Idiot of the Week

Remember my Rollercoaster video from last year? This week I got a message from another YouTube user: [Link redacted: Please see the followup.]

Hey, im the original maker of the Bowling Plus Rollercoaster = fun!, I posted that video on www.thatvideosite.com on October 10, 2006 and then last posted it on youtube. Please remove the video now or state that i am the maker. Thank You

Astounding.

This is like walking up to a random stranger on the street and saying, “Excuse me sir, but you seem to be eating my ice cream cone.” You are lying to the one person in the world who is least likely to believe your lie. I didn’t bother asking him why, if he made the movie, he put my real name in the credits. He doesn’t seem to be a forward-thinker.

I can understand that there are idiots and freaks all over the internet, and I’m aware that YouTube tends to draw the wost ones, but it still amazes me when I run into these people and I get to see them do their thing. I’m captivated by this sort of behavior: What are these people like in real life? Could they possibly be this dumb and this dishonest and still survive?

Amazing.

    Priceless.

Please tell me what your reply to him was!!!!

  2. NeedsToHeal says:

There are many dishonest people in life, and yes, they survive. Trust me, you don’t want to know what they’re truly like in real life.

  3. Phlux says:

Is he maybe claiming that he did a video SIMILAR to that one? Perhaps he did his own sadistic roller coaster death video and believes you have somehow infringed upon his non-existant copyright by making a completely unrelated yet similar video.

Though, my money is still on him just being a crazy internet freak. Love that video.

  4. Cenobite says:

Just write back: “u buy gold?”

    That should shut him up.

  5. BobbyBob says:

Wow, this guy is a moron. The video is exactly the same. Not only does it have Shamus’s real name at the end, the impostor posted it five days after Shamus.

Also, that video is pure gold. Just thought I should mention it.

  6. Browncoat says:

How dare he! How can he claim credit for that video when all along, I’ve been telling everyone that I created it under the pseudonym “Shamus Young”. The nerve.

  7. Carl the Bold says:

    Mmmm…ice cream.

Better start printing out and notarizing DMotR, or this guy might start to claim credit for that!

  8. BobbyBob says:

Just thought that I should add the link to it on thatvideosite.com where he claims to have uploaded it on the 10th of October, even though it clearly says the 20th there.

    http://www.thatvideosite.com/video/3465

  9. wildweasel says:

I too am interested in seeing what your reply to this guy was – or hell, link me to “his” video so I (and others) can use the Report as Inappropriate button =P

  10. Marmot says:

Indeed things like that have a great potential to freak you out; just don’t worry about that. Though of course, even if you’re not a person to crush anyone (I hope), if he really does that you have some thousand times more internet “muscle” than him :p

  11. Siliconscout says:

    Too damn funny.

heck that email is just about as good as the video itself.

Any chance we might be able to have an email address for this “genius” I would love to send him some wisdom from my throwaway hotmail address. Afterall I am sure he’s got stuff I made on his site somewhere ;-)

  12. Bard says:

Wow, and I thought this guy had the Youtube User Who Has Never Seen a Human Being contest in the bag.

  13. One time a post I made showed up a few months later on some other site, sort of a group blog, but with an editor. One of my readers who saw it recognized it.

He wrote to the editor about it and told him that I was the original author, not the guy who claimed to have written it. He pointed out that it had appeared on my site several months previous.

The editor wrote back and said that they’d actually had the article for a year but were only just then getting around to posting it, and it was actually me that was the plagiarist.

  14. Winged Ignorance says:

The putz didn’t even think of cutting your video short so your credits wouldn’t appear at the end for the version he uploaded. What an amateur.

  15. Rhykker says:

So… where does this guy live?

    _>

    What?

    *cracks knuckles*

I’s just wanna put ‘im outta ‘is misery, is all…

But seriously, would be cool if we could round up a posse and tarnish his net-putation whilst sticking up for Shamus… Maddox’s readers do it…

  16. Telas says:

Further proof of Gabe and Tycho’s GIFT.

    Telas

  17. Mrs T says:

Oh yes, the deathcoaster! Thanks for bringing it to my attention again, random internet fuckwit!

*chortle* I just love seeing the little guys still clutching their balloons in the carnage!

  18. Mordaedil says:

I hate these people, sadly not much to do about them either. But to blog and laugh at them.

  19. Clyde says:

Given the nature of our American political class (both parties) I can assure you that dumb and dishonest people not only survive, but follow the Peter Principle of rising to their level of incompetence.

