this case, their own flesh,) representing James’ internal suffering and self-imposed guilt.

    Regarding the overall nature of Silent Hill:
    If I remember correctly, SH2 is the only game where the town isn’t being twisted by Alessa’s presence and the “God” the cult summoned up – so it may be the purest form of the town’s ghostly side that we see.

    Commentary for the original game does make reference to the monsters and the town’s appearance being direct reflections of Alessa’s torment – so perhaps a combination of her innate abilities and her long residence in SH is the cause of her “version” of the town intruding far enough into reality to ensnare Harry and Cybil Bennett.

    Maria is most definitely “summoned” by the twon – both “Born from a Wish” AND the main game pretty much confirm this – she is the Mary that James wanted, there’s no actual denying that.
    The only question is whether Laura is real, though, but I have no actual reason to believe she isn’t.

    We get a glimpse at both Eddie’s AND Angela’s version of Silent Hill, so both of them are most likely real humans going through a similar trial as James.
    The fact that Laura actually interacts with these real people, while Maria doesn’t, leads me to believe she’s real, too.

    And what’s so bad about the “In Water”-ending? I thought it was the best of them all. I disliked “Maria” for obvious reasons because it makes the whole journey pointless, and “Leave” is just too much of an happy ending for such a depressing tale. James is a murderer – how can he just go and live a happy life?
    “In Water” isn’t actually a sad ending, either – in a way, James gets reunited with his true love.

    Wow ! Good analysis, but there is one point i don´t agree with you : all the other people are no “monsters” nor a part of jame´s character ! Because the radio would react when it comes near them. Just like it does with the other monsters !
    I think that the monstes in SH aren´t real ( like you said) they are (that´s what i think) a form of energy and thats why the radio reacts to them. Also the radio reacts to the pyramid head, and he (or it) is a part of james character, just like you explained.

    But i have to admit that it is hard to believe that maria is a real person…

    That´s what a love about SH2 : no matter how hard you think of it there is always another problem coming up !

    I have another interesting take on the story. Some may disagree because of the allusion to Mary telling him to go back and live his life, but I think that James is dead himself. James filled with grief over his murder takes his own life. He however is thrust into a hell or purgatory where he must face his own demons. These demons as your brother said are reflected by the different people in his nightmare. Angela his self loathing, Eddie his selfish hatred, Laura his inner child and purity, and Maria his “love” for his wife. Pyramid Head than represents his murderous act and has followed him to torment him by showing him his atrocious crime over and over again. When they have their final showdown, James is coming to terms with his action and accepting his decision taking responsibility instead of blaming it on the “sickness.”

    This would show why even though we see them leave at the end the still seems to be an aura of eerie fog like they are really still within the world. What happens after is of no concern does James live his attempt, does he die but find redemption, or does he live in this world forever for punishment? Those questions are almost irrelevant to this particular story.

    My only fallacy I find is the final reading of the letter. It seems by what the letter said she was never murdered by him but actually died. “When you read this I am already dead” would mean he wasn’t around when she died.

    It may be a bit late to comment on this, but to me, it seems that Silent Hill reflects the souls of the people in the town. In Silent Hill 2, it’s reacting to James’ guilt, as well as (possibly) Angela’s and Eddie’s, depending on whether they were actually real or not.

    In the first game, as well as in the movie, the town was filled with imagery drawn directly from Alessa’s nightmares. In the third, much of the same imagery returned, but there were notable differences.

    The best idea I can come up with is that with Alessa – a powerful psychic – trapped in the town for so long, it imprinted itself on her. Her mind gave it shape, no matter who was actually in the town at the time; when Alessa’s reincarnation returned years later, it caused similar (but not identical) effects.

    In Silent Hill 2, Alessa has left; the town is still Silent Hill, and still active, but with no dominant force bending it to a particular form it latches onto the guilt and demons of the people drawn to the town.

    As for SH4…heck, I don’t know. I haven’t played that one, but if I had to guess I’d say that Henry is an introvert by nature, and Walter Sullivan (by performing his murders in the area) managed to tap into the same metaphysical morass that powers Silent Hill; Henry’s introversion is externalized until he literally cannot leave his apartment, and (possibly because both he and Walter have been to Old Silent Hill) the otherworldly effects are strengthened.

