Site Theme Updated

  • Fixed issue where the main content would be off-center in Opera.
  • Inserted a bit of a gap between comments.
  • Moved the comment dice a little closer to their related comment.
  • Chaotic Evil text is now slightly darker so it isn’t pure white on black.
  • The gradient in True Neutral is taller, which may fix the slowdowns some people were reporting. I have no way of testing this myself, but I trust you’ll enlighten me if things are still wonky.

Also: I know that Wavatars look goofy on IE6 and the transparent images don’t display properly. The first is way too hard to test and fix, and the second is insurmountable. Sorry IE6 users. The site should work properly, it just won’t look its best.

Drop a comment if you see anything amiss.

The wavatars on chaotic evil are being cropped at the top. FYI.

  2. Jim says:

All three themes look very nice in FireFox 2.0 @ 1280×960

Edit: the “Click your name to Edit your post” box isn’t being displayed correctly in the Chaotic Evil or True Neutral themes. The message isn’t shown (almost like the message was 0 lines long) and I can’t seem to get the edit functionality to work unless I change theme to Lawful Good.

I have used this feature fairly recently (this weekend I think), so I believe this may be a new issue.

Newest Edit: Now the Edit function seems to be fine in all the themes. Must be user error. Sorry…

  3. Ed says:

Wavatars are being cropped across the top on all three themes.

    IE 7, 1024×768, XP

p.s. Thank for writing so well and so often. Keep it up!

I’m not sure what the transparency problem is exactly, but if it’s PNG transparency issues, there’s plenty of fixes you can put in place.

    Here’s one: http://bjorkoy.com/past/2007/4/8/the_easiest_way_to_png/

I wish people would stop using IE6, unfortunately it doesn’t look like that will happen soon :S

  5. Harley says:

    @RodeoClown
The problem with that fix is that it can be really, really slow if there are a number of PNG images that need to have transparency applied. The more there is, the slower it goes.

In my case, it was very noticable applying it to a dozen images, like being on a 56k modem again (and only 2 of them were very large, roughly 600×400, the rest were 180×50 or smaller), and that’s in a compiled help file stored on the local computer.

As of my time of posting, I see 7 PNGs that would have to have it applied. If there were more chatter, it’d be more PNGs to handle, which would make it even worse.

  6. Aufero says:

Not sure why having the text slightly darker should make the Chaotic Evil theme more readable for me, but it does.

  7. Christopher says:

Not sure if I’m the first to notice this, but the dice adding up to the comment numbers is a nice touch. :)

  8. Miral says:

@Christopher: You’re not the first, because it’s been like that for the past year at least, probably longer :)

  9. K says:

I liked the site being off-center on opera. That means I did not have a huge white, empty border at the left. :(

Also: IE6 Users: Get a decent brower!

True Neutral: Still slowdown, and I find it hard to read because it reflects light somewhere, no matter how my display is placed (because somewhere, there is always the perfect grey to reflect the most light possible).

  10. Zanfib says:

Wavatars are cropped for me too.

    IE 7, 1280à—768, XP

  11. ArchU says:

    Beautiful! Bravo, Shamus ^_^

*can now read C-E theme without blindness*

  12. Ben says:

“Fixed issue where the main content would be off-center in Opera.”

Haha. I had assumed it was supposed to look like that!

  13. Tango says:

Perhaps when one changes themes they could stay on the same page rather than returning to the index?

  14. Tango says:

Wavatars are not cropped for me in any theme in Firefox. That may be yet another bug with IE not rendering things properly.

And for the “IE6 Users get a better browser” crowd: some people can’t. I use mostly IE6 at work, because that’s the authorized software. We’ve got 2 machines testing IE7 for compatibility.

  15. Matt` says:

When I scroll down the page, there are horizontal lines running through the comments at regular intervals.

Scrolling up the page, they disappear.

Scrolling by dragging the bar at the side makes the lines closer together (presumably because the scroll wheel goes 3 lines at a time)

  16. Christopher says:

@ Miral: Show’s how perceptive I am, I’ve been reading this blog for at least that long.

  17. Alexis says:

butbut I *liked* the close vpacked comments!

thanks for moving the dice though :)

  18. Dev Null says:

Drop a comment if you see anything amiss.

Don’t know if its intentional or not, so I’ll just mention it:

The above blockquote uses a “cite”, but the citation doesn’t appear in the comments. If it _is_ intentional, its kind of odd that the “cite” is listed in your examples of XHTML that works…

  19. Mark says:

I think Opera 9.5 (the beta) was working correctly since before the fix, but as a big Opera user, I must thank you for taking the time to consider us:)

  20. ryanlb says:

What I’ve seen looks great on Firefox 3 RC1.

And if it were me, on my personal site, I’d say screw IE 6. IE 7 has been out for a long time, and MS is working on IE 8. Let IE 6 rest in peace.

  21. Cadamar says:

Ah… come on… it’s not that hard to fix the alpha-transparent PNGs for IE6. You just have to make all of the images the background of a DIV or something and add the “filter:progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.AlphaImageLoader(src=’ImageURL.png’, sizingMethod=’image’);” attribute to the CSS class.

    Simple. ;p

Oh! And remember that unlike the background-image:url() attribute, if you use relative paths for the images they will be relative to the page that they are displayed in and not relative to the CSS file defining the class.

  22. capital L says:

Lawful Good is still keeping it real. I’m glad you kept it and gave it themed name.

  23. Blurr says:

    Just being picky:

You might want to change “True Neutral” to “Unaligned” in accordance with the D&D 4.0 rules. And if you haven’t tried 4.0, you really need to. It’s awesome.
