Hangout 5/31 – It’s Over!

It’s that time again! We’re having another hangout, and we’ll be playing… Well, I haven’t actually figured that part out yet. Maybe some Civilization 5, maybe some Hitmans, maybe something else entirely. Who knows?

We’ll be mixing it up a bit this time; we’ve switched streaming services to the much more popular and, as it turns out, far better (bet you didn’t see that coming) Twitch.tv. You can find the new stream Here, Here, or There.

The stream starts at 4:30 PM Pacific, which works out to 7:30 Eastern, and 12:30 AM in Britain. See you there!

Edit: Thanks everyone for showing up, we had some great fun assassinating cars and then crashing planes into them. Which… makes much more sense in context. If you missed it, the whole stream is available in several parts in the video section of the stream page.

Hey cool! This will be the first hangout that I actually get a chance to watch!

Looking forward to it. You should play Civ 5!

  2. Humanoid says:

Halp, I tried all three links, but none of them work!

  3. СТАЛКЕР of МЕТРО says:

No chat for me, it seems, blin.

Otherwise, based on some other streams I’ve been watching, Twitch seems like better.

BUT THE CHAT! I’m always left out, blin!

    1. Thomas says:

Twitch chat is always super buggy for me, I have to reload the page a lot of times before it comes up

  4. newdarkcloud says:

This chat is absolutely not working for me.

    1. Ysen says:

That’s still a step up from what’s happening to me. I can’t see the stream at all unless I switch to the old interface, and I can’t sign up for an account because it asks me to “Please correct your phrase in the captcha” when no captcha is displayed.

      1. Volfram says:

I hate Twitch.tv’s new interface and have stayed with the old one. New one lags my computer something awful.

        1. RTBones says:

I have the same issue – the new interface lags like nobody’s business. The old one seems to work much better, at least on my machine. I keep fiddling, wondering if there is a setting somewhere that will make it better. The lag is horrid.

          1. Volfram says:

I have found one setting that seems to help: “Use Old Interface.”

The problem, I believe, is the fixation with HTML5 and “Web 2.0.” Just like when flash and Java started popping up everywhere, web designers are told to make flashy fancy web pages to impress customers, where something lightweight that will run on far more computers would be better.

One day I started reading the technical background on KidRadd. Ever since then I’ve tried to get away with under-stressing computers, and if something will reduce visual quality by 10% but reduce processing time by 50%, I will always use it.

(Bonus points that in KidRadd, the author occasionally managed to IMPROVE visual quality and reduce processing time at the same time.)

    2. I can read it, but even after signing up (I don’t want to use my FB login, thanks) every time I use my confirmed sign-in, it just kicks me back out to Twitch’s main page, un-logged in.

At least the site’s appropriately named.

  5. Gravebound says:

Had to switch to the old interface for anything to show up, the comments didn’t work, and it was super-laggy when Chris was making the comments about it freezing, then it worked when Josh changed whatever it was he changed…for about 20 minutes, then it went stutter-y again. Not that it wasn’t stuttering when it “worked”, but it was still watchable.

The Livestream hangouts worked a lot better (they actually worked, for me at least). Was there some technical reason for the switch?

This is like when video producers flocked to the Blip player and for over a year it never worked for me. They wouldn’t even load. They finally changed whatever it was that was botching things up, because I didn’t change anything about my setup. Or when places started to use Disqus for their comments.

Oh well, at least I got to see the car-in-the-garage-explosion. :)

    1. X2-Eliah says:

“Disqus for comments” Ugh, yes >.< That always fails to work in any capacity, and the extra loop-de-loops needed to get disqus working through the NoScript plugin is also annoying…

      1. Volfram says:

I tried No-Script, but I found that after applying all of the exceptions to un-break web pages that required scripts to look halfway decent, it wasn’t blocking anything that hadn’t already been removed by AdBlock, so I removed it.

  6. anaphysik says:

Twitch is what we use for streaming Disclosure Alert. And it works pretty well for that (at the very least, we have fewer issues with it than we do with Skype…). But whereas it’s good for streaming, it’s pretty much COMPLETE rubbish for chat :<. Like in how it doesn't show people's names in the chatbox…

EDIT: Oh wait, maybe it actually does… hmmmm… that’s not so bad.

  7. anaphysik says:

    RAM THEM!

    1. StashAugustine says:

I actually started playing Warthunder after seeing it, and all I can say is that rammers are the worst thing ever.

      1. 4th Dimension says:

If they rammed you from behind or if it’s one of your too enthusiastic allies ramming you to get to the enemy plane. On the other hand if it’s a head on collision, you are to blame somewhat. ALLWAYS avoid head on passes unless you have some kind of doom cannon like Yak-9T, Cobras, Me night fighters or Beauforts have.