    Basically, SH4 makes the most sense to me if it’s an “infection” or an embryonic version of a new Silent Hill – created by the combination of someone who is almost literally falling out of life (Henry), and someone actively trying to manipulate the same kind of supernatural whammy that makes Silent Hill the creepy place we know and love (Walter).

    Again, though, all I know of SH4 I have absorbed from Wikipedia, friends who have played the game and other such sources.

      Walter Sullivan isn’t the child of Mary and James, because during the game at the apartments, James finds a newspaper in the trash shoot that details the murder of two siblings I think were called William and Miriam (don’t quote me on that), who were murdered by Walter Sullivan, who claimed to be possessed by “the red devil”. The article then says that Walter commited suicide in his jail cell by driving a spoon into his neck and severing his carotid artery.
      So in SH4, Walter is in fact ressurected by the town somehow so he can complete a ritual to bring back his mother. He actually refers to the apartment of the SH4 protagonist as his mother, not the town, which is why that room is plagued with ghosts and such.

    -I think that your brothers idea does hold up, because the characters are not necessarily representative of a physical entity. Instead they are the part of James that they represent… eg. if he lives with Laura, then it is symbolic that he is leaving the town with the aspect of his personality that is able to still see good in people, as well as himself… try to think of it as a multiple personality thing,,, kinda like Fight Club,, or more accurately the movie Vacancy (that John Cusak flick.)

    Good endings in which James is able to let Mary go:

    Ending where James leaves with Laura:
    James lets Mary go, as he is with the aspect of his personality that sees good in the world. This is the happiest ending because James has clearly moved on, forgiven himself, and is a better person with a better outlook on reality than he first arrived.

    The ending in which James is forgiven:
    Also a good ending, as it concludes with James letting Mary go, and re-entering the real world

    Bad endings where James in unable to let Mary go:

    In the ending where James Kills himself:
    James is unable to forgive himself, and unable to let Mary go.

    In the ending where James takes Maria with him:
    James re-enters the real world, but is unable to let Mary go, as he is still under the company of her doppleganger, It is obvious that while James has a desire to live out his life, it is not a desire to live a happy life, rather a desire for more punishment as he is unable to forgive himself for his actions. (Apparently the actions of the game were not punishment enough for his actions,, only a means to uproot a suppressed memory) Therefore, James voluntarily puts himself through what he was originally trying to escape (the illness),, maybe if he goes through it without killing Maria, maybe, just maybe he might be able to forgive himself. Though this ending is not about eventual self forgiveness, it is about punishment. James is not looking to be forgiven, he is looking to be hurt.
    Though this is the bad ending, I kinda like it, because i like to think after James got Maria out of Silent Hill, he banged her…. you know… before she got too sick… (if shes not real, is that masterbation??) …You know,, cuz it kinda sucks having to go through all of that bullshit with Mary and Maria through the entire game, and not getting action at all…. and if you are going to try and tell me that in the midst of all of the creepyness you wouldnt have liked to see James throw it up in Maria’s guts… you are only lieing to yourself.

    What I think, is that Maria is really just a person created by the wish of James wanting to see Mary. He wants to see her so bad, that he just created Maria, becuause as James says “I was weak, that’s why I needed you”, he needed someone who could replace his late wife. As for PH, I think he represents James, becuase Maria (represents Mary) is always killed at James face, by Pyramid Head (representing James). This shows that the town wants to show him how horrible it is to murder someone who you love.

    Also, as many people did or did not noticed, there are three tablets that is used on noose contraption probably representing that they are supposed to end on noose rope: “Tablet of Seductress” – which represents Angela (probably used to seduce her own father); “Tablet of Oppressor” – James (the one who oppressed his own wife, tried to make her what she wasn’t) and “Tablet of Gluttonous Pig – Eddie (fat and gluttonous, also a sin, beside murders).     1. James is alive. Period. The reason why Silent Hill is hell on earth are explained in Silent Hill 1 & 3. It has something to do with an Acient being sleeping under town. After the events preor to Sillent Hill 1 the power of the Being pour trough the town, twisting it and creating something like different reality. Not all people who enter Silent Hill are evil or deserve a punishment. Some are just in the wrong place in the wrong time.
    2. Pyramide Head represent the guilt of James over killing Mary. The secound PH in the end of the game represent the guilt over killing Eddie. PH did not kill themself. They were destoed when James admited his guilt and stoped lying to himself. When he was in piece with himself, the PH fruit of his obsesion with punishment become needless and impale himself, a manner of killing used by the executioners in the town dark history.
    3. What Angela saw wasn’t a door, but a bed. The official art of this monster is walking bed, covered in rotting flesh, with a large male figure pining a smaller child like figure beneat him.

