The Next Webcomic, Followup

People are still suggesting movies and TV shows for me to tackle once DMotR has concluded. There is nothing wrong with saying “such-and-such would be hilarious”, but I want to point out that such suggestions are futile: The next comic is already underway. That ship has sailed, we’re going full steam, and we’re not stopping until we hit an iceberg. (Or I get bored.)

I just hate to see people flailing away, trying to influence the direction of the next comic when it’s too late to do anything about it. So, speculate your heart out, but please don’t be disappointed when I don’t follow your suggestion.

I wouldn’t have any appointments.”

    Hehe, 1st post! I think!

I’ve been reading DMoTR for about a year now, and I think its awesome….so awesome, in fact, that i’m guessing it won’t realli matter which particular TV show or movie you choose to base it on, because seeing how you’ve done on this webcomic, it will turn out great! :D

  2. Martin says:

    Blade Runner! Blade Runner!

Oh hell, maybe I’ll have to do it myself

  3. Henebry says:

I was only teasing when I suggested the Bourne trilogy yesterday. The Intarweb is not a medium well-suited to irony.

  4. Andrew Cory says:

As long as you point out the URL and RSS feed for the new strip…

  5. SteveDJ says:

Hmmm, I just can’t see how the movie “Titanic” is going to make for a D&D-based web comic — but I trust you in whatever decision you make… :) Whatever you have chosen, I’m sure it will be funny!

  6. Fickle says:

Damnit. Now I have to flail about guessing what the source will be for the next one.

    And start taking bets!

SO! A cookie on it being the Matrix. Any takers? You can match my bet, or raise. All currencies accepted.

  7. Phantomwhale says:

Bet it’s Dave’s Star wars campaign… Unless Merry/Pippin’s old player still has a copy of Mechwarrior in his car…

  8. Ryan says:

My guess goes to Firefly/Serendipity. It seems to beg for a d20 treatment, and I’ve never even seen the program! :)

  9. Considering Shamus has already mentioned his concerns about the possibilities presented should any who claim ownership find his comic… I have not since held any beliefs that his next comic would be screenshots of any recent movie or show. Should it happen anyway, I’m sure I’ll be pleasantly surprized. In any case, I am curious what will come, and am looking forward to it. DMotR has been a fun ride, and I dread the day it must come to an end.

  10. Mik says:

The Turkish Star Wars knock-off, right? Right? :) Show what a *really* bad DM can do with a misunderstanding of a basic plot.

  11. Doug Brown says:

I had always figured Barney Miller was next in the queue, but I could be wrong. Sanford and Son? Are You Being Served?

Actually, you could cut out the middleman and do a Monty Python and the Holy Grail webcomic.

  12. Iain Coleman says:

I thought a version of Firefly in which all the characters act like Traveller players would be good, until I realised it’s been done, and it was called Firefly.

  13. Skeeve the Impossible says:

I have a pretty good hunch as to what it will be. I am his brother and I know how he thinks. But I won’t say anything for fear of being right, and spoiling the surprise.

If I did ruin it I suppose I would be “a wicked little critter”

  14. Poet says:

“That ship has sailed, we're going full steam, and we're not stopping until we hit an iceberg.”

So it’s going to be Titanic?

  15. asterismW says:

Fickle, I see your cookie and raise you a banana. I think it’ll be the Serenity storyline, with “quests” from Firefly; mostly because Shamus is such a fan, but also because it’d be truely ruling to see it as a D&D campaign!

  16. Dev Null says:

You’re all wrong. He’s not going to do a screencap parody where he pretends a movie is a roleplaying game, he’s going to do a screencap parody of the Dungeons & Dragons movie and pretend its got acting, or a script…

(Oh wait. Guess they did that in the original.)

  17. Dave says:

I understand that you have started the DM of the Teletubbies comic.. I didn’t know you were telling everone so.. I hope you’ve tackled that issue you had with Poe’s sexuality… I’m sure you’ve handled it with taste and dignity.

  18. Dave says:

wicked little critter, eh.. you tell too much, friend brother.

  19. Browncoat says:

@Ryan — The Firefly movie was called “Serenity,” not “Serendipity,” which, IIRC, was a chick-flick with John Cusack and Kate Beckensale. Not great role-playing fodder.

@Dave — It was Tinky Winky who had loafers of questionable lightness. Po is happily married to Zoe from Sesame Street. They’re currently expecting their second muppet.

@Shamus — Are you saying that there’s no possibility of talking you out of your current project to begin what we want to see?!?! Geez, what do we pay you for, anyway? We want to see a comic based on Whose Line is it Anyway? and we want it as soon as DMotR ends, and don’t show me any screen caps of Drew Carey (unless it’s farce like you wanted to use the cap of Leggylass from that pirate thing he did). We want the original British version with Clive Anderson and that stuck up John somebody.

  20. -Chipper says:

I’m thinking it will be a Bunnies & Burrows RPG campaign of Jurrasic Park. I’m almost positive. Sorry to spoil it. ;-)

  21. Tess says:

For my part, I don’t care what story you do! I’m just THRILLED you’re going to do another project after DMotR and I’m sure it will be BRILLIANT!!

  22. NeedsToHeal says:

Glad you will continue to provide the humor so that I may stay sane for another day. Looking forward to your next project.

  23. Rebecca says:

    So it’s based on Titanic?

  24. roxysteve says:

[Shamus] I would like to congratulate you on the fact that for the vast majority of the time you’ve been putting out DMotR you’ve actually achieved the three comics a week schedule you set yourself. Finding the time alone would daunt me, but then to put up with all the “not funny this week” crapola or the “let’s (you) do something else next” horseshirt and still get it to press on time is outstanding.