  20. Alex says:

Until now, I’ve been happy with you getting the publicity while I toil in the canary mines, Shamus, but in light of this, I think it’s time you put the true author of Dungeon Master of the Rings on your site: Alexander Doenau, esq.

I presume that the cheque is in the mail?

  21. Telas says:

Could they possibly be this dumb and this dishonest and still survive?

Given the nerf life we’re leading, where you can get rich through stupidity, this kind of attitude is more than a liability, it’s an asset.

  22. Rebecca says:

Tell him he’s interrogating the video from the wrong perspective.

  23. Another Look says:

Dear forum users, im the original maker of the Internet. Please stop using it or give me moneys. Thank you.

  24. Jim says:

The ice cream analogy is apt, but this is more like someone walking into your kitchen at lunchtime and saying, “Excuse me, you are eating my homemade ham sandwich and I demand that you either give it to me or acknowledge that I made it.”

The cheese obviously fell off this guy’s cracker a long time ago. Definitely a couple bananas short of a bunch.

  25. Anon says:

    Canary mines?

  26. Ian says:

You see, Shamus, people like that know fully well that they can’t act like a jerk in real-life without getting their hindquarters beat mercilessly, so instead they try that crap on the Internet.

Really, I’d say what he’s trying to do by sending you a public message is undermining you. He’s probably thinking that you’d look like the jerk if you deleted his message (and, if you did so, he’d probably flaunt that fact) and relying on people not to scrutinize the dates that “his” videos were posted.

Regardless of what he’s thinking, the idiocy that he displayed is astonishing.

  27. Katy says:

I don’t want to make this a hugely long comment, but I got suckered into *living* with a girl that I had thought was a good friend to me and our group. I and the other roommate moved out while she was at work a few months ago after a very emotionally traumatic period in which she claimed that she had been sexually assaulted on a train and had a court date to prosecute the guy and everything. We found out that the entire thing was fabricated and then began digging more. We found out over the course of just a couple of weeks that practically everything she had ever told us (a good 75%), from big things to little things, were complete lies. She even claimed on her blog that she had actually written the lyrics to a recently released English-version of a Japanese song by an artist she is currently stalking.

In her case, she had narcissistic personality disorder, which often carries the symptom of pathological lying. She was so good at lying that we just never picked up on it. Not to say that this guy on YouTube is a good liar, but as the crazy ex-roommate’s lies became bigger and bigger, she couldn’t control herself and therefore began to do a bad job of lying. My friend and I weren’t feeding her ego the same way that her ex-roommates did (who had their own mental problems), so she began to throw out bigger lies to get the attention she wanted. We pulled stakes before any more damage could be done to our psyche.

I’m just saying all this because *that’s* what people like this YouTube guy are like in real life. Destructive parasites.

  28. Skeeve the Impossible says:

It is to bad he didn’t claim to have invented AIDS. Cuz I would totally give him credit for that.

  29. Daemian_Lucifer says:

    A thought occures:
Maybe he just wanted his 5 minutes of fame, and what better way to do that, than by making shamus publiclly speak about you? There is no bad reputation, after all.

  30. Carl the Bold says:

Dear forum users, im the original maker of the Internet. Please stop using it or give me moneys. Thank you

Check it out, y’all. Algore read DMotR.

  31. Alex says:

Yes, in the canary mines we have to take canned gas for our safety. Canaries have been scientifically proven to contain 75% of the world’s comedy and 96% of its D&D wisdom. This is why plagiarism is so rife: them canaries is dangerous huntin’. When was the last time you saw one above ground?

  32. Patrick the Evil Twin says:

I’m actually wondering why a simple, albeit funny, homemade video on Youtube is even worth expending the 50 calories to write such a letter? Why even bother? Even if the author actually gives in credits you, what do you get? The royalties? Typical royalties for such things range from 5-25% depending on the authors popularity, and last time I checked .5×0=0. Sex? A T-shirt? Coupons good for a free small waffle cone at Dairy Queen?

Being the originator of such a thing carries no value. The ice cream cone analogy fails in that an ice cream cone has SOME, albeit small, value to alot of people. Ice cream tastes good, and you have to pay for it. The video is worth nothing.

The only value such a thing has is to it’s TRUE originator, in that you created somthing that brought a smile and laughter to peoples lives. The idea that i million people logged on looking for somthing funny and found your creation/joke/whatever. It’s only worth is in the satisfaction for having done it. To anyone else EXCEPT

  33. Patrick the Evil Twin says:

    (ERRRGH…STUPID WINDOWS KEY!!)

To any one EXCEPT the author it has no value at all.