    It must be said I bought the Playstation 2 just because of Silent Hill 2 (in the same way I bought XBox 360 just for Ace Combat 6). And that I played with a walkthrough available, as I wanted to discover the history almost like an interactive movie, and not spend too much time on combat/puzzles.

    I believe the depth of the story is such because of the designers’s talent, and the fact the designers were from a non-western culture. Instead of serving us pre-digested stories designed to avoid having the players think too much, they worked a lot their background story and the game’s art to make the player both unconfortable and thoughtful.

    And if Jade Empire did awe you because of its plot twist, I must say the moment James sees the video tape and understands what had really happened was for me a GREAT moment of gaming. The music (which is called “True”) goes on and on, the camera turning around James as he digests the news. And it gives time to the player to digest it, too.

    Yeah, for me this is the most tragic game story I played.

    Silent Hill 4 failed to awe me in the same way (it wasn’t the “silent hill” mood/style/theme), and when I learnt a western team of designers/developers would make Silent Hill 5, and that it would be more combat oriented, I just forgot about the game.

It would explain why other people can see her (but the others may see her as somthing els) Eddie may have seen her as one of the people who had made fun of him in the past, but it is unknown wether she made herself known to Angela or not and if not, why?
    But again, there is a hole in this theory. Because if you get the leave ending you will see Laura leaving with James, how can she leave with him if she does not really exist? Which completly flushes this therory down the toilet. THE PLOT HOLE THAT MAY NEVER BE FILLED!!! ;D

    First, let me start by simply saying that these are all great ideas you have. I had my own preconceived notions about what the real story was like and these filled in a lot of questions I had or things that I didn’t find too clear. There is one thing I want to add to this theory that no one has mentioned yet I thought that I remembered Mary talking about. Even though James was severely depressed and guilty about killing his wife, didn’t she say at some point during one of the videos he finds that she wanted him to put her out of her misery? I thought there was a little bit in there where she went off on him and lost her temper, then she felt guilty because of what she was putting him through. I also got this feeling from her letter at the end of one of the “good” endings. She says “Whenever you come and see me, I can tell how hard it is on you.” She concludes it by saying “I want you to live for yourself now.” From the sound of it, she is quite guilty herself about what she’s put him through, so it would make sense…and yes, even if it’s what she’s asked for, James would and could still feel immense guilt over killing her. Just a thought, but I tend to think of it this way and doing so makes the story all the more compelling to me and is what makes it my favorite game hands down. But to throw in another piece of fodder, read or listen to the letter at the end, and when you see the first four stanzas, even though it was written by Mary, it sure sounds a lot like James’ plight. Again, fantastic job on the analysis and great comments from everyone.

    HEY HEEEEEY! Just recently completed the game, and on my first run-through I got the “in the water” ending, which bugged me for some reason. I’d LIKE to try for the other endings, but the thing is, I don’t know what triggered this SUPER SECRET UNLOCKABLE ending, so I don’t know what to avoid! Is it getting ol’ Triangle Face’s Superknife™? Because I wouldn’t really mind passing that up; it’s really only cool conceptually. As a weapon it’s about as useful as, well … as a megaton over-sized knife really would be! GIVE A CHEER FOR REALISM~ when done right, it means that using ridiculously over-powered, over-awesome weapons actually makes combat MORE frightening and tense!

