A Buncha Links

I never saw this before. Batman: MY PARENTS ARE DEAD! Hilarious.

Someone is toying with the idea of making another RPG comic along the lines of DMotR and Darths & Droids, but using 8-bit sprites: The Returners. I’m not familiar with the game being portrayed so a lot of it went by me, but it’s an interesting idea.

Thanks to Time Well Wasted for this Review of Chainmail Bikini.

Thanks to ChattyDM for weighing in on the “next game system” issue I brought up earlier this week. That was one of the most interesting threads we’ve had here in a while. I’m pretty sold on Savage Worlds, although the rest of my group is still all over the place and I doubt any degree of pursuasion will get them all going in the same direction.

The Comic Irregulars continue to take the gibberish plot gifted to us by George Lucas and twist it into something that makes sense. An amazing accomplishment to be sure.

Over the past couple of weeks Cineris has been throwing links my way on a regular basis and posting in response to stuff here, but for whatever reason Google Blogsearch hasn’t been telling me about it until a couple of days ago. (And I’m waaay behind on my blogreading in general. To the point where it’s almost better to give up on everything I missed in January and start anew.) Rather than burying my belated links back to him on a bunch of old posts, I’ll just sort of point you in his direction with the note that some of the stuff discussed here is also discussed over there and maybe you’ll want to check that out or something.

FYI Shamus, ‘The Returners’ is Final Fantasy 3/VI. Honestly it was the first thing that came to mind when I saw the title of the comic and I was confused into thinking it had to be something other than that by your comment of being unfamiliar with the game.

Also: You’re making quite the statement when you say you’re wholly unfamiliar with Final Fantasy 3/VI. The game is near universally acclaimed as the best JRPG in existence or at least in most people’s top 5 when you ask them which JRPG’s are their favorites.

  2. Shamus says:

Amstrad: I missed ALL console gaming between the Atari 2600 and the PS2. Final Fantasy X was my first encounter with the series. (I’ve gone back and played VII and half of VIII, though.)

I didn’t even own a television for most of the 90’s. Console gaming wasn’t even on my radar.

  3. Joshua says:

It was certainly my favorite of the FF series, anyways. Seven just never clicked as much for me, much less eight, and I haven’t played the ones since then. Nowadays, though, I’m sure the graphics limitations of the game in addition to the limited interface might limit the enjoyment of replaying.

  4. Corie says:

Hey ya Shamus, thanks for the link back, glad you liked the review.

Chiming in on the Final Fantasy thoughts… I’m rather attached to FFIV, I think it has one of the more in depth story lines and there’s just something about the “spoony bard” comment that makes me grin.

  5. Mari says:

Nice to know I’m not the only one that sat out the Nintendo revolution. I apparently rejoined the console world just a bit before you, though, with my great love for the panned and forgotten 3D0.

And thanks for the game system thread. It was a very enjoyable discussion even though I didn’t weigh in. I learned loads and am looking into some of the systems mentioned. I even have the flexibility to try some of them out since I’m teaching one of my munchkins to play so I can break her in on any system I want while she’s still too impressionable to resist.

  6. Amstrad says:

Shamus: Fair enough. With the birth of emulation however and the relative ease of access to SNES Roms, getting your hands on a copy of FF3 for the SNES should be a cakewalk. Barring that it was re-released for the PSX with all sorts of extra cutscenes added in. Honestly you owe it to yourself, it’s a far superior game when compared to VIII-X, though I’m not going to comment on its strength as compared to VII, those are fightin’ words to most folk.

  7. Dragonbane says:

The best way to get gamers on the same page is usually: “I’m going to run a Savage Worlds game starting next month… unless someone else is offering to GM a campaign?” That last phrase is disturbingly effective, at least in the groups I have played with. :)

  8. Joe says:

I just recently bought FF3 for DS, going to see how it goes. I played part of 2, but once I got lost in the desert I said ‘screw it’ and tossed it. Never made it through 7, once I got off the boat I just got sick with the game.

  9. adam says:

man, I forgot how awesome the Final fantasy numbering system was before seven. I mean, theres one, then two and three which were not released stateside until recently, then 4, which was fist called 2 in the US, 5, which was also not released in the US until recently, and 6, which is also called 3 in the US.

