Silent Hill 2 Plot Analysis
A long-form analysis on one of the greatest horror games ever made.
Spider-Man
A game I love. It has a solid main story and a couple of really obnoxious, cringy, incoherent side-plots in it. What happened here?
Batman v. Superman Wasn't All Bad
It's not a good movie, but it was made with good intentions and if you look closely you can find a few interesting ideas.
The Loot Lottery
What makes the gameplay of Borderlands so addictive for some, and what does that have to do with slot machines?
Do It Again, Stupid
One of the highest-rated games of all time has some of the least interesting gameplay.
Let me be the FIRST to say “Congratulations on the anniversary and Congratulations on the wife.”
Congratulations, Shamus! Here’s to 11 more years (and more)!
I know I’m sounding like a parrot, but: Congratulations!
That’s spectacular!!! WTG Shamus, congratulations to you and your wife!
BTW: those gifts are spectacular! What book was it? :)
I didn’t want to mention the title of the book, since it would result in an awful threadjack. The title is pretty inflamitory. Note to my liberal friends: No, I don’t think you’re Nazis. How about you stop calling me one and we can be bestest buddies? High five.
Congratulations! If your wife has made you half as happy as my wife has made me, then you are one lucky man indeed.
I promise I won’t call you a Nazi, maybe misguided, but never a Nazi.
Dear Nazi: Happy Anniversary.
;)
Happy anniversary, Shamus! You were caught by a good wife obviously. Not many women would buy right-wing literature and dice for a man. Mostly we keep those goodies for ourselves ;-)
Oh my gosh, whatever side of the fence you’re on you’ve got to admit the picture on the front of that book is hilarious!
Congratulations to you and yours Shamus. Making it 11 years isn’t easy these days. You two must be very dedicated to each other. Good for you.
Happy Anniversay!
Happy Anniversary Shamus.
What’s 11 years already? Copy paste
11th Wedding Anniversary
Traditional Gifts: Steel
Modern Gifts: Fashion Jewelry
So you get her a cool modern Jade and Steel necklace and she gives you a Brushed steel d20 (I love mine!)
P.S. lol @ Mari’s comment…
Congrats! After 16 years myself, I can say it only gets better!
Your first instinct was right Shamus…discussion of such books is never amicable. I’m glad you make it a point not to discuss politics on this blog.
It never ceases to amaze me how much people of opposite political inclinations have in common, and how much they can enjoy one another’s company when the topic of politics is never brought up.
And BTW, since you sit on the other side of the fence politically, you might find the comic that I am going to post on Monday funny.
Congratulations, Shamus! May the next 11 be even better.
Congratz, me and mine are going on 9 this year.
I have the most respect for those who stay with the ones they married through thick and thin.
Hey Shamus! Congratulations!
Strangeite: I don’t know if I’d say “other side”, which makes it sound like I’m in with the Republicans, which I’m not.
Phlux: You’re very right. Part of the reason is because the political field is filled with such rancor. You can enjoy someone until you find out they’re a member of the group that spends all day insulting you and demeaning your personal beliefs. It’s pretty hard to not have that color your perception of them afterwards, even if they never join in with the insults themselves.
And as I predicted: Total threadjack. :)
Ah well, I brought it on myself.
Excellent news! Can we see the dice? They sure sound sexy.
Ben
Congratulations!
Sorry for ruining the natural twenty…
This has got to be the weirdest Godwin’s law situation of all times.
Anyway, congrats Shamus, but you still lose ;)
(edit, I really like my gravatar)
Happy Anniversary! Wow, eleven years! That is awesome, my wife and I are just barely coming up on four years. Good work keeping together that long in a world that does not understand or value marriage as it should!
Congrats on 11 years! That seems like such a long time for someone who has not even been married a year. I can’t even imagine what my life is going to be like in 10 more years.
Glà¼cklicher Jahrestag
A Very Happy Anniversary to you both!
That picture looks very much like my wife and I on our wedding day five years ago. :)
Blessings to your family, and I pray you continue to have a wonderful life together!
What’s she trying to do? Make you happy or something?
It’s obviously no less than the plot of an evil genius!
Strangeite: I don't know if I'd say “other side”, which makes it sound like I'm in with the Republicans, which I'm not.
I think you’ll find that many if not MOST of the people who would enjoy that book are not Republicans (or at the very least, not anymore).
Edit: Um, wow, that was rude of me. CONGRATULATIONS SHAMUS!
Congrats man. 11 is a good number.
And the gifts… perfect.
Smoking hot and wise to the ways of giving man gifts, you you a good one man keep her!
There’s a really interesting discussion of the origin of That Book’s title and the 1936 SF movie Things to Come over here.
Congradulations on the 11 years.
I am not the least bit interested in the book. Not that I don’t like books, but I want to know what these new dice look like. :-)
Congratulations Shamus. I wish you many more happy years! And I second the request to see what the dice look like!
Just be careful with those fancy dice Shamus. I’m assuming they’re metal? I’ve seen guys nick wooden tables with big, heavy dice before. Those things are vicious!
I really got a good giggle from Chris @ 25.