      I have played Origins, 1, 2, 3, 4, and Homecoming through at least six times each and have obtained every ending but one (the bad+ ending on 1). I haven’t gotten far in Shattered Memories because I felt let down in the first couple of hours in gameplay. So, I’ll disregard that. Needless to say, I have had eight years of in depth thought and discussion on the entire series and 2 is still my favorite due to issues that seem to spoken for already. However, I wanted to add my bit since it doesn’t seem to have come up yet. Yes, there is some kind of ancient ‘god’ living under Silent Hill. Alessa woke it up and in her pain and terror, she let lose this ‘god’s’ power… The only ‘accidental’ character in all of the games is Travis, the truck driver who just happened to be passing when Alessa needed help and the ‘god’ responds. Bang. Silent Hill is long longer a ‘sleepy’ town, but a living thing. Of course, Travis gets out after helping Alessa -or does he, since he helps bring Alex to Silent Hill…perhaps he is still a messenger for the ‘god’? Harry mason escapes with the other part of Alessa. However, the town is now alive and anyone who has been there is fair game for Alessa’s nightmare world and also for the ‘god’ under Silent Hill. Notice how you have to ‘go down?’ a lot in these games? James is real and alive. Laura knew Mary, so at some point she was alive. However, Maria is clearly a temptress that this ‘god’ had come up with – most likely by memory retrieved from Mary since she died in the town and her spirit lingers there out of strong emotions. Yes, Silent Hill 2 is a test for James; to see if he is worth a chance. He is sent a letter that is probably real – and most likely written by Laura, Mary’s agent, like Travis was Alessa’s. But with unfinished business, the ‘god’ and the ‘order’ will not rest. The call goes out to Heather/Cheryl. Silent Hill 3 speaks for itself. It is the most clear cut of the stories. After Harry is killed, Heather has nothing left and off she goes to put an end to it. And she does, in her own way. In the fourth installment, we get another spirit not resting so comfortably – Walter Sullivan. SO, to make matters worse, the evil is spreading. Anyone who even drove thorugh the town is not tainted by the thing/god that Alessa woke. Henry is in the wrong place. The place where Walter was born. It also happens that James’ father runs the building. bad luck. Now Henry has to clean up some other folk’s mess. Sympathetic, since he is just cursed by circumstance. So, I was wrong, he is like Travis. I don’t know why there’s so much fuss about Homecoming. No, it isn’t my favorite, but I really do like it a lot. Now we have the evil that hasn’t just spread to people, but now it is begining to devour Shepherd’s Glen due to some nasty doings of the Order. Like with James, you play a character, Alex, who is riddled with guilt and he is there to redeem himself. While not quite as well executed as 2, Homecoming still has that depth of sadness – reflected in the music very strongly – and you just kinda have to go with your gut feeling on what the ‘true’ ending should be.

      As for the monsters, I think there is way too much professional psychology going on here. yes, some have representaions. but some are just what they are. Nurses – from Alessa’s experience, will probably be in most of the games. The hospital is a lively place. Think about 1 and 3 – the only two places to include the school. But the hospital is special to the ‘god’ and Alessa – I expect nurses in every game. Sure, PH is a force that can have some signifigance, but he’s more like a FORCE than some kind of representation.

      I could go on for days, but there’s my bit.

    very good explanation but i would like to add sth if you don’t mind!i, just like your brother, believe that the characters are aspects of James, now every character, has a specific target to achieve (eddie wants to kill everyone who makes fun of him, laura wants to meet Mary, Maria wants to go with James, i think, and Angela wants to kill herself)now from all these characters only Angela succeds her target (SHE KILLS HERSELF)so if those are aspects of james personality, i assume that the real-normal ending to silent hill 2 is the water ending (where he kills himself)

    Very nice plot analysis. I played through all 4 SH, but to tell the truth I never really understand the whole thing. Maybe I was too dragged on the horror, action and puzzles that I forgot the plot.
    I am actually replaying SH 4 now, but it was so long since I played any of the series that I forgot most events and characters. I googled for something to refresh my memories and found your post.
    I agree with you that SH2 may be the best in the series so far. It wasn’t just the horror, the confusion made it complicated but also attracted. I never could tell what was the thing that I made me think SH2 was the best. But now that you said it, I think I have the same feeling: it’s that Silent Hill is not an evil town as it seems, as we always thought of it. A typical game plot would be a hero fighting against evil, and in a way SH 1,3,4 all followed that. But here, what might looks the same at beginning turns out to be wrong, a main character turns out to be not that innocent and the evil turns out to be the sanctuary.
    Thank you for giving me a lot to think about the game I love.