But at least he was polite about it.

  34. Sartorius says:

I heard that Shamus’ work was really written by Roger Bacon.

  35. jpetoh says:

    Mmmm… bacon….

  36. Cineris says:

    Hey,

I’m the original author of the comment Idiot plus Internet = fun!, I posted that comment on http://www.thatvideosite.com on October 11, 2006 and then last posted it on YouTube. Please remove the comment now or state that I am the maker. Thank You

  37. Zonga says:

So THAT’S where my ice cream went! BEFORE I GOT IT, TOO.

I think Robert Goulet has been coming in and messing with your stuff.

  38. Ian, so you think YouTube guy knew Shamus knew he was lying and lied anyway? If so, he could have a prosperous future as a White House press secretary.

  39. CJG says:

    Clearly, the best response is:

I wrote the below email. Please do not send it out again without signing my name to it. Thank you.

    And then quote his email.

  40. Rebecca says:

Re 27: Oh, hi, Homasse (right?)

  41. Dave says:

    Shamus, We got your back.

  42. Katy says:

Re 40: No, no… Sabrina. Homasse helped us confront her. Then again, Homasse is also a little batty herself.

  43. Katy says:

Sorry for the double post. Here’s the original “report” on FandomWank. Gacktisgod even got her own article in their wiki site. -_-

    http://www.journalfen.net/community/fandom_wank/1044429.html

[[Here’s to hoping that the comment code doesn’t explode.]]

  44. Rebecca says:

Re 42: I thought you (Katy) were Homasse.

I remember that wank really well, partially because I had a tangle with Homasse in the F_W comments.

  45. Masokinski says:

Seems he is deleting comments from his YouTube by people that are pointing out that he lied and stole the video, or people referring people to Shamus site for proof.
Noticed my comments are gone, as are a few from before me, and those after mine…
Probably spam tagging them for removal.

  46. Ian says:

Robin, I don’t doubt it, really. After all, if a user uploads a video under the name “ShamusYoung” with “Sadism by Shamus Young” in the credits, most likely that’s the original author of the video (and usually, the author of the video knows that they created the said video :P). So, yes, striker1057 should seriously consider politics or, heck, maybe even becoming an attorney.

I can see it now…Striker1057: Ace Attorney! Now available for the Nintendo DS.

  47. Katy says:

Hey, Shamus… the video quality on what you posted versus what he posted is also much better. This guy is just a humongous Tardzilla.

  48. Rhykker says:

“Seems he is deleting comments from his YouTube by people that are pointing out that he lied and stole the video, or people referring people to Shamus site for proof.
Noticed my comments are gone, as are a few from before me, and those after mine…
Probably spam tagging them for removal.”

He banned us from posting comments on his videos.

And my comment was actually diplomatic.

    Now it’s personal.

I’ll be downvoting all his videos at every chance I get, or find other ways to sully his reputation. I’m going to try flagging the video as copyrighted.

  49. Jaquandor says:

I just flagged the video as well, citing “Other Terms of Use violation” as my reason. We’ll see.

He also hasn’t disabled comments on his OTHER videos, I note.

  50. Doppler says:

Just make things clear, I also made that video under one of my own pseudonyms “Shamus Young” I also worte a bunch of plays 4 centuries ago under one of my earlier pseudonyms “William Shakespeare”.

    Doppler

BTW I also invented the letter ‘E’ both upper case and lower case so please don’t use it unless you are willing to give me credit for each and every use. But I invented under th e pseudonym “Eesie Peete”

  51. Thijs says:

hmm reminds me of ‘secret window’. You’re sure this did not happen just in your mind, Shamus?

  52. Fickle says:

*waves at Rebecca* So I’m not the only one who recognized the tale of gacktisgod! And my sympathies, Katy.

Shamus, nice ice-cream analogy. I think it made me laugh more than the temerity of the guy who sent you that e-mail.

  53. Siliconscout says:

    Oh my God.

    This idiot is from Canada?

On behalf of all Canadians I appologise. We do get our fair share of fucktards (http://www.encyclopediadramatica.com/index.php/Fucktard).

  54. Siliconscout says:

    dang. I brutalized apologize.

    Sorry about that.

  55. Siliconscout says:

Hey apparently he’s got a “no rules club” forum site where there “are no rules”

    http://norulesclub.freeforums.org

It’s just getting off the ground but I think I will sign up and see if I can get him tripped up on the no rules part.

Too funny. Gotta wonder about people like this kid though.

  56. Telas says:

Looks like at least two violations of the TOS for his forum host.

