Some days, I’m worried that I sound like these guys:

What idiots.

I mean, they invited that girl to watch Superman without first determining if she was a Marvel or DC fan? Simpletons!

That show is hilarious and frightening at the same time. It’s all of our worst stereotypes rolled into one package.

It won’t have a second season, but it’s nice to see that people are taking the dork audience (somewhat) seriously.

  2. Adam says:

    Oh dear God!!
I think I met these two at a Sci-Fi/Gaming convention, multiplied by 100 though.

  3. Jeremiah says:

Yea, normally I’m not a big fan of sitcoms, but I really do enjoy watching this one if nothing else for my inner commentary going, “yea, i know people like this.. oh wait, I am people like this.”

Also, at the end of every episode there are these things that Chuck Lorre writes, and they’re different every time. Very entertaining to read.

  4. ZzzzSleep says:

This reminds me of the Larry Niven story “Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex”. Found at http://www.larryniven.org/stories/Man_of_Steel_Woman_of_Kleenex.shtml

  5. I wonder if the reference to “2600 comic books” was intentional…

  6. Romana says:

What was this show called? The video in question is “no longer available”.

  7. Henebry says:

The Niven story is certainly the source for this. I’ve also got an 80’s-era underground comic that makes much the same point (one that, in fact, just skirts the DC copyright).

What I can’t stand is the sitcom staginess of this production. Not just the laugh-track but the contrived way that the second geek steps around the first one to speak his lines.

The Office was supposed to change everything, dammit!

  8. Zonga says:

Wow. It’s every guy I’ve ever dated. That scares me, and I’m not quite sure how.

  9. Rebecca says:

Spluh. It’s perfectly obvious that Lois Lane was not falling at 9 meters per second per second, so why bother to debate the rest of the scene?

I’m just concerned that they invited her over to watch Superman 3 and 4. I thought they liked her.

  10. Taelus says:

Ok, I officially have to go set my Tivo now. That is amazing. Also, I find it deeply concerning that I’ve more or less had that discussion about the catching of Lois, among other physics issues…

While I don’t dress like them, I might have some of them for nerdiness (ok, so it’s not a real word, but it works) :-)

  11. nilus says:

A word of warning. This clip is funny, but you get one funny clip per show max. Its not a good show. Your Tivo is better off recording better new shows(Aliens in America, Reapers) or old favorites(Dexter, Heroes, House).

Plenty of nerd TV on that better then this crap.

  12. Telas says:

I hate “reality” TV with a passion, but my wife got me completely hooked on “Beauty and the Geek” last season, and (despite being the brainchild of Ashton Kutcher) it’s a great show. The finale last season was something I’ve never seen in a “reality” show, and the transformations that the contestants go through are simply amazing. Watch it.

  13. bargamer says:

Where is it conclusively stated/implied that she reached terminal velocity? And Superman’s flight is not a feat of strength, unless he can somehow “lift his own weight” every second with nothing to brace against. No, I’d much rather believe it to be telekinesis or magnetic manipulation.

  14. SimeSublime says:

The show isn’t bad, but I’d suggest “The IT Crowd” instead. It’s a British show about IT nerds, and is in my opinion far superior. Apparently they’re making an American version of it, but considering what you countryman did to Red Dwarf and The Office, I’m not holding my breath for it.

  15. Miako says:

    red dwarf rocks.
but so does Upright Citizens Brigade.
    ;-)

  16. Poet says:

It’s like CBS somehow recorded my most private conversations with friends. I should call them, and ask when to expect a check for this.

  17. Taellosse says:

Sadness reigns. The clip has been pulled from YouTube, and I cannot see it.

  18. Taellosse says:

Okay, I take it back. That was odd. I had loaded this page an hour ago from my RSS reader, and just now got to it. When I clicked the play button, it said the clip wasn’t available anymore. But when I posted the comment and, on a whim, tried again on the reloaded page, it worked fine.

  19. Tonko says:

Ugh, that show offends me as a geek and as a woman. I saw a few minutes (not those ones, those are actaully pretty funny), but some bits from the pilot I think. I forget the details, but I seem to remember one of them showing her his Warcraft game. I repressed the rest because I was pretty disgusted. My SO is a geek, as are most of our friends, and if this was supposed to appeal to us, I rather doubt it. It’s making fun of us, and not in a way that we could laugh too.

(I prefer Chuck, for funny geeky guys. And also, Red Dwarf does indeed rock.)

  20. Rask says:

9.80665 meters per second per second. It’s one of those numbers that stuck with me from high school.

Oh, and if you enjoyed that discussion, you’ll enjoy watching the physics of superheroes.

  21. Ryan says:

Reminds me of Lilek’s commentary on a particular cringeworthy Superman comic cover. :)

  22. Browncoat says:

Yeah, I don’t think this show will last too long either, but it does make me laugh pretty hard once or twice an episode.

  23. Mark says:

This reminded me of Neal Stephenson’s astute observation:

“On of the most frightening things about your true nerd, for many people, is not that he’s socially inept – because everybody’s been there – but rather his complete lack of embarrassment about it.”

    Hehe.

  24. Marty says:

I agree with one of the previous posters:

The show has a funny gag about once per episode… but that’s about par for most sit-coms these days. I’m still not sure why I sometimes watch “How I Met Your Mother”. That show struggles for even 1 good gag per show. I guess I just can’t stay away from Allyson Hannigan.

  25. elda says:

i had that exact conversation with my mom. well not exactly. we left out the kryptonian skin cells.

    i love that show.

  26. Jack says:

Funny reading the comments saying “it’ll only last 1 Season” etc. when they’re about to start S5 now.
