  1. MediocreMan says:

Kinda disappointed he’s not playing Crusader Kings… :(

but civ 5 will do too! :)

  2. James Pony says:

Finally I have an excuse for staying up way later than I should.

Not that it ever stopped me from doing it anyway.

  3. paronomasiac says:

Of all the nights to be busy with class…

Is anyone recording this for enjoyment later?

    1. Merzendi says:

Hopefully the video will be saved on the channel, as it normally is. But then again it might not be, like most of the after party from one of the other times.

  4. GM says:

I think Half Life 1 is like Portal as in Puzzle game,i´m playing it now am at the Rail and am lost on the rails.

Legend of Grimrock is awesome and i defeated the end boss.

I got Fallout New Vegas but haven´t downloaded it yet.

Portal 1 is awesome i only got stuck 3 times,Portal is excellent and i got stuck about 16 times.

Left for dead2 i find similar to Killing floor as in same genre as in sub genre.

  5. SleepingDragon says:

Just stopping by to say this was a lot of fun and I’m really glad I was able to stay till most of you guys were gone this time. Will eagerly await the next one.

  6. Daemian Lucifer says:

Wow,Josh won diplomatically…..And without fighting anyone(well that with napoleon doesnt count)…..That is just mind boggling.

Also Chris, will you be talking about spec ops the line in errant signal?

    1. Klay F. says:

True Story: after finishing my first playthrough of Spec Ops, I immediately started a playthrough of Assassin’s Creed: Brotherhood. The insane amount of casual guard murder in AssCreed actually made me a little queasy, and I had to quit playing. Afterwards, I thought to myself, “How the hell did I ever find this enjoyable?”

I’ve never had a videogame affect my enjoyment of other, unrelated videogames before. So +1 to Spec Ops in that regard.

    2. Chris says:

Well, the next episode is going to be the one on ‘fun’ that I’m going to record tonight and edit this week, so it’ll be a while before I could get around to it. That said, I don’t think I have much of a choice! Honestly I’ve had enough requests to look into it that I pretty much have to, especially since it went on sale today.

I am a little wary of doing two super-depressing game reviews back to back, though!

      1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Wait, you are going to do a depressing video on fun?Cant wait for that one.

        1. Chris says:

Hah! No, I was referring more to Max Payne. All the big games seem crazy downers, this year!

          1. Daemian Lucifer says:

Well, heres an idea:If you are doing an episode on fun,why not do one on the fun of being depressed?Max payne, the line, walking dead, all offer enjoyment in feeling miserable. And they all came out so close, and just when feeling shocked and depressed became a cheap shtick for aaa games like modern warfare and me3.Granted,not all 3 do it as well, but thats because max payne doesnt really blend its gameplay and its story.

  7. HBOrrgg says:

Looks like it’s winding down. Best part was the quote: “Wow, looks like everyone in the stream is really eager to see a nuclear apocalypse.”

  8. Tvtim says:

over 4 and a half hours of Civ 5 and no real combat, just diplomacy…

A bit lame but the conversation was good

  9. Lame Duck says:

You know what, I take back my previous comments. Josh should only be allowed to stream Civ 5 games when he’s playing it on the hardest difficulty. That was not a very interesting game to watch.

The conversation was still fun though.

Also, Josh, stream some DotA 2 with Randy.

  10. Aldowyn says:

So I wasn’t paying attention to the game at all, but we certainly had some interesting conversations. Randy and Josh apparently got up to some pretty crazy hijinks in SWG…

Had fun talking to everyone, let’s do it again some time :)

    1. Vegedus says:

There was a game going on?

  11. slipshod says:

Once again, had an excellent time. Thanks, guys! Off to read Randy’s Legolas fanfic now.

  12. Gruhunchously says:

Francis Navy is coming for you. OH GOD!
That was the best part by far.

Also, Team Josh and Team Randy. Where do you stand?

    1. MediocreMan says:

Lol, and in a couple turns w/ 2 ships he sunk most of the french fleet. Not bad, not bad at all.

      1. Aldowyn says:

Oh that’s what happened to the fleet? I missed that part. The introduction of said fleet was pretty funny though.

Randy: “Is that a french fleet off your coast?”

Josh: “WTF? (well he said it all out) Where the heck did that come from? I guess I better build some ships…”

Paraphrased since I do not have perfect memory…

Also note that the french had been hounding him the whole time and I’m pretty sure there were by far the most powerful military force in the game.

    2. JPH says:

“Also, Team Josh and Team Randy. Where do you stand?”

OH GOD, I forgot about that.

      1. Newbie says:

BellaJPH you have to decide quick!