  57. Striker1057 says:

Wow, just wow. It’s amazing how the word on the internet can spread around like crazy. Here is my response to the message i sent to him. I posted the video on youtube 3 days before Shamus Did. When i sent the message at the time i did not know he was the original maker until after i sent the message. So what! My Bad! I’m Human everyone makes mistake. That does not give you guys the right to go about spamming my video. (Some i actually made others I took with permission from thatvideosite.com which i do not own i might add) Im the first to admit that fucked up ok? So you can stop being immature about it. But if you wanna fight about this then ill fight back.

P.S Nice try with the forum post and taking my videos and making an account saying there yours when there clearly mine.

  58. Striker1057 says:

    P.P.S

The no rules on my site goes for what your post. The Terms and Services I did not make. The Forum Providers Did.

  59. Alan G says:

    Striker1057:
“When i sent the message at the time i did not know he was the original maker until after i sent the message.”

Yes but you knew you were NOT the original maker, but you still posted comments on the video such as

“I know i know i should have deleted the line. But meh it was just a quick thought i hade.”

“ya i know i got the song from a friend and i dont know where he got it”

These are clearly claims made by you that you had made the video.

  60. Striker1057 says:

Wow you guys are kinda stalkerish now, you have nothing better to do then sit around your computer expliot a little mistake. If you want the video gone send a email to youtube. because im not removing it. I found it fair adn square. Get used to it, thats the way the internet works unfortunlly.

  61. Daemian_Lucifer says:

Interesting words from comming from someone that made this:

    http://youtube.com/watch?v=ob49z9C_Ubk

If that one really was made by you, that is.

  62. Striker1057 says:

Whats wrong with the video besides the grammer mistakes. Its actully got alot of good press before you guys come into the picture.

  63. Shamus says:

    Striker:

There is nothing wrong with the video.

The problem is that you lied about it. Yes, it got a lot of good press. My version has over three quarters of a MILLION views. Who do you have? A few thousand? What are you doing?

I don’t care if you keep it up. What has everyone upset is the absurd lies that keep coming out of you. You’re making yourself look worse.

  64. Striker1057 says:

Ok fair enough ill stop talking if you stop having your people post, steal, and flood my videos then ill stop this is getting out of control. Your actually stealing video now that my friends made.

  65. Suz says:

I’m actually having trouble keeping quiet right now, I’m laughing so hard. The layers of irony are so thick, it’s like a really good Vidalia onion. Striker posts Shamus’ video as his own, then emails Shamus (in outrage) demanding that he remove the original.

Striker now feels oppressed! How could people STEAL VIDEO that someone made??? WHO would stoop so LOW??? (It’s “getting out of control.”)

Do we get free refills of popcorn and soda at this theater?

(fwiw, I’m not going to go sabotage anything – I’d hate for my computer to have to go to such a trashy thieving little site. I’m just enjoying the show here) ;D

  66. Striker1057 says:

Thanks Suz that the most resonable responce so far i guess

  67. Not Bacon says:

I’m going to email William Shakespeare and demand that he acknowledge me as the original writer of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark.

  68. BobbyBob says:

    Striker:

Okay, this is my problem with you. You say you make a mistake, yet you STILL claim that your “friends” made the video. STOP IT. It clearly says Shamus’s name in the credits.

Geez, if you’re going to plagiarize someone you should at least have the common decency to put some effort into it and make new credits. Don’t just throw it up there like a moron.

Not that I know anything about plagiarism or would ever do that sort of thing. *cough cough*

Point is, shut up about your nonexistent friends. Shamus made the video. You stole it and claimed it was yours. Game over. You lose

  69. Striker1057 says:

I don’t know where you getting your fact, i never said that my friend made it. That is a complete lie.

  70. BobbyBob says:

“Your actually stealing video now that my friends made.”

Huh. What’s that? Oh yeah! It’s something you said!

  71. Thijs says:

this sort of people is best ignored

  72. Daemian_Lucifer says:

Shamus, your link for the followup is wrong.

  73. Shamus says:

Daemian_Lucifer: Whoops. You’re too quick for me. I added that link, but told WordPress to publish the followup an hour later. My bad. Should be all fixed now.

  74. Lo'oris says:

    lol what’s going on?

everybody remember: “do not feed the troll”.

just ignore him, they are too many to be babysitted.

  75. DarkLadyWolf says:

I remember seeing this, but didn’t make the connection. Thank you for such wonderfully violent entertainment.

Oh, and the other stuff you do here ;)
