TV Tropes, Hema, and Limbo

A link dump post:

I was cited for the “Rocks Fall Everyone Dies” entry at TV Tropes. Kind of amusing to be viewed as being an authoritative source.

This is tremendous fun. It’s not what it looks like at first. Just go there and wait 10 seconds. Warning: Sound.

This is about the most frustrating teaser site for a videogame, ever. The game is called “Limbo”, and just the fleeting glimpse of the gameplay offered by the site has caused me to crave the thing, the way a junkie might crave the jab of a needle. Great. Mission accomplished. That’s what teaser sites are for, right? So… What platform is it going to be for? When does it come out? This year? Next? Is this a console title? PC? Mac? Flash based? The Atrai Jaguar? What? Who is making it? Is that real gameplay footage, or just really fancy animated concept art?

Sigh.

It seems to defeat the entire purpose of having a teaser site. It creates a desire for the product, sure. But then it doesn’t give you anything to do with the desire. You just wander away and maybe come back in some months and see if anything has changed. There isn’t even a “last updated” date on the thing. For all I know the game was abandoned last year and they never bothered to take down the site.

Limbo looks like a flash-based game to me. But what do I know?

    Welcome to troperville Shamus!

  3. Freaky Dug says:

I found a blog post about it from late 2006 (http://blogs.warwick.ac.uk/johndale/entry/limbo_game_footage/) so it looks unlikely the game’s going to ever appear. It’s real shame because it does look amazing.

  4. Ryan says:

That Limbo footage has been floating around for quite a while, sadly. And the newsletter signup link doesn’t appear to do anything.

  5. Evilllama says:

That’s really a bummer. I was getting excited.
The concept art is enticing as well.

I really like the misty greyscale theme.
It makes the game seem stark but surreal.

    limbo looks so cool
try watching it at the same time as you listen to “On Call” by Kings of Leon… idunno why but it really seems to fit it well

  7. corwin says:

This might be old news to you, but you’re also quoted under Random Number God over there.

  8. Phlux says:

Seems to be a dead project. Hasn’t had any news since 2006, at which point they were hiring a C++ programmer.

While I was looking for info, I found this little gem. The idea is that you are a copyright enforcer on the bittorrent network and you fly around blasting seeds, packets and file shares. The interesting part is that the data is actually from live torrents scattered around the web.

    Ender’s Game, anyone?

  10. Phlux says:

Shinjin: Instead of the M.D. Device, though, they use Cease and Decist letters.

  11. Rubes says:

Ah, too bad about Limbo. I had seen that trailer a loooong time ago, and was impressed, but I had forgotten about it since. And never heard anything from the newsletter.

  12. Allerun says:

According to this there is at least one programmer still on the project since May 2007: http://www.linkedin.com/pub/4/662/B38

    Also this: http://www.spiludvikling.dk/viewtopic.php?t=2548&highlight=&sid=ddbca5a5de1f616a7adc6e63acab5193

I guess you could always sign up for the newsletter.

  13. Davesnot says:

That first link (not limbo) was cool.. .and I really don’t wanna say this.. because I know how much you hate it… but… well.. my Mom sent that to me last week.

The limbo thing .. never seen it.. would love to play it.. maybe somebody will steal the dead concept.. the black and white is part of the appeal!

Has anyone sent an e-mail to ’em??

  14. Tuck says:

That Limbo video makes me think of Knytt and some of the modules/stories I played.

Well worth a look at: Nifflas’ games

  15. ArchU says:

Shamus, congratulations on the publicity =p

My guess is that limbo is either a dead project or produced by an exceedingly small company since none of the major gaming sites has any information on it, not even previews. Even vaporware has previews.

  16. Malkara says:

I know I’ve seen Limbo before. Somewhere big. Might’ve been X-Play. Dun remember.

  17. ngthagg says:

Shamus: Curse your black heart for linking to the TV tropes. Do you realize how much time I can waste there? If it weren’t for the fact that I’m browsing in tabless IE6, I’d still be there, attempting to read the entire thing start to finish.

  18. Varil says:

Maybe some courageous soul could email that programmer…?

  19. Thijs says:

How did you get your hands on a advertisment for a dutch shopping mall?

  20. Takkelmaggot says:

For some reason, the Limbo concept art says “Samorost” to me. That’s a good thing.
