The bad news: You’re confined to a wheelchair.

The good news: Wheeeeeee!

Actually it looks like that would have been scary. Thankfully he got away without a scratch. Seems like the guy was a good sport about it, though.

I’m thinking the rider set the situation up. Otherwise he was just a bit to calm about the whole thing.

  2. Jeremiah says:

I just saw that earlier. It does seem unlikely that the guy in the wheelchair just pulled out in front of the semi and “got stuck.” But strange things happen.

However the situation arose, the thing that surprised me most was that the wheels on the wheelchair held up to those speeds on asphalt.

  3. Shamus says:

Yeah, the stability of the wheelchair wheels amazed me as well. They were going about ten times faster than what anyone might anticipate as the “top speed” of a wheelchair.

Looking at the picture, it does seem like his hands should have been visible to the driver if he’d waved them over his head.

    I dunno. Strange story.

    But funny.

  4. Ian says:

I read about that this morning…holy crap. I’ve gone faster than that on roller coasters, in cars, etc, but I can’t imagine going that fast and not having something holding me in place; that would just be beyond scary. It’s a good thing the truck driver didn’t come to any sudden stops.

Shamus: He did have muscular dystrophy. Perhaps he couldn’t move his arms high enough for the driver to see him (or he might have just not thought of it, given the circumstances).

And while we’re on the topic of interesting news stories, I thought that this one (linked from the wheelchair story when I checked it) was pretty funny: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19099553/

  5. Myxx says:

How could he not be cool? Isn’t he wearing an “I’m a Pepper” t-shirt?

  6. Delta Force Leader says:

I have to admit that sounds pretty scary, going that fast and with no real support and no control.

    Jeremiah,
Actually the wheels didn’t entirely hold up.
“The father said being pushed down the road by the truck burned most of the rubber off the tires of the wheelchair, but otherwise didn’t damage it.

Also the article Ian linked to was very funny.

You have to feel sorry for both the man in the wheelchair and almost feel sorry for the robber.

  7. Matt` says:

I heard about this elsewhere and a seatbelt was mentioned so I don’t think he was totally un-secured.

It also said he was fairly calm – just wondering how long it would be before the truck stopped (You have to wonder, how much time spent at high speed on the front of a truck does it take to go from “oh god I’m going to die” to “this is taking too long”)

  8. Delta Force Leader says:

This man must have REALLY needed his phone. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/19099629/

Personally, at this point I would be buying a new phone.

    ____________

Or perhaps he was cutching onto the arms of the wheelchair for dear life. Not everyone waves their arms above their head on a rollrcoaster ride. !;o)

  10. Renacier says:

Anyone want to take bets on how long before people start trying to replicate this?

  11. Will says:

Well, there are already videos floating around of morons riding in shopping carts pulled or pushed up to 40 or so with a friends car.

  12. Katy says:

Yeah, I saw this article, too! Watched the news clip as well. Poor guy… I bet the truck driver was almost as traumatized as the man in the wheelchair. “W-what? There’s a guy in a wheelchair on my grill?? JESUS!!”

  13. Shandrunn says:

omigod I saw this kid in a wheelchair going over the hill really really fast and he was like WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

  14. jpetoh says:

    Bwah-hah-hah-hah! Wheelchairs and Strife!

  15. Telas says:

Or he could have been thinking, “This may kill me, but it’s the most g.d. fun thing I’ve done since getting into this frakking wheelchair.”

I’m glad someone else found Weeee…. Exactly what I was thinking. “Omigod, my wheelchair got stuck on the front of this semi and weeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.”

The robbery story: I think there’s a lesson here (or at least a stereotype) about robbing an Asian family…
