For Steve fans, Shawn and I have made his humorous “4 20” shirt available on Cafepress.
If you don’t get the joke, this may help explain things.
Why Batman Can't Kill
His problem isn't that he's dumb, the problem is that he bends the world he inhabits.
Batman: Arkham City
A look back at one of my favorite games. The gameplay was stellar, but the underlying story was clumsy and oddly constructed.
What is Piracy?
It seems like a simple question, but it turns out everyone has a different idea of right and wrong in the digital world.
Self-Balancing Gameplay
There's a wonderful way to balance difficulty in RPGs, and designers try to prevent it. For some reason.
Trekrospective
A look back at Star Trek, from the Original Series to the Abrams Reboot.
I’ve read all of DMotR and up to current on Chainmail Bikini, and somehow, I’m missing the humor of the shirt…
Somebody want to help out a poor, dense, sleep-deprived and humor-challenged nerd?
Deoxy: It’s a reference to his character often looking stoned, ie Stonergorn, because 4 20 has slang connections to smoking cannabis(try the wikipedia link in the post for more info).
Jeez, I mention in the CB forum that the shirt cracked me up, and the next thing I know there’s one for sale. The wonders of the internet! ;)
Dude!! I always thought that 420 was the police code for smokin’ dope.. 1 Adam 12.. 1 Adam 12.. 4-20 taking place at the Circle K.. see the man..
sigh….
I’ve already bought the shirt.
And 420 used to be slang for “lets smoke”. Once everyone figured that one out, it moved further. However, the 420 tradition sticks. Every year, in Boulder, CO, on 4/20 at 4:20, about 50000 people gather and have a huge festival of weed. I swear, you can see the cloud from miles off…
Dude, I just blew my saving throw against getting totally baked!
I will now spend the next 2d6 rounds consuming all my rations and trying to explain how the Astral and Ethereal planes interact with the Prime Material.
That’s a really short high. :p (2d6 rounds = 36-72 seconds) More like 1d6 hours.
Maybe you should add a NSFW to that link. I don’t know why I assumed it was safe, but I really don’t like the fact that I now have an entry to a cannabis culture wiki on my corporate proxy server’s history.
99% of the Internet is NSFW, what are you doing reading blogs at work anyway?
For a moment I thought the t-shirt was referencing an iconic piece of Aussie “culture”.
There is a brand of meat pie that is famous in Australia called ‘Four-and-Twenty’ (as in the nursery rhyme, Old King Cole’) that is consumed at games of Australian Rules Football, school playgrounds and very few other places. They’re best described as miscellaneous meat products gristle gravy, wrapped in pastry and are therefore, due to the inverse relationship between palatability of ingredients vs taste, delicious.
Shamus… how about that desing in a golf shirt.. I haven’t golfed in a while.. but I had a Gumby on Pokey “polo” shirt .. nobody really noticed.. … I think a 420 golf shirt would rule.. er.. be the bomb.. uh.. be really neat.. aww hell.. If I knew how to say that the thing would be really kewl.. then I wouldn’t be a nerd…
oh.. and ’bout Casey Jones.. he was high on somethin’ else… trouble ahead… trouble behind…

Hi- I have been searching the web for about an hour. My Mom wants to buy a men’s XL polo shirt like the one DAVESNOT was describing Feb 19th, 2008. Does anyone know where I could purchase the Gumby on Pokey “polo” shirt? Any help would be appreciated. email me at: [email protected] Thanks.
That shirt would make a good gift for the “smoking gamer”. Fortunately, I only know one. I don’t think I could take a whole room full of them.
My brother-in-law was always re-setting the broken clock on his parent’s oven to 4:20 Meh. I suppose it’s hilarious when you’re 14, but once you graduate from college…
I have a stoner friend who used to play D&D. I think I just found his birthday present.
CuChullain: Yeah, the 4 20 pies were what I thought of first too. I figured it was too good to be true, despite my love for those pies.
That, is a great shirt. Only complaint: the d20 looks rather strongly like a side profile of a d6. Other than that, though, I’m pretty amused. Don’t know anyone who would actually *buy* one… around here, pretty much everyone knows what 4:20 means, but that doesn’t mean I know anyone who actually, let’s say, celebrates it.
Also, when did you add the ability to edit posts? That’s pretty shiny.
Now someone will have to update that Wiki page to add this blog to the “References in Popular Culture” section.
Then someone else will have to edit that to say that this site, while certainly worth the read, isn’t “popular” culture.
Then someone else will have to edit that to say that it is too “popular”, but that there’s no “culture”.
Was the Wikipedia link in the post from the beginning? If so, I surely did not notice it, but yeah, it explains the joke perfectly.
Stonergorn, indeed. I have managed to avoid any other movies with that particular actor – I wouldn’t expect to be missing anything.
Viggo Mortenson is actually a great actor. Check out The History of Violence and Eastern Promises especially.
I think I like it best in the “military green” color… Too bad they don’t have it in hemp! ;-)
In reference to the Gumby & Pokey shirt, it used to be offered long ago in the Signals catalogs (or ones very similar to those). The ones I remember were either pink or white shirts. From a distance, you would think it was the Ralph Lauren Polo logo with the polo player on his pony. Up close, of course, it was Gumby riding Pokey with a polo mallet in his hand. I’m STILL trying to find one.