Oh, and by the way, congrats, Shamus. Me and the wifey have been married for just 2 years and some change (even though we’ve been together for about 6 or 7), and even that is not half as long as you. I wish you and your family a long, prosperous, and enjoyable life.
I know I’m looking forward to mine!
Maybe it’s just me but I read that as
“Eleven years ago today she got me a book and a sexy new set of dice” I was very confused for a second and than I finished the sentence.
Much congrats to the two of you.
Gratz on 11 years Shamus. and is it just me or are you looking thinner and more fit now than you did back then? Wow, she must have been good for you.
Oh, and I am adding my voice to the swelling throng wanting to see the dice.
I concur with my colleagues above. Saying you got sexy new dice without a pic is mean.
Oh, and Happy Anniversary.
(ooo…new feature. I can edit my comments. Nice)
Congratulations, Shamus!
The author of your book, Jonah Goldberg, was recently interviewed by John Stewart on The(A) Daily Show.
The author seems a bit “extreme” to me, but who knows…
Grats, man. Regards to the wife.
Congrats! Isn’t it great to have a wife who understands?
Happy anniversary! :D
My wife just got me RockBand for ours, I love her to death.
See, this is why we don’t talk politics.
“The author of your book, Jonah Goldberg, was recently interviewed by John Stewart on The(A) Daily Show.

I might say the same of Jon Stewart, but it’s all just words. ;)
Hey, congrats and Happy Anniversary! :D
Angie
The book isn’t nearly what you would expect from the title. It’s not about “democrats are crypto-Nazis” or any such nonsense. It points out that progressives once embraced fascism (Italian, not German flavored) and it wasn’t until Hitler came along that they abandoned the term. Progressive H. G. Wells is actually the one who came up with the term “liberal fascism”, and at the time he was saying it like it was a good thing.
The point of the book (so far) is more or less, “You should know what you’re talking about before you go around calling people facsist”. Sadly, the people who most need to learn that lession (leftist FARK-level trolls) will never read the book. Like a lot of political books, it’s a little historical context seasoned with some heavy-duty preaching to the choir.
Congrats on the anniversary! My wife and I are closing in on 2.
/ignoring the temptation to join the threadjack.
//I have friends both right and left of me. It is possible to talk politely, without trying to “win.”
Are we to assume that you got her something similar? Because that would be sweet if you could get each other sets of dice.
Anyway, Congrats! to Shamus and his wife (who’s name is Heather, I think)
If you didn’t want a thread Jack you should have put something more in the message to distract people, very hard to say something when the only things you can talk about are a book that can give rise to such arguments and:
Happy Anniversary.
ooh, I’ve noticed something a little weird, in the xhtml tags you let people use you have a few pairs that are the same, except some more standards compliant than others:
em is the same as i
strong is the same as b
why?
11!! well done.. I’m in year 7… I think we can make 11.. but it doesn’t always feel like it!
My wife allowed us to spring for a big monitor for me to game on this christmas.. nice to have a wife that knows you!
Enjoy!
akk.. where’s my old Shamusatar?! my new ‘puter didn’t have anything to autofill.. so I have to guess at what e-mail I used… akk.
Perhaps my Shamusatar is gone because I’ve added a website.. alas.. it was a fine Shaumusatar.. it will be missed.
scragar: The list of allowed tags is chosen by wordpress. I dunno why the list is the way it is.
Congratulations on going to 11! I can tell you from the far side of 18 that it just keeps getting better.
But I like nazis! :P
Anyway congratulations! I would say you are very lucky, maybe you are in a way, but I think you mostly worked for what you have. Good going!
Congratulations! I’d like to see the dice, too.
First: Congrats! Coming from a split family (in many, many ways…) I envy those who have solid families, and you seem like one. Here’s to many more years!
Second: Though I’m what Bill O’Reilly described as a “liberal-hippy-pot-smoking-communist bastard”, that doesn’t stop me from enjoying the company & reading the works of anyone else – liberal, conservative, what have you. It’s silly to be prejudiced over something so base… It’s like a higher form of racism.
At any rate, I’m still loving your blog (it’s the only one I read at all, actually) so that should be endorsement enough, or something. How are the dice?
Why do geeks always get hot wives?
Congrats man. 11 years is a good start, and I hope you two can go the distance, though it sounds like you will have no problem. For inspiration, my great uncle Bill and his wife are celebrating their 60th anniversary on Friday, Feb. 1st.
(*Puts gun to Shamus’ head*)
I DEMAND THAT YOU FLY THIS THREAD TO CUBA. INFORM ALL PARTICIPANTS TO PUT THEIR HANDS ON THE POST IN FRONT OF THEM AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS.
Now that’s a threadjacking! Happy Anniversary. You look like you’re not old enough to get married in the pic. ;^)
Happy Anniversary to you both!
OH boy, I didn’t mean to start that! Sorry Shamus!!!!! Being a librarian I like to know what people read. Silly Librarian types!
Happy Anniversary! I went to a nice Italian restaurant to celebrate (also, it was my parents’ 33rd anniversary).