  13. JPH says:

I think that went better than last time. Felt less like gaming and more like conversation, and we actually interacted with the people in chat this time. It was also nice that everybody was actually there at one point or another this time.

Though it is funny that a large portion of it was just me, Josh and Randy.

    1. Tvtim says:

It may have been just you three, but it was still fun. Random conversations are always better than planned out ones, especially when you interact with the chatting peoples.

      1. JPH says:

Glad to hear it! I was anxious about my ability to provide funsies.

    2. Vegedus says:

Wait, is this the one who spouted heresy about never playing single player games? I can’t keep track anymore.

      1. Josh says:

        No, that was Randy.

      2. JPH says:

I was the one who spouted heresy about the modern games industry not totally sucking.

        1. Daemian Lucifer says:

I get why you think that its just nostalgia talking, but its really not.You think that because games today have better mechanics, its wrong to say that games of old werent better. But what people like Shamus and Yahtzee are saying with “games were better” is that developers used to do as much as they could with the tools at their disposal, and therefore good games of old have polished then available mechanics as much as they could.Meanwhile, developers of today dont really have time to use all their tools enough to get even accustomed, therefore the better mechanics in games we have today arent as polished as they could be.

Let me try and clarify that with two examples:
Jumping.Mario practically perfected jumping in 2d platformers,so when you wanted a good jumping mechanic, youd simply try to emulate that in your game.
Cover shooting.Games are still searching for a way to polish this mechanic so that it does what its supposed to do.But it still feels like its either too sticky,or too loose,so people end up hugging every wall in their path while going from A to B,or slipping out of cover when they dont want to.And thats not even going into whether the button for the cover should be just for that,or for some other action as well. And yet, even the good games today(like the line)are using this unpolished mechanic to carry them, only to have it drag them down in the end.

  14. wheals says:

So Josh couldn’t be Theodore so he was Theodora?
(I heard Theodore at first and burst out laughing.)

  15. Mephane says:

I know this is off-topic, but I just realized another design change to this website, which appear to have happened yesterday or today; the comments are in rounded-off boxes. I like those. Though I am really wondering how those were pulled off. Is that a recent HTML or CSS feature that I don’t know about?

    1. psivamp says:

My first thought was a set of transparent images, but that’s a really low-tech solution that I used 13 years ago or so. Also, stuff gets too close to the corner for that to work with the way I did it as a teenager.

  16. Zagzag says:

I stayed for the first four hours, until time zones got the better of me. It was a lot of fun, so thanks guys.

  17. newdarkcloud says:

I had to dip out for about an hour, but it was a great tme and I look forward to watching the recording when I get back home. I got Randy to notice my puns. He was not very Randy about them.

    Huzzah!

  18. Eärlindor says:

I missed the first event and was very eager to join this one. Then I forgot about it and didn’t remember until an hour after it started. XD

    It was a blast though!

  19. Paul Spooner says:

So Shamus, since you had to go a bit before the halfway point, have you gone back and watched the rest of the hangout? I’ve enjoyed listening to it run while doing other things.

On the topic of raw HTML “text and pictures” websites… that’s pretty much my website. I think someone other than my mom looks at it, but that may just be mum using IP masking.

“Basically just playing in… that one mode” It’s called Creative mode.

On character appearance based on stats in Fable: sounds like they failed to apply the “ad infinitum” test. Also, I thought the giant, scarred, white-haired old man looked totally awesome. I want to be that guy when I grow up.

Since the dialog is almost completely de-coupled from the visuals, this seems like an ideal situation for a podcast.

Also, I recall something about a “player character” article, but I don’t want to go back and find where it was mentioned. Who wrote it, and/or where can I find it?

    1. Mike says:

Just got around to watch the stream and wanted to sign my name below this comment.

I’ve started watching the video and, not being much of a fan of civ, realized that it’s audio that I’m after, and there are much more convenient ways and times to listen to it than behind the laptop.

So +1 for the podcast idea – would be great if audio track was available separately, if it’s an easy thing to do with your setup.

To be fair, it’s usually not that hard to extract audio from just video (although livestream seem to have changed it’s playback setup recently, so I wasn’t able to find an app to download video from it), and it’s fairly straightforward to record just the stream from flash plugin (at least with pulseaudio on linux, which I ended up doing), but it’s a lot of redundant work which some people might find hard to do.

Writing the last paragraph, actually got an idea that maybe you (as in “you guys”) can give a permission (cc/as-is license or something) to redistribute the audio track, so I can, say, upload it to some cloud storage and link in the comments?

  20. Dante says:

I totally forgot about this, but then again, no one tweeted about it….

  21. LadyTL says:

Hey Shamus, since he didn’t record you talking about how you felt about The Secret World are you going to do some articles abut it?