  8. Brandon says:

By far the best part was watching Josh running around gunning down dozens of men with an assault rifle, while wearing a chipmunk costume.

    1. Kavonde says:

I really, really chose a bad time to leave the stream to have dinner.

    2. Ygor says:

And I really should have stayed up longer, but the sleep claimed me around the time Josh managed to piss everyone in barber house.
It’s been fun though, thanks everyone!

    3. Volfram says:

That chipmunk costume just got more and more funny.

The trippiest moment for me was when he then took it off, walked out in a paper-thin disguise, and everybody ignored him because they were looking for a homicidal psycho chipmunk.

    4. BeamSplashX says:

I’m glad I caught Warthunder*, but hearing about Hitman is making me feel like I really missed out.

*This sounds like some kind of awesome berserker fever.

      1. rofltehcat says:

They played War Thunder? Damn, now I have to watch the recording ^^

I only got the best part, it seems: The chipmunk hitman!
Was quite hilarious… what were they trying to do with some of those corpses they dragged several times over skylights?
Went to bed in the break afterwards, so no idea what came afterwards.

  9. X2-Eliah says:

Hm. I might be wrong, but if you are doing all these hangouts, maybe you should use google hangout? I mean, it’s got hangout in the name so you can hangout while running the hangout on the hangout.

  10. Ringwraith says:

I am fantastically brilliant at missing these, even when I can actually watch them.
The timing probably does not help, as “I have something to do at midnight” is weird at the best of times.

    1. Disc says:

This. Now that I think about it, European-hosted hangouts could be another spin-off thing…

      1. McNutcase says:

We need to get Jarenth on that.

  11. 4th Dimension says:

Warthunder yaaaaaaayyyy. Although I have to say you didn’t do much to sell the game you know. Also you don’t need to lead the target so much if you only have cannons.

And the unforgivable, you didn’t play using only Russian reserves + Ishak/Chaika. That is the utter trolling aircraft composition.

    1. Josh says:

It does depend on the cannon, some of them have pretty poor ballistics at longer ranges.

Part of the problem I was having was that streaming was cutting my normal FPS in half, which made everything feel really choppy. If I stream the game again, I’ll knock the settings down a few notches so I can still play smoothly.

  12. Gravebound says:

I hadn’t heard of War Thunder, but in looking it up, the developers worked on the IL-2: Sturmovik: Birds of Prey offshoot to the IL-2 sim. If they are still using the same assets in War Thunder (and it did immediately remind me of IL-2, but arcade-y) then it would explain the overpowered Russian/weak US planes. In IL-2 the US planes were added in later and never refined as well; the F4U is insanely wobbly when firing guns (later patches made it even worse). But I haven’t played BoP, so I don’t know if they readjusted the flight models…

Now you need to fly IL-2:1946, full realism. :)

    1. rofltehcat says:

There is also a FRB gamemode that focuses completely on realism. Maybe you should try that one :)

The flight models are adjusted a bit in the big patches. At one time they completely borked the Japanese Zeros (but that has been fixed since). Some planes are also still using interim flight models (“UFOs” they are called by some forum posters).

    2. 4th Dimension says:

As rofltehcat some flight models of Allied planes are mostly placeholder so they suck somewhat. Also in arcade the climb rates are inflated somewhot so newbies don’t crash as soon as they start climbing. This coupled with the fact that there is lead indicator makes boom and zoom planes (most of the Americans) somewhat weaker but still fun.

On the other hand in historical battle and FRB it’s a whole another thing.

In any case it’s worth getting into if you like planes and flying.

As to Corsair in WT I heard it was a bit crap in arcade, but due to some bugs with flaps it was OP in HB.

      1. Josh says:

It seems they’ve completely replaced almost all of the American fighter flightmodels in the new patch that’s currently in testing. Hopefully this will finally make the P-38 flyable.

Of course they also added Yet Another Russian Jet while all they added for the American tree is a bunch of premium X-planes that, in reality, never got past testing. I want my F9F, damn it!

        1. 4th Dimension says:

          But:
A: Russians really do need higher tier planes before the Migs.
B: their weaponry though it was good at lower tiers is now lacking.

On the other hand I fear that Yak probably won’t help since in real life it was crap and was built only as a stopgap solution (a Yak with a Jumo engine bolted on) before Mikoyan made first true Soviet jets.

I do agree it’s strange they are putting that experimental plane with a push prop in the game.

  13. Galad says:

What did you guys actually play? All I’m seeing on the videos’ page is videos of Tomb Raider, with no voice whatsoever from Josh or anyone else from SW. That can’t be right! Right?

    1. Dave B. says:

I think I made the same mistake. Those must be their Spoiler Warning session, and all their chat is recorded separately. Try scrolling down to recordings made on May 31 and June 1.

  14. Terrence says:

Man, I hardly recognized any of you guys, everyone sounds very different, especially Josh. New microphones?