The only other D&D webcomic I read promises a three a week schedule but rarely hits the mark these days.

Just thought I’d say, is all.

    Steve

  25. theonlymegumegu says:

Whatever it is, I’ll be happy to see it once it starts ^_^ not that I want DMotR to be over any faster, either… ^_~

  26. General Ghoul says:

Surely its an anime movie, lots of fodder there.

  27. luagha says:

I’d like to see a ‘where are they now’ strip. As in –

The next campaign Leggylass’s player played in was obviously this totally goofy magical pirate campaign.

The next campaign Aragormless’s player was in was supposed to be a Western, and he brought his Western character sheet, but it turned out to be a pulp-action horseback Sahara race.

  28. lplimac says:

Well lets see… it needs to be a movie series with at least 3 instalments to give it length and something relatively popular. Shrek right?

  29. ohnoabear says:

    roxysteve,
so you read Order of the Stick, too?

    Shamus,
props for quoting ‘Snowball in Hell.’ It’s a great song.

  30. Corsair says:

He never stated that it would be a screencap comic. It could be a drawn webcomic or something else. Although I’d prefer another screencap webcomic.

  31. CJG says:

I’m all for the titanic D&D webcomic. I bet you can get some nice jokes out of the whole necklace thing. And the ship ought to have plenty of NPCs on it for comedy gold.

  32. M says:

What I want to know is…will next comic have the same ‘players’ in it?

  33. jpetoh says:

I’m still pulling for the X-Men trilogy with the characters playing Mutants and Masterminds. You get the characters arguing about the rules and the source material. They have to upgrade from 1e to 2e between the first and second films. You get to have a couple of girls/women playing. The players making fun of the GM for his bad Patrick Stewart impression. And you have that just deplorable third film that I think was written by a guy who gave his seven-year-old nephews an niece some action figures then wrote down everything they said. I think it would be a blast.

But Fickle’s suggestion of the Matrix is intriguing…

  34. dtb says:

I have a feeling that though DMotR is so great, that we won’t be seeing a repeat. You could take any movie and make it funny in a similar manner. As funny as DMotR, I just can’t fathom yet (trying to dig out of a pit of blasphemy). I’m sure it will be funny, though. Can’t wait.

Howabout something with a more modern feel. Like Miami Heat, the TV show.

  35. robert says:

My guess, based on your previous posts, is that you’re doing a star trek send up.

  36. xbolt says:

The next comic is already under construction? Hmm…

I wonder if it will follow Dave’s Star Wars campaign…

  37. If we are running a book, I’ll place my money on

the Buffy/angel series… There’s a lot of mateiral there…characters are generally the same from start to finish (some look a little older)

  38. Shawn says:

    I know what it iiiis
    I know what it iiiiis!

  39. phlux says:

Personally, shamus, I hope you choose not to do a comic based on screencaps from film or TV. Obviously you’re great at it, but you deserve to earn off of your work, and I hope that you have partnered with an artist, or found some open-source medium for artwork that will allow you to profit from your hard work.

  40. Eric the vengeful says:

What’s with the Teenage Mutant Big Giants’s quotes.

  41. Dan says:

What’s that you say, Shamus, you are taking suggestions for your next webcomic? GREAT! Here’s my list, in order of preference. I’m certain you’ll pick one of these:

    Star Wars
    Star Trek
    Star Search
    Re-scanned Richie Rich Comics
An original comic based on production stills of wildlife documentaries.
Ben-Hur the movie as a FATAL RPG campaign.
The plot of 300, but with your own photographs of lunch meats as characters and sets. Uhm, and more funny.
Wizard of Oz as a First Person Shooter.

  42. Maddyanne says:

I hope you’ve found an artist to partner with or are doing original visuals of your own too. You’re so good at this.

  43. Amanda says:

I just hope it is something I am familiar with with so I can appreciate all the ins and outs.

  44. YaVerOt says:

Hit an iceburg got me thinking Titanic also, then I realized that the movie’s too short. Thinking what else you could mean…

I look forward to enjoying your upcoming DM of the Love Boat.

  45. Dan says:

Uh, Titanic’s too short? In what accelerated multiverse?

  46. SteveDJ says:

Well, let’s see here… LotR, extended editions, have a combined running time of 11+ hours. Titanic is only about 3 hours. So yes, by comparison, Titanic is too short. :)

  47. Osvaldo Mandias says:

The next campaign Leggylass's player played in was obviously this totally goofy magical pirate campaign.

The next campaign Aragormless's player was in was supposed to be a Western, and he brought his Western character sheet, but it turned out to be a pulp-action horseback Sahara race.

That would be great. I’d love to see a where-are-they-now post in the future, if Shamus’s next project (which is sure to be awesome!) doesn’t include the same roleplayers.

Wow, that Sahara horse race movie really sucked.

  48. Dave says:

Well.. I suppose you haven’t all heard.. The players are making the Teletubbies their PCs.. and they are either entering the world of Pokemon.. or Gremlins.. poor Dipsy!

  49. Frank says:

I’m so happy there _will_ be a follow-up to DMOTR (every episode of which continues to be a high point of my day) that I don’t really care what it’s going to be. I’m sure it will be hilarious. I also wish that I could properly express exactly how much I appreciate your efforts, Shamus. Heck, I’d pay good money to read this stuff! (Oops… you didn’t hear me say that! )

  50. Alan says:

If you do have a whole domain to your next comic, may I suggest that you add a forum to the site?

An free and customisable one can be found at http://www.phpbb.com, and I think would be quite popular with the comic, as then there can be some longer ranging discussions of stuff.

    Cheers.
