Chainmail Bikini Ending

As promised last week, I’ve posted my notes and the plot outline for the end of Chainmail Bikini. The comic stopped right about in the middle of the story, halfway through Act II.

Here is the rest of Act II.
The first half of Act III.
The second half of Act III.

I’m happy with how the story turned out, even though we never got to see it drawn. Anyway, that’s it. All done.

I was very happy to have the ending written out. Too many comics just fade away when stuff happens, thank you for giving the closure. I would have loved to have seen it drawn, of course, but I’ll take what I got.

  2. Allen says:

    I’ll agree with Fargo, but…

How now, Brown Cow? Going to just stick with the rants and the eyecandy caption comics, which, strangely, make me read the rants?

  3. Phlux says:

Jebus…how were you ever going to finish that much material? Wasn’t the plan to do an arc lasting about 18 months? That’s probably twice that!

Too bad we never got to see it. I dug it.

  4. Margaret says:

Just reading the summary had me chuckling. Looked like it would have been a nice ride. Maybe next time!

  5. Saint_007 says:

    hehe… PWNZRED.

Okay, sorry about the 1337 sp33k. But, as the Bard himself once said:

“‘Tis the sport to see the engineer hoist with his own petard…”

You just can never tire of the ways that GM screw themselves over. Or the players.

Unless it happens to you. Then it sucks.

  6. Telas says:

Seeing the story this way instead of in a comic, the “mechanics get in the way of the fun” aspect is much more obvious.

Maybe that’s why it just wasn’t working for me the way DMotR or OotS does.

  7. Joe says:

You know, you kept saying, when talking about posting the rest of the story, that “it won’t be funny”. You seriously underestimate your own humor potential. Quite a few parts of the story had me literally laughing out loud.

And I *really* appreciate you posting the ending. It’s never fun for a story, any story, to just end in the middle. I would dearly love it if, for instance, TV shows would make a commitment at their pilot that the overall plot outline had been written, and was in escrow somewhere, and that if the show was canceled, it would be released. I’d be a whole lot more likely to commit to watching a show if they’d do that.

Sorry for the tangent there, great story, thanks for posting it!

  8. Reluctant DM says:

Loved the ending Shamus. Too bad it didn’t work out as a comic. I look forward to your next endeavor!

  9. Woerlan says:

Just read the whole summary. Too bad. It would have been a really funny comic. And the ending reminded me of one or two adventures I ran myself, including one where the Big Bad got killed by having a hall carpet (one I mentioned only casually as part of my flavor text) pulled out from under him.

    Good times.

Best of luck on your next comic venture. Yes, that’s a more than subtle hint that I would love for you to make another.

  10. Froody says:

Not funny? That was pure genius there, in my opinion… even without the visuals, the plot was really clever and I loved all the factors playing into Deuses demise.

  11. Nazgul says:

Awesome. Thanks for taking the time to write those up, I had some big laughs!

I was a little surprised that some people felt that the rapid deaths of Marcus’ characters was mean-spirited. Was it the same people that felt you were being mean to console gamers? :D

  12. kmc says:

Ha ha, great ending! Thanks for posting.

  13. Joshua says:

I usually let minor stuff slide in your big posts, but this one really stands out…

“I'm happy with how the story turned out, even through we never got to see it drawn.”

  14. Matt` says:

Someone should draw this… it wouldn’t be the same as the “real thing”, but there’s got to be someone who’s good at drawing stuff but can’t write decent storylines.

    Can anyone here art goodly?

  15. MintSkittle says:

I’d like to think that Topaz didn’t die, but landed on Josh’s character, preferably on some part of him not covered in spikes. Josh’s character would be stretched nearly to the breaking point, leaving both with about 1 HP. This way Casey’s plan for a TPK fails completely.

  16. Alan De Smet says:

As with others, I hate reading a long form comic, be it print or web, and having it cut off because the series is cancelled for whatever reason. This is way better than simply nothing. Thanks for taking the time. While it would have been better in comic form, it was still amusing in written form. The ending (“YOU CAN’T CAST WHILE FALLING!”) was especially good, and having Baaj land on the spear the icing.

  17. Faith says:

I like how you fired all of those Chekhov’s Guns. Nicely plotted.

  18. ravells says:

Thank you! It would have been a blast to have seen it drawn, but it’s still so nice to know how it would have ended.

  19. Sec says:

I haven’t got much else to say than thank you for posting the end. I liked having some closure, and did find it funny indeed.

  20. Craig says:

I loved it, just wish it could’ve gotten drawn out. I encourage more story-driven projects in the future, you seem to have a talent for them.

  21. Shawn says:

    Phlux Says:

“Jebus…how were you ever going to finish that much material? Wasn't the plan to do an arc lasting about 18 months? That's probably twice that!”

And Shamus left out all of the half formed possible side jokes we had floating around, like the super deadly dungeon that kills off Marcus’s character instantly and then everyone leaves, or meeting Casey’s wife or Marcus’s ex.

  22. Lanthanide says:

It looks like the un-finished part of the story would have been many times better than the part that was actually finished. I thought it was dragging on and seemed pretty boring, but the rest of the story looks great.

Perhaps my problem is the translation from the page into a comic, somehow saps all the fun out of it for me? On the other hand, I started reading DMotR since almost the very start, and checked back every day for new comics.

  23. gottasing says:

Thanks for giving us closure-that was hilarious!

  24. FlameKiller says:

i was wondering if you were ever planing on having Steve come back.

  25. Ondo says:

I join the thanks for posting the CB story notes. I liked reading them, I’m still grinning.

  26. ryanlb says:

That was awesome. I too, am sad that we didn’t get to see it in comic form, but it was still a very entertaining read.
    CB will be missed.

  27. Gmbeowulf says:

Has the comic been permanently taken down? All of the links are dead.

  28. J says:

Seriously, anyone know what happened? I would really like to reread this. It was one of the best dnd comics on the net. Is it going to be published? I really want to know why it got taken down.

  29. Viktor says:

Same as above, wondering what happened to it. Just an e-mail on the subject or something, I’d like to re-read it. I still have fond memories of thrown pigs and polyamorous Orcs.

  30. The Beerslayer says:

Add my voice to those who missed out on CB the first time around and would love to see the existing strips posted somewhere, imperfections and incompleteness and all.

  31. Thul Dai says:

    + 1

Any way we (that missed out the first time around) could get to see CB? Shouldn’t be too hard to post it somewhere now should it? Legal issues about who is allowed to host/post it?

  32. Simon says:

    Hi Shamus,

Can you update these URLs? I’m reading all your old posts, and I can’t seem to find the correct links. Thanks in advance, and thanks for all the wonderful stuff you made over the years. I really enjoy it all, from your D&D campaign that started it all, to all the nitpicky reviews all the way to good robot!
