Destiny Hangout Sept 13: It’s OVER!

EDIT: Thanks for watching. That was fun. We played Destiny for a couple of hours, and then an hour of Counter Spy. I don’t know what will become of the recording. Twitch has decided to stop keeping their archives, so I don’t know how long this one will last. Watch it while you can, I guess.

Original Message:

Josh and Chris will be playing Destiny on their pagan consoles and I’ll be watching via Twitch with the rest of the peanut gallery. The event is this Saturday (September 13) at 11PM UTC. This page ought to convert the time into your local temporal region. The stream will be here when the event goes live.

    Or will it?

    1. Matthew Melange says:

Damn, I missed them criticizing Destiny.

      1. Supahewok says:

        Did they play Destiny?

I was at work until I think 2 hours in. I saw a bunch of CounterSpy but didn’t hear anything about Destiny. Did it crash or something?

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

          No,it was just bland.And boring.And bland.

          1. Supahewok says:

Thanks Daemian & guy. I must’ve missed it by 15 minutes or so. Doesn’t sound like I missed all that much though, I’ve heard those same complaints elsewhere on the internet.

        2. guy says:

They played Destiny, but the gameplay wasn’t very fun to watch and apparently most of the story is only on the website.

          1. Gruhunchously says:

Destiny really is the perfect type of game for this sort of exercise. It’s bland and has lots of problems with the story, but it’s also really pretty to look at. So, watching the stream, I get to look at a lot of pretty visuals while listening to the cast gripe about it in my ear. Best of both worlds.

            1. Eruanno says:

Perhaps that was Bungie’s idea – make the story bland and boring because your friends will be talking over it anyway in co-op.

Then again, Borderlands 2 managed to be interesting anyway… Hmm…

          2. Lord Future says:

Is it worth buying a PS4 to get this game?

            1. krellen says:

It is never worth buying a console for a single game.

            2. Adam says:

Not really. If you have a Ps3/360, it’s more than serviceable. No cross-console (or even cross-generation) play, though.

              1. Lord Future says:

Thanks for the advice. I’ve never owned a console so I would have to purchase one. Looks like I will have to wait for the PC port.

  2. Stratoshred says:

Well that was a blast. All the manshoots you could want, and more! It’s a pity that sleep is needed.

  3. Daemian Lucifer says:

Did Josh remember to save?So that when someone asks me if I know Mark,of the ninja,I can just link them to the stream.

    1. Humanoid says:

I think the way it works now is that it’s stored temporarily by default, but can be saved indefinitely by setting it as a “highlight”.

      1. Humanoid says:

Never thought I’d say it, but thank god for Livestream, at least we still have the fantastic Sleeping Dogs and Monaco streams. Yeah, XCOM and Saints Row are long gone, but still, everything on Twitch is gone.

  4. Thomas says:

Consensus: Shamus plays UT99 for Spoiler Warning. Shamus shows mastery of the 6-rocket RPG. Mumbles comes back for whatsoever reason she cares to.

(A consensus of 2, which is still a simple plurality :P)

    1. Humanoid says:

The likely consequence of this is the return of Cyborg Satan.

    2. Daemian Lucifer says:

It would be great to have destiny back to back with UT99.Destiny cheats with the gravity on other planets, while UT99 gives you both low gravity and no gravity maps. Its also much quicker. And has cooler weapons. And the whole story contained in the game itself.

    3. Bryan says:

Not sure who the consensus was between, but count me as a third. I learned to FPS on Half-Life 1 and various Counterstrike betas, but UT99 was next. So, *for the nostalgia*!

  5. Steve C says:

Is it possible to watch this now that it’s over? When I follow the links it just says ‘offline’.

    1. Muspel says:

Try this link. It has the archived version of the stream.

(I have no idea how long Twitch stores the archived versions nowadays, though.)

      1. Corpital says:

Auto-delete after 30days or indefinite storage for highlights up to 2hours in length, IIRC.

    2. Phill says:

Click on the ‘video’ link at the top right corner. Then you will see a list of recent videos, of which there is only one, which is the one you want.

(If you are on a mobile device you won’t see the videos link unless you find the ‘desktop version’ link somewhere on the left IIRC

    3. drkeiscool says:

If anyone needs a backup, I downloaded the stream. Granted, it’s in seven half-hour segments and out of order, but I have it nonetheless.

      1. Florian says:

I downloaded it, too. I wonder if anyone still has some of the older streams – I’ve never seen any of them and this one kind of whetted my appetite.

  6. Turn based stealth game was mentioned while playing Covert Spy.
I think I recall one, a true classic, or rather I thought I did, what I did remember was the grandfather of all “Spy” games.

Anyone remember Spy vs Spy from 1984?

There was a 3D remake some years later and it has none of the magic of the original, even the classic theme tunes is replaced with something relatively generic and bland.

In the original you have to retrieve documents, and you can set traps for the other agent.
It was a solo game so it was the AI you where setting up.
Traps like a bomb in a drawer, electrifying the door.
It’s so old I barely remember any more about it, I did enjoy playing it way back when.
I wonder how a remake (true to the original) would play today. 2D graphics would probably be best style-wise too.

    1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Uuuuu, spy vs spy!I remember that one.Didnt know it was actually older than me.

  7. A more “modern” Spy game would be NOLF and NOLF2.

  8. Dave B. says:

Unfortunately, I missed the stream. Fortunately, that’s because I was watching Guardians of the Galaxy with my brother. It was fun, in case anyone was wondering.

From watching the stream recording, Destiny does look like a fun game, but I think I’ll give it a miss. Huge download/install size, and I’ve run out of patience with MMO’s.