The whole thing just makes a whole bunch of sense.

  10. Avaz says:

I’m with Amstrad on this one; FFIV is definitely in my top 5 faves of all time. (VII’s on there, too) :P

  11. Steve says:

All this talk of FFVI makes me sad that it’s so hard to get hold of the GBA version nowadays :(

*EDIT* Maybe I’ll get lucky and it’ll see a release on the Wii Virtual Console?

  12. Lain says:

    … a bunch of links.

    Dear folks,
    dear Shamus,

for a time you erased two Emails, where I stated some politic opinions. Though I can understand it, I want to give you and all your fans of Shamus an link for an hopefully enjoyable german point of view.

I would feel honored, when somebody look at it, and give me a small feedback.

Even Prouder I would be, when it would be worth an official artikel, but I doubt, that Shamus will do it, even when this artikel survies the censoring.

    Have fun:

  13. Lee from Sheboygan says:

Final Fantasy III for the DS isn’t worth the trouble. It’s not the same as Final Fantasy III for the SNES, which was actually VI.

    (head explodes)

But I like the “My Parents Are Dead!” thing.

Also, I love that my Wavatar has a monocle. I didn’t know I was evil. Good to know. :)

  14. Mistwraithe says:

Lain, I don’t know that I like your chances of saving your post from deletion by Shamus but until then I have to say that Volker Pispers is a funny guy… even though in the entire history of the internet the number of people who have been swayed from their core beliefs by something they read or saw online can be counted on your fingers…

  15. Miral says:

Oh, I don’t know about that. I can think of quite a lot of people who have been swayed by something they’ve read online. Now, toppled on the other hand…..

  16. Shamus says:

Lain: Is there some sort of shortage of political sites on the internet? Could you find no place more appropriate to fence with people over this stuff?

If I was going to talk politics here, I’d use the site as a bully pulpit to talk about MY politics. If I wanted to piss away my readership with radical positions, I’d at least make sure they were MY radical positions.

I’ll leave the comment up, for the curious, but I keep this place politics-free for a reason.

We’re here for fun and to discuss our various common hobbies, not to search out and highlight our many differences. Plenty of other places for that.

  17. Politics!

Egads. It’s impossible to get away from that stuff on the internet.

  18. Lain says:

    dear folks,
    dear Shamus,

at first thank you for not erasing the link.

Second I mentioned my opinions in context of your artikels, Shamus. Also I want to mention, that you state your interest here:
    “6. I'm a political radical”
    http://www.shamusyoung.com/twentysidedtale/?page_id=148.
So I had the wrong impression, that you could like a sidenote here and there.

Volker Pispers is a very educated, well honored political comedian in Germany. He develoded in all his 20 years doing his job a highly recommended credibility here in Germany.

Last and surely not at least, I don’t think, that my opinions are “radical” in any way. Cynical, yes.
I don’t want to mention my opinion here any further, as is of wish of the “Sidekeeper”. In short I have only a lot of problems with war and an institution like Guantanamo.

Germany been there, done that. Before 60 years. Nobody needs that, especially now.

Thanks again for the tolerance. I would like to discuss this on a normal Email base. [email protected]

Here on this side, I will now only answer RPG-related things, though it could be difficult, because I played a long time Cyberpunk 2020.

  21. Kris says:

Alas, alack. You blaspheme the church of nerd! FF VI was definitely the best of the series (In my opinion, it will be argued about, but I’ll stand by it any day.)

I’ve got three copies, if you want me to lend you one. Playstation, Nintendo DS, and the original SNES catridge. Yeah… I like it that much.

  22. Lee from Sheboygan says:

You know, I have to agree with you, Kris. The story and gameplay is bar none, the best in the FF series. I absolutely love FF7 to death, don’t get me wrong. But 6 edges it just by | | this much.

Thanks for joining the discussion. Be nice, don't post angry, and enjoy yourself. This is supposed to be fun. Your email address will not be published. Required fields are marked*

Can you imagine having Darth Vader as your father?

You can make things bold like this:
I'm very glad Darth Vader isn't my father.

You can make links like this:
I'm reading about Darth Vader on Wikipedia!

You can quote someone like this:
Darth Vader said
Luke, I am your father.
